Growing up I lived next to a elderly lady that was born around 1895 or so. She said that when her family got to West Texas around 1905 they lived in a lean-to attached to their wagon. Her father and brother would take the wagon every other month or so and ride 2-3 days to get to the lumber yard...took almost 2 years to build a 200 sqft house!
I checked out the cemetery online and it was 100% photographed, all four headstones. Someone took the trouble to go out to the middle of nowhere, and as you showed it is way out on the dirt roads. I would have never thought to explore here - so am getting a kick out of seeing what’s there. Another great video.
I live about 90 miles south of Guthrie. My dad was born in Kent County. When I was in high school driving through Guthrie Roy Rogers was filming a movie. Him and film crew were in ditch filming. Definitely wide open spaces! Plenty of red dirt roads! Enjoyed your video!
Thank you for this. I, too, am always interested in places that have low populations, and the reasons why very few people live in those places. So this interesting history for me. You know, even if that cemetery is out in the middle of nowhere, each person buried in that cemetery represents someone special or important to someone
Goodness! You were really out in the middle of nowhere! What a trooper you are to stay the course and find the destinations you're looking for. I wonder, though, if we need to have you micro-chipped, so if you go missing, we can find you! Thank you for yet another very interesting journey!
I have to laugh. I'll say this.... you have a true ability to know when to stop, know when to move on, you can get us lost but keep us watching. A fact... you are better at using the drone than I would ever be. Enough ftom me. Be good, be safe !@@TravelwithaWiseguy
Enjoyed this video. West Tx is an awesome place. Palo Duro Canyon is awesome. One of my all time favorites is Adobe Walls north of Stinnett. You could do a series on Adobe Walls by itself. Keep up the good work
I love these open spaces like this. I drove from Abilene up through Stamford, to Guthrie, then west to go to caprock canyons state park. Next time you are in Guthrie I recommend going west from there and seeing dickens spring. It's amazing how it's so flat near Guthrie then a little west you start to see canyons. I'd love to watch a video of you exploring all the towns and areas that zig zag the llano estacado. Safe travels man!
Awesome , I am originally from Tom Green County . San Angelo. In Idaho, now. I love to see Texas little towns. Nothing like Texas little towns. Grt job. I can travel to Texas. W/o leaving home. Thnx
You’re down in my family’s area of Texas now! That road (Plainview, Floydada, Paducah, Vernon) is a Lonely old drive! It’s 30 miles to Anywhere out there. 😂🤣😀😉👍
King County and a good amount of your Highway 50 trip sure got you out to where you had elbow room as they use to say. At least fighting traffic was not a concern. Even then, it is still a wonderful look at the vast changes that we have in our country as one travels along. Loved all the drone shots, but that last one panning out down the road that you had come in on to show nothing but miles of country, was a nice shot to show where you were. And makes me glad for today's mechanized transportation that we have. You would of had quite a ride by horseback or carriage to get back to civilization. Plus I understand the a/c wasn't all that good in a buggy! Thanks once more for taking us along!
Some very good observations! As I get older sitting in traffic is high on my lift of least favorite things 😂 I could’ve hung out all day in the open range - it was so desolate and beautiful in my mind!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy While driving for an LTL, I preferred to work country routes if I was on pickup and delivery work. Most of the guys wanted city work. So I was able to stay happy because no one would fight me for the country route. It was what I wanted to do, and was great most of the time. Exceptions being little things such as having only one way to get freight to a farmstead, and finding a three ton bridge on that only road to the destination. Front axle alone was over three ton! Luckily never had one of those old bridges ever go down. Mostly it is just the county's way of avoiding responsibility. But still made me sit lightly in the seat! Yeah, country is best!
I always seek out your videos. I love small towns and ghost towns, and learning the history behind them. Incidentally, I loved the background music in this video! Very "old west".😊❤
First time I saw one of your videos, very nicely done, I enjoyed it and grew up in Texas, born there and lived there for 34 years, (San Angelo area) I went through a place called Stratford Texas on my way to Washington State when I moved here in 1992. It was a very desolate abandoned place with grain elevators being the high light of the town. lol
Wow, that little cemetery is the most interesting thing to me. It's a real wild west location, and it looks like no one is expected to ever go there. Find a Grave has two infants and two adults listed as being buried there. Thank you!
Another great video as always John, but I found it kind of sad that four people were buried so far away from where people live. All the best from Australia.
Really enjoyed the video as I do all of your videos ! Gilkerson Cemetery was real interesting and appreciate the drone view ! The drone views you give us really add to all the videos. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into all your videos and how nice and respectful you are to all the places you visit! I’m sure I will never get to a fraction of where you go but thankful you can take us there ! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year John 🎄🙂
. . interesting note about that Hwy 83, that cuts thru King County from north to south . . . that Hwy 83 runs completely from the US Southern border, all the way to the US Northern border !
Good Morning, The 6666 is world famous ,several cowboy's spent most of their lives working there and they are famous too. I don't think that being connected to the new owner Is a good thing, the store there on the ranch was basically for the ranch people who were working out there. Now it's another tourist attraction. Thanks for Sharing.
You showed a field of irrigated cotton , their is an operating gin in that area , somewhere! John compare 6666 ranch grazing area to the flint hills. Here in kansas we figure 4 acres per cow calf pair , this is would be good flint hills grass.
The actual area of the Flint Hills is so huge, at least from what I’ve seen. Goes all the way down into Oklahoma I believe so it seems much, much larger than the ranch.
Fun to see this video = I am an armature astronomer and used to do business in Amarillo/ There used to be a roadside park where I would stop and take advantage of the dark sky's. (Some of the darkest sky in America - great for comet hunting). This particular night I had the telescope all set up and went back to the car to grab a Dr.Pepper and some oatmeal cookies. On my return I herd some noise, Surprised I turned around to see the biggest and equally surprised skunk I have ever seen in my life, But instead of getting sprayed he or she just looked at me. I guess it was the first time it had ever seen a human. I left my oatmeal raisin cookie as a peace offering. and got back in the car. I didn't want to press my luck, so, After about 20 minutes sitting in the car I got out and packed up my gear and got out of there. And I have never been back.
My dad worked for the 6666's back in early 50's. Until I think about '56. He had come there in 49, I think because my grandfather got sick and dad took his job over. I was born in Paducah in '53. I dont remember a whole lot about Guthrie. My mom waited tables at the old Conoco cafe. I have been back a few times and always enjoy the trip. I am now in Bear Lake, Pennsylvania. Thanks for the video.
My grandfather drilled the wells and set the windmills on the 6666 and the Pitchfork. Waggoner also. He lived on the Pitchfork at the time. I really enjoyed this video. Grandpa's neme was Floyd Smith.

my wife and I took the mule ride down to the leper colony in the early 80s. I can't see crosses on the tombstones so I guess there are baptist graves. My question is: what is the difference among such tombstones and tombstones situated on cemeteries for dogs and cats?
80 people but how many cows. Not a trite question. On land that take 3-4 acres to support one cow you don't need many people but a lot of land.. Downtown Dallas has a lot of people but not many cows.
The 4 6's Ranch and the Pitchfork Ranch, across the highway, both have award winning remudas. They prefer to herd their cattle on horseback, rather than 4 wheelers. They feel it's less stressful to the animals that way@@lindastepp9842
