I personally need to keep my plants in nursery pots. I like clear ones. Then I stick it down in the pot. I takes the guess work out of watering. I take to the sink, water, put back in the pot. I can see how dry my soil is and how the roots look. I can also switch out what plants between pots without disturbing the roots. Pots that have no holes are ‘cover pots’ and intend to have a nursery pot inside. I’m super impressed how well and healthy you keep your plants with so many and so many different needs! I’ve had plants about 4yrs and have about 200 in my collection so I try to keep it stupid simple! 🌱

I love the patina on terracotta. I find ALL mine at thrift stores. I've gone from an overwaterer to an underwaterer tho! My plants are confused😂 I've also spray painted regular ceramic pots in terracotta color for visual appeal and unity. It's so fun, must use clear coat though.

To avoid damaging furniture and sills, I use saucers with all my planters. Under the saucer I attach adhesive felt pads so there's a barrier between the scratchy surface and the furniture (the felt pads are usually used to put under chair legs to protect floors). All my furniture and sills look brand new!

I use to be a terracotta girlie. Love terracotta. But life has changed and now I’m an under waterer so I’m currently changing the pots I used. It makes a difference.

Love patina on terracotta planters. I use plastic pots for my pothos on my front porch. I’m in Tx and it’s been so hot and we aren’t even in August yet. I’m having to water my outdoor plants every couple of days. I have beautiful bougainvilleas in clay pots hence water every other day. Some of these decorative clay pots can be pricey. I don’t have any luck finding pots at thrift stores. I check out garage sales and estate sales…you can find some interesting pots and decorative plant stands there.

Hi Harli! Because of you my house plant collection is thriving. I plant in plastic nursery pots and keep them in cashpos. Bottom water everything with Liquidirt. Since starting these methods, I no longer accidentally kill plants and maintenance is so much easier since bottom watering lasts longer... for weeks in most cases. Appreciate you so much!

Am constantly changing my mind about planters. It’s a delicate balance between substrate and planter material and watering style for me. It all changes for me. I try to just check once a week. It’s unlikely anything will be on its last legs within a week. That said, I no longer grow maidenhair ferns. They don’t forgive! Found some cool shapes in terracotta in the form of ollas at a garden centre. A bit cheaper than buying designed terracotta planters. Nothing quite like the look of a patina-ed terracotta planter though IMO. Something soothing about the look and especially great with architectural looking plants like cacti.

Nice video. I don't like to water so much with so many that I have. So for the most part I seal terracotta with 2 or 3 coats of clear gloss Rust-Oleum unless it's for cactus or succulents. I also drill drainage holes in pottery and ceramic. I use diamond drill bits, on my third one as I have done probably over 50 pots, none broke. Very satisfying.

Oh Harli I do agree with what you said about certain pots for our plants. Sometimes when I leave my plants in the nursery pots they come in the plant does not do so great and when potted up into a pot with a drainage hole that sometimes cause problems also I guess we all just have to figure out what pot works the best for us and our plants. Another downside of non porous pots and their ability to hold moisture longer is the increased prevalence of fungus gnats. You have to make sure to let the top 1-2 inches of the soil dry out.

Question for you & your plant community. My son bought me the Begonia Maculata for Mothers Day. And it’s in a 4 inch ceramic pot. It was in a moisture retaining black soil. The leaves started to curl. I placed on pebble tray. No change. I changed the soil to Potting mix, orchid bark, perlite and worm castings. No change. It sits under a Sansi Light, I have thoroughly drenched but the leaves are curled! HELP 😢 I don’t want it to die.
