As far as I know, the Tiptronic won’t allow the engine to over-rev. Quite an important plus, I’d say.
I’ve had mine for 17 years and I still love driving it. A manual would have been a pain in the years when it was my daily commuter.
No big mechanical issues but I changed the IMS , just in case - it was fine, but there we go.
    Values now going up nicely

I have an early Dec'97 C2 tiptronic and love it - unless at the limit on a track I don't wish for a manual... as you say very relaxing and enjoyable to drive but fun when you want it to be. In my opinion, the real world performance gap to a manual is minimal- if you check the gear ratio graphs in the user handbook then you can see that 1st, 2nd and 3rd are near identical up to c.100mph at 7000rpm. The extra ratio in the manual just splits the 4th to 5th shift and will only really give more performance between 110-150mph - I doubt many people use that much performance 99% of the time... top gear 5th in the tip or 6th manual are similar and if anything give more relaxed cruising with the slightly higher ratio for 5th in the tiptronic...
I chose a tiptronic for all these reasons.

@@Amazingfeet Disagree, I drove final 4S version if 996.2 with a Tiptronic and it simply wasn’t as perky in first, then I drove c2 and c4 tip and manual, back to back from city to nearby curvy canyons. The Tiptronics are all the same; better to have 911 or Boxster with a Tip than not have one at all! Now have second Boxster with Tip for wife and it’s a rewarding drive although it won’t rev beyond 6,500 rpm

2008 997.1 4S Tiptronic S with Sports Chrono....and it's fab. Sport mode nicely alters the auto-shifting temperament ...and AUTO mode can be overridden by the steering wheel rocker paddles (+/ -) without engaging Manual mode anyway. Perfect. I have a manual 996 4’S’ and a manual 986 Boxster ‘S’ however our 996 Turbo is a Tiptronic (as my Dad prefers it - always did even when ordering them new) - I think it’s very well suited to the Turbo as it makes it very ‘point and shoot’ which is good fun. I think there are pro and cons to both boxes and everyone will have their preferences. It is also totally the right decision to reinstate the original ‘Carrera 4’ script badge on the back of this car as well!

Another good video. I liked that you brought the lads in for a chat at the end. Your reasons for preferring manual to tiptronic are logical, honest and really quite straightforward. I also agree that the tiptronic is dated on an otherwise classic & timeless vehicle. One of the reasons I was attracted to your channel, is because I prefer the same spec 996 you seem to favour - 6 speed manual, coupe, non sunroof and if I could, the much rarer rear wiper delete.

I had a knee injury a few years ago and I had to sell my manual car back then so i totally get if that’s the reason someone would buy an automatic. With all that said though, my knee if better now and when I get to buy a Porsche it will be a manual, exactly for the reasons you mentioned. It totally takes away from the driving experience, and you don’t feel in control as much. Awesome videos btw! Keep it up.

I consider myself an enthusiast and have always had manuals, including earlier Porsches, until my 997.1. I intentionally got the tip tropic for this one. A couple of reasons. I’m now in an area where I have to routinely valet park - no option with that. Also my wife, who used to drive manuals, had hip surgery - she couldn’t drive a manual now even if she needed to. Plus I leave the car and keys with my housekeeper whenever I traveled - the car is with her now. She doesn’t do manuals - the alternative was leaving the key with the doorman, which wasn’t going to happen. At least the housekeeper is careful. So this one had to be automatic. One benefit- I can now at least also loan the car to visitors without worrying about the clutch.

I just bought a Tip and love it. Great since I live in London and spend 90% of my time in stop-start traffic. I did not bother considering a manual as it's a PITA and I cba with one when I just want to get to my destination.
Most of your points aren't new but the 5 speed thing is defo an issue as the manual is a 6 speed box so that is a bit odd of Porsche. I guess that was the only box available to them at the time - I understand it's actually a Merc autobox?
I say "issue", it's as much an issue as it is that I only have 3 packets of crisps in the cupboard. ;)

Having driven 996 Tip and. 997 gen 1 tip Turbo, I couldn't live with the steering wheel buttons. PDK is said to be a far better gearbox, but again the steering wheel buttons s don't work for me. The paddles on the sport wheel or retrofitted on 996 / 997 are a good way forward. I went manual in a 997.2 and in hindsight a paddle wheeled PDK would have been a better option. That car looks stunning. The 996 has aged very gracefully in the last few years

I grew up driving the coastal mountain backroads of Northern California. I've owned and abused lots of smaller sports cars. The 4 cylinder ones absolutely needed a manual to squeeze every ounce of power and manipulation I could find, because they were underpowered for my driving style, including the 914. Later, after owning Audis and a BMW both with paddle shifters, and searching for a long time I found a very nice 996 C2 cab, which I wasn't originally interested in. But since it also had a hard top, and was in great shape, I bought it. After the BMW and Audis I didn't care which transmission it had anymore, Condition was more important to me. This car has plenty of power, and I don't miss the left foot because the paddle shifters work well, and I'm still using gears for control anyway. The only time I miss a manual is when the guy in the black Corvette sees me and revs his V8. Its all his car does, so I can live with it. When I get behind the wheel, I grin a lot, the 996 is so nice as an everyday car, very versatile. Open top is a blast and gives a ton of road connectivity. The hard top is quiet and solid. Its like having 2 cars. For me, it just works, to each their own. Owned it 5 years so far, and still smiling. The great thing about Porsche is each one can be purpose built for what ever YOU want. For that reason, this whole conjecture seems irrelevant to me.

In 1997 I ordered a new Boxster, manual in guards red, the salesman said something about guards red one day making a comeback. When the car arrived at the dealership the dealer principal called me and said it looked so good they were ordering one, I think as a demonstrator. Colour is personal, I agree with everything you’re saying and yes I used to panic whenever I left it parked anywhere. Regarding manual vs Auto, the clutch, my height (6ft) and the angle my knee was always at to depress it caused me a lot of pain, when I sold it (back to AFN for a profit - yes really) I vowed I’d get either another Boxster or a 911 and it’d be an auto. Sales of new automatic cars are growing and some cars are only available as automatics, which supports your preference for manuals. It won’t be too long and used manuals will be as hard to find as autos have been in the past. Next time you should talk about sunroofs, personally, I won’t buy a car without one, unless it’s a convertible. I totally get rigidity and low centre of gravity, I’ve driven a few circuits but these days I just want a nice road car with as many options. Great channel and I admire your attention to detail on all the cars you sell.

      @friendsgreenporsche5234  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Ken. Well done you for being one of the few who went against the grain and ordered a Guards Red car - you clearly have good taste. Regarding the sun-roof, quite simply, I prefer the cleaner roof line of a car without. I do however appreciate why some people have a preference for a car with a sun-roof (usually people who don't live in the UK and get a little more sunshine!).

Interesting video. While I wouldn't choose a Guards Red 996/7 I think its nice enough. Not concerned that it makes it flashy, wheras (sorry) I think that spoiler does - ok on a GT3 but a bit knobbish on a stock car. Just my opinion, though I like the sill covers (although Id worry they would hide deteriorating paint/ rust). The centre console is, for me, a bit in your face too, makes it look very plasticky especially as there is no other red in the cabin except the seatbelts which are a way different shade. re the tiptronic, is a bit outdated compared to PDK, have considered one but my car is manual (yes and boring arctic silver!!) - also reading round the subject there is some people who think bore scoring is worse in the tiptronic cars. Although they cant be over revved, they can easily be used to compete in the traffic light grands prix after standing getting all hot. Also if left to themselves can use low revs/ high torque which in some peoples opinion is a main cause of the bore scoring

The tip gets you the best of both worlds if you live the the city. Auto changes without your left thigh growing bigger than your right and use the tip buttons (I've got mine with paddles) for manual shifting. The manual shifting is not going to be much slower than your manual gearbox shifts. All 0-62mph timing for autos are done with allowing the auto gearbox to its own devices and not recorded on manual shifts. Ok, perhaps it loses out on driver involvement but good luck when you are caught in a traffic jam.

1st gear in manual cannot be matched by Tiptronic, and you can enjoy that from every full stop. While my base Carrera has ultra-boring grey interior, I rarely notice it as the drive is so engaging even 4.5 years later and many costs for maintenance. When I want mellow, half the time, I take my Jaguar XJ6 1997. Tiptronic in 2nd and 3rd gear in canyon driving is good though.

Thanks! Pierre

This isn't FG Garage replying, just a Porsche owner, but if you watch these great videos it appears that FG change out IMS bearings pretty much as a matter of course on the cars they sell unless a recent change is documented. From my information, as a 2005 996, your car has the weakest of the 3 possible IMS bearings fitted. I do not know the best bearing so wouldn't want to try to answer that part of your question, but I believe replacements are available now that can be regarded as a permanent fix which really will put your mind at rest.

Tiptronic pros, your gf/wife can drive it home after you’ve had too many drinks, you can eat food/drinks without any problems or difficulty. While in traffic you’re not constantly clutching ,and shifting. “Spirited drives” happen only in the first few months of ownership Driving to dinner happens far more often. Easier to sell to a larger market as anyone can drive one. Also, the market that can afford a 911 is older, not a 20’s kid, looking to drive like an arse. Enthusiasts are rare. Enthusiasts who will spend money rarer.

Good video. Gen 2 Tip is better. I don't have a problem with the Tip. As cars like these and cars in general are 90% emotion and fuelled by 'talk', and emotion. All this talk of driving in 'extremis' all the time. Who does that? I drive most of the time in D but sometimes I change using the buttons. At say 50 mph behind a slower car I can change down 2 gears without moving the lever into manual mode quicker than a manual. And control the car in bends etc etc. Enthusiastic driver; first held a competition licence in 1973. OK, getting on a bit, but.......😄

Totally agree so many people here confuse the gutless 3.4 auto with the 3.6 tip which if driven back to back are worlds apart, you also need to learn how to drive a tip properly but people just don't like them as they have no idea how to drive them properly, the 3.6 tip is a brilliant combination, more power and torque than the 3.4 and better economy too a world apart and I prefer a proper auto to a computerised manual which is pdk
