    Great job please elaborate on how you make your soil/compost mixture
    I’m reading about how compost is going to break down and starve the plant growth a lot lately -your method avoids that problem very well- I like it 🎉😅

    Regarding gophers and planting trees in pots to avoid the gophers from killing them. I’ve had a 5 year old Jan Boyce cut down by gophers. Many other trees as well. For me, gophers are a real problem. They have destroyed an awful lot of stuff that I’ve planted over the past 20 years on my property. I’m not very good with killing animals in the first place, including gophers, and I’m not very good at killing gophers in particular. So I’ve planted a lot of my stuff trying to avoid The gophers from eating them and killing them. I found on trees, wire cages made of hardware cloth are too sturdy and they keep the roots inside the wire basket. after a few years the tree won’t do very well and I found out if I dug up the tree that the roots barely got out of the wire cages. That’s a good lesson to learn when using pots because they have the same issues. I now use 15 gallon pots and I level the pot when I plant them leaving about 3 inches from soil to rim so you can use the pot as an additional watering device. I find this to be one of the most useful parts of using a pot because you can usually add a few gallons of water each time just to the top. It saves on water in the beginning. I also drill lots of 3/4” holes in the pots in the bottoms and the sides only in the areas where they’re gonna be touching dirt where I want the roots to grow. This is especially useful when planting on a slope because part of the pot can be fully intact and the part next to the dirt can be full of holes so you can plant on a steep slope and it still works Even with fruit trees. I have found, that you don’t want to plant them deeply. They don’t seem to do as well. You can also use a smaller flimsier pot like a gallon for small plant or bush. The smaller pots work better in my opinion, but you have to water them every day and it is more difficult to establish them as they dry out easily in the summer. FYI, I began planting in pots when I looked around and realized that many of the trees and bushes that were growing on my farm had began as a small tree in a pot and i had merely watered them and they rooted in place. Be aware many were and are stunted, but others, grew near full size. Be aware when using a pot as a protection device the roots must get past the holes in the pots. The pots plastic cannot be too strong to break And more holes is better than less holes.

    This is an important topic bc protecting roots can double or triple planting efforts. I'm too new at avos to know but my citrus are about the only plants 'my' gophers don't seem to mess with, 2.5 yrs and I haven't seen any gophers around avos. I can't bring self to leave that much plastic in the ground but good info, whatever works, I've always removed from the pot to plant with good success, have noticed they easily suffer from root disturbance.

      @ScaryHairyGary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, I’ve never seen Citrus damaged either. I think there are volatile oils in the plant that keep them away

    Hi Gary,
    Won't it be better to air layer(or to attach a small bag of soil to the branch and allow the roots to form) before you snip off. You would then get another grafted plant to grow.

    Long handle Branch cutter best at cutting that pot up, seen them cut all around the bottom where the drain holes are. Then cut down the sides without disturbing the roots, makes for simple transplant.
    I use chicken wire one layer ( People have found out that lathing wire that they use for stucco is much cheaper than the chicken wire) and one layer of hardware cloth, and 2 layers of weed Barrier cloth. no weeds going through there and definitely no gophers or moles.
    You can use a hardware cloth by itself to pricey but very worth it I just had the chicken wire too because I had it.
    I’ve use this system in my backyard with mulch on top over 3 1/2 years no weeds and I used it in my garden beds to I’m going to plant a Jim Bacon avocado tree in my backyard and I want to use it as well.

    My best advice on growing avocados in clay or "fixing" your clay soil for any trees, I would recommend checking Gary's Best Gardening channel. Do not under any circumstances add organic matter or wood chip to clay soil, add pumice instead and sandy loam if you find it. Or add correct soil mixture without any organic material. I have a gopher problem and that's what led me to this video and I will try burying the pots half deep, thank you for that. As far as adding organic material into clay, it is a very bad advice. The organic material in soil is what rots by itself and everything around it. There is no air circulation around the roots. Avocados need the air (what clay has but less than in sand) they can grow in pure sand with no problem (if needed) if you water it every other day. You are welcome.

    • @ScaryHairyGary
      @ScaryHairyGary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't holy agree with this. All of the organic material will break down in Clayish soils and of course there are all kinds of varying degrees of clay so if it was 100% non-draining clear there might be a point there but that is hardly ever the case. If what you are saying is true, we would have hundreds of people calling us about their dead avocados planted for them, which never happens.
