Finally fixing the Clutch Master and Slave Cylinder | Mazda Miata

  • It's Saturday morning. We're heading out to a Sports car meet to drive "enthusiastically". An hour into the drive, the clutch goes out, completely. We limp it home, with some clutch, sometimes with no clutch at all. Just rev-match the shifts.
    A video we tried to make months ago, because we thought it might be an issue, we are finally forced to do. So here it is. We avoided doing this video because we thought it might be a pain. It was fairly easy and straight forward. If you do brakes next time, just do the Master and Slave cylinder for the clutch as well.

    It's nice to see you working with your daughter Daniel. 👍. Soon she'll be moving out and....
    Treasure these moments. Take care.

    Just watch with my 12 year old daughter. We’re taking this on next week with my ‘91!

      Oh man. That is great. It was an easy project. Just watch how you route the hose. We didn’t pay attention and it was a bit tangled but we got it sorted when we pulled the engine. I do highly recommend changing the hose as well. The pedal feels so much better as the braided hose has no “give” vs the old rubber one. Enjoy the time together :)

    The car sounds nice. I bet it's fun to drive. Your dad is an amazing driver shifting gears with no clutch.

      Isabell here, he surprises me everyday with his knowledge on cars, the car is so fun to drive its like a street legal go kart at times.

      Thank you. Shifting with no clutch is not really that big of a deal. I’m glad you like it tho.

    Yup bad slave cylinder is common on the 1st and 2nd gens. Had to do mine twice in a year because I replaced the original leaky one, got a part, and then that one went bad too. Good thing its a pretty easy job on these.

      First time for us replacing one. I was surprised how easy it was.

    Great job guys!
    Did you have to remove the brake line or would changing the slave & master cylinder alone fix clutch issue?
    Thx, Scott

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is for the clutch. Not the brakes. You don’t have to touch the brake lines to do this.

    • @scottinca1
      @scottinca1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Turbo_Snail Thank you! Im assume they simply decided to upgrade the brake line while they were working in the general area.

      @scottinca1 we did a video on the brakes and the braided brake lines

      @@Turbo_Snail Thanks Turbo! Just to be certain - I can replace Slave & Master cylinder to get clutch engaging and functional again? It's a 1990, 215K miles, rarely driven however love the car and eager to get it back out on the road! I can't thank you enough for your insight and support!

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes you can. It’s easier with a second person but this job is totally doable by one self. Let me know how you did. Make sure you bleed it properly. That clutch will feel nice again.

    What kinda fluid line was that I need it 😩😩

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the description. TPP has all you would ever need for the Miata and other cars.
      You do not need a new line. We ended up replacing the steel line with a braided line. The fluid is just regular DOT3 brake fluid.

  • @RonLarios
    @RonLarios ปีที่แล้ว

    My clutch pedal feels softer than before, is it normal I’m sure I followed the bleeding properly

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe an air bubble? Bleed again! It also could be that your old slave cylinder was sticky.

    • @RonLarios
      @RonLarios ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Turbo_Snail I guess it was a sticky slave cylinder

    Can you tell me you wheels and tire size?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheels on the Miata are some knock offs that came with the car. Wheels size is 16x8, tires are 195/45R16. I do not know what the offset is as it’s not printed on the wheel.
