How Do Australian Farmers Control Millions Of Invasive Animals - Farming Documentary

  • Wild goats and camels are two of the most significant invasive species in Australia, with severe impacts on agriculture and nature. Introduced to Australia in the 1800s for transportation, milk, and meat production, these animals have since become a serious problem. Wild goats are known for their voracious appetite and are capable of consuming a wide variety of vegetation. Their feeding habits can cause significant damage to both crops and native vegetation, leading to habitat degradation, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion. Moreover, feral goats can compete with native wildlife and domesticated animals for food, and are known to spread diseases to livestock.
Camels, on the other hand, are particularly problematic in arid and semi-arid regions of the country. Australia is home to the world's largest population of wild camels, with over 1,3 million animals roaming the Outback. These animals have a significant impact on the environment and agricultural industry, damaging water sources, infrastructure, and vegetation.

I remember the first time I drove across the Nullarbor plain from Adelaide to Perth. Seeing a completely wrecked semi truck on the roadside and the remains of the cause both strewn down the highway and still mangled in the truck gave me much more respect for how large and potentially dangerous camels can be in certain situations.

Camels made a major contribution to the development of Inland Australia from the early 1800s. But there were only about 20,000 camels until they were released in the 1920s. They were instrumental in the building of the Inland Railway from Port Augusta to Darwin. The train now running on that line is called The Ghan. Camel numbers exploded after they were released to the wild because the Australian inland is the best place in the world for a camel. There are more camels in Australia than any other place in the world. Camels are far under utilized in this country, being mostly seen as purely an invasive species rather than seeing them for their value as a milking and beef breed. Camels can easily be domesticated.

Also I hope the person that caught them has the option of either putting the food up for their own family or donating or a combination of the 2. That along with the monetary reward should help make it a program people could afford to participate in. Is it legal for somebody to catch some young and domesticate them for commercial ag purposes?

It's all bullshit, if goats and camels are a problem, what about the millions of European cattle?
If things were handled properly the first mentioned two species should be able to generate profit, not loss. It is our economic system that causes most of the fuss, you see, with those feral animals it is hard to decide whose property they are and on top of that they are not standing readily at some place next to the farmhouse, waiting to be shipped to the nearest slaughterhouse. On the positive side is the fact that they do not generate cost to breed, feed or shelter them and there is also no expense for the veterinarian.

As a native of South Texas, I can confirm how invasive and destructive hogs can be. One thing that isn't mentioned about the geese is they can be extremely aggressive toword humane. A small child could very severely injured in an attack. "Swamp Rats" are actually called "Nutria". Keep up the great work. Cheers, Dick from Vancovuer.

smthing like this, Australian farmers and land managers use a range of methods, including:
Baiting: Farmers often use baiting as a method of controlling invasive animals. They lay poison baits in areas where the animals are known to frequent, which are often protected by bait stations to ensure that other animals do not consume the bait.
Trapping: Trapping is another common method of controlling invasive animals. Farmers use live traps to catch and remove animals from the environment, reducing their impact on native wildlife.
Shooting: Shooting is also used to control invasive animals, particularly those that are larger or more dangerous, such as wild dogs. Farmers may use firearms or hire professional hunters to cull populations of these animals.
Fencing: Farmers also use physical barriers like fences to prevent invasive animals from accessing sensitive areas. For example, farmers may erect a fence around a national park to keep feral pigs out and protect the native wildlife.
Biological control: In some cases, farmers may use biological control methods to control invasive animals. This involves introducing a predator or disease that specifically targets the invasive species. For example, the introduction of the myxoma virus in the 1950s was successful in reducing rabbit populations in Australia.
