i went to school for art, and taught art, and i still love watching Beginners vids because i often learn or am reminded of things. i like your style and content. New fan
i watched this 6 years ago and was like "i could never do that it looks so boring" 6 years later and im buying pens and ink because i got to use them in art class
As a lifelong sketcher/doodler I am never surprised by the amount (you) can still learn about same - your approach is easy, casual, & above all, fun - thank you for this presentation, & yes, I have subscribed :D
This was so so so helpful! I have a bottle of Indian ink but I've never used it because I thought you needed a special pen! I never thought about using brushes. I can't wait to try it!
I remember 4 years ago, I decided to try learn how to ink my drawings. I never had any of the good pens, I only used writing pens. But this video was what inspired me so much to keep on with drawing! I'm so glad I found this video again 💕
Great topic! You are totally adorkable too, I could listen to this stuff for hours. Thanks for sharing your knowledge freely and in an entertaining way!
Very helpful. I'm just starting to mess with dip pens for lettering. Gothic style, calligraphy, etc. This video makes me want to branch out beyond simply lettering, though. Well done.
I’d add that you should prep your nib. You can run it through a flame and then wipe with saliva and a paper towel. Some people use potatoes (stick the nib in for a few minutes). The point (no pun) is to remove the factory oils that prevent the nibs from rusting. The ink struggles to hold on to the nib otherwise.
Mary, Great tutorial!!! I'm mainly an ink artist and I find your instruction very easy to follow for anyone wanting to start painting with ink. Ink is great stuff!!!
aahh this came on my recommended and it made me realize this was one of the first videos (alongside your watercolor ones) that introduced me to art and motivated me to start. 7 years later and my relationship with my drawings and painting has become so important to me, even though I'm not a professional my drawings really make me feel happy and I wish that seven years from now I keep growing and evolving just like you. Thank you Mary Doodles :)
theres also dry brushing which is putting your brush in ink no water taking some off and painting right onto paper it leaves these scratchy ink lines these are good for adding a fur like affect or grass or how ever u wanna use it
i’ve been someone who loves the chaos of painting but love the darkness/sketchiness of drawings. and i recently started using ink and i looove it 10/10
Hey Mary!! I originally was a subscriber of your channel and was in school at the time this video came out. I had completely lost your channel and just recently rediscovered it. Completely love your work, love the uniqueness of you. I hope you never change Mary. Lots of love
Just discovered you. And wished to God you were my teacher years ago. I'm old(senior). I gave up on art because of boring teachers. The last two years since my retirement I've come back. And yes still boring teachers. But you young lady, I can honestly say you are a rarity. Fun!! You actually are entertaining....and extremely informative....
I am really glad I found your channel. I used to draw all the time in middle school, and I got pretty good. Then, when I started high school back in 2011, my work load got much heavier, and I didn't have much time to draw. I only drew occasionally in my first two years, then for some reason just stopped drawing altogether in my junior year. I have now graduated, and have almost completely forgotten how to draw. I have been meaning to start drawing again for some time, but never had the confidence to just do it. I always thought that my drawings looked bad, and that I would never get any better. Even the slightest mistake would make me want to give up. Over the last five-ish years, my mom (who is an art major) has bought me various drawing materials for birthdays and Christmas in hopes of getting me drawing again, but I still beat myself up over every little thing I did wrong, and held myself up to such impossibly high standards to the point that it wasn't even fun anymore. I almost gave up on drawing completely. Then I found some art channels here on TH-cam, and started to feel like maybe I could learn again. What really pushed me over the edge was this video about how to use India ink. Unfortunately, my Poppy just passed away recently. He was also an artist, and had a lifetimes collection worth of art books and supplies. When my mom was cleaning out his house, she collected a couple boxes of miscellaneous art supplies that she thought she or I might want to try out. Among this stuff was about a dozen dip pen handles, a small box of about 50 assorted nibs, and a half used 8 oz. bottle of India ink. I had no idea what to do with it at first, but then I happened across this video a week or so ago. Since then, I have started following some of your other drawing tutorials, working up to the point where I feel ready to use the India ink. After watching your videos, rather than feeling intimidated and disgruntled at the idea of drawing, I feel inspired and determined to build up my skills again. Thank you for your awesome videos, and for reawakening my passion for drawing.
Hey Mary Doodles! I was wondering if you could do a How To Art video on perspective. I'm having loads of problems with it at the moment and was hoping you might have some advice!
thanks! I've been experimenting with india ink and a waterbrush (dipping in the ink, not putting it in the brush reservoir), and these tips are very helpful!
Well done. It is difficult to put your work out there. It’s putting part of you out there. You inspired me to quit throwing everything I draw away, or hiding it under my bed. I’ve done that for 30 years now. I can’t thank you enough.
A tutorial I've always looked for would be on how to create interesting lighting. Like how to give a warm or cold feel, or dramatic. Just something on how to make your lighting not boring?
Oddly enough I've found that a good source of information/tutorials on lighting, composition, temperature and mood actually came from books on art, a good one for me was a watercolour sketching tutorial book from the public library.
+Skullzer96 I know this was talked about a long time ago, but youtube artist BayleeJae does a ton of Copic marker stuff, it's her favorite medium. Look her up if you want copics! :)
thank you mary. i needed some help figuring out exactly how you dip the nib. i'm having fun doing INK BLOTTING technique but felt like i was using the pen not quite right. and i wasn't. i was using it like a toothpick, not dipping it down far enough. thank you so much for your super nice and helpful video!!!!
I've been waiting for this tutorial! My tools of choice are sepia acrylic ink and manga pens (G Pen for main lines, School Nib for smaller details, and Saji Pen for straight lines and background) But I do use a lot of black ink when I ink my mangas. I plan on getting purple and blue for sweet and underwater drawings too! One thing I learned the hard way, tho: "Permanence AA" does not mean waterproof!! I wasted $6 on a good drawing ink online only to find out the lines bleed when I applied watercolor :( I really thought it meant it was permanent... Also, make sure the nib is on snugly! To quote one of my favorite drawing books "A loose pen holder is bad news!"
PixiePrincess501 Good tips!!! Thank you! One thing I may have forgotten to specify is that there are some differences between inks so check the labels. And I guess permanent doesn't mean waterproof...weird.
QUESTION How are you so original? I love art and am good at what I do (I hope/think?) but I can never think of good ideas that I am passionate about and proud of. You've been super original with your wacky, silly, *beautiful* drawings. But how?
Steal like an artist. Nitpick stuff you like from other artists and twist it to your will. For example i took a few notes from marry on how she does eyes. (This is for getting a unique style) by combining stuff from orher artists and making it your own youll have a style all to your own. Its worth noting that your style is always changing for the most part.
If you want to come up with unique ideas that youre passionate about i recomend you do/watch/read etc. stuff your passionate about that inspires you. Look at other artist take something they did that you really liked and draw a differant person but how they did. also one of my artist friend said some of the coolest stuff hes made was when hes was a little bit drunk or little bit high this is true to a digaree. The opposite can also be true if you take perscription pills dont take them if youre on a bunch of stuff for mood or adhd this can hinder creativity to an extent ive noticed
Also if you try new stuff that you normally dont do and keep like an art journal and sum up your experiences with a drawing thats usually how you get some cool stuff.
Note: I usually try using models like from others' art but end up doing complete rip-offs from said artists. A reference is one thing but I can never actually draw something new. Do I need figure studies? Do I need to have an inspiration attack? How can I come up with a mental image and draw it how *I* want it to be?
You're beautiful, you have an amazing voice, you're funny, you show exactly what the title says, straight to the point and you handle to not bore anyone, I really liked it, you gained a new suscriber :)
had to look this video up again and rewatch it since i'm planning on getting india ink and a pen. it was very helpful and answered the questions i had. thanks!

Honestly, I have been thinking of getting more into inking art and I'm really happy your video randomly popped up for me. Thank you for the awesome tips!
This is really helpful for me. I've been interested in dappling in watercolor and possibly ink. I found bristol board, and I decided I'll get some ink now.
Finally! Something helpful, and a video with energy! I'm a beginner. I went to the store to buy my first ink. There were India and Walnut and I can only afford one. So my bf and I did rock paper and scissor :) we ended up with India ink.
Your video was extremely helpful. I was watching so many videos and they went on and on about irrelevant stuff. Your video was very to the point and included so much of your experience and tips. :)
I never thought that the word "poops" would be so elegantly written with inks... *applauds*
i went to school for art, and taught art, and i still love watching Beginners vids because i often learn or am reminded of things.

Saliva or potatoes.

Who else is preparing for Inktober?
[slowly raises hand] glad to know i'm not the only one
Jackson Faye first time, and I’ve never inked before too, this is kinda hard
Yeah I am too, my mom suggested it to me since her and my sister are doing it, but I have never inked before.
Just finished for day 2 a few minutes ago
Not me since i already missed it and know that i wont be able to do it since school is crap and im quite busy. I just want to know how to ink lol
theres also dry brushing which is putting your brush in ink no water taking some off and painting right onto paper it leaves these scratchy ink lines these are good for adding a fur like affect or grass or how ever u wanna use it
I’ve known it as a watercolor technique but didn’t think to include it for ink 😝
Thanks for pointing that out.
Amazing artistry and very well produced and edited and packed with info, Funny too! thanks Mary for the lesson.
i’ve been someone who loves the chaos of painting but love the darkness/sketchiness of drawings. and i recently started using ink and i looove it 10/10

When I didn't or couldn't get the fine tip nibs I would split a nib in half and use that for drawing fur or hair. Turned out great.
What a wonderfully educational video. You were so complete in your explanations as well as detailed. Thank you! Beautiful work by the way.

You make me want to draw more, you are SO fun and energetic!
No matter what you draw with this pen... it looks awesome.

Concise, useful, efficient and humorous. Especially the end. 14/10 will watch again with friends.
This was a great video , very informative. I have been getting into Copic makers and I was wondering if you can please make a video of them.
Skullzer96 I would also be interested in Copic videos. My wife loves copics and I think she would enjoy a tutorial!
I've always wondered how to use Coptic markets. I've never used them before and was wondering how to use hem before I invest.
Oooh yes copics would be a nice vid

i love your tutorial. I like how you actually talk in depth about what your doing. i'll be watching you.

Do a one line challenge, where you can't lift you pen/pencil off of the paper!
I like the vibes of the video. Not only do we learn cool stuff, it is entertaining too! 😀

Mary Doodles - you rock. Informative, yet so amusing! And nice penmenship to boot!
thanks for the info- i learned a lot.
I bought ink before and never got around to using it. This video was so lovely and made me want to dive in and use it. Thank you, Mary! :D
oi, just wondering if you would know, Mary, can a lefty is dip pens to draw and doodle whatnot or is it just for right handed peeps? cause I'm mostly a left handed artist person but I do write with my right hand. if can, any tips for a lefty?
+Dragon21Studios I can't say, as I've never been left handed...Nor do I associate with left handed people. They're ok, I guess. :) I feel like these pens are very universal. Any thoughts from leftys out there?
mmm that sucks... the whole world is mostly for right handed peeps after all :/ guess I have to force myself to get better at drawing, painting with my right hand then. The world is a cruel place for left handed peeps :(
Lots of the time, if you write with ink pens you may smudge, because your hand goes over the ink, so you'd have to be very careful with drawing. I'm sure if you look you can find some invention to help with this.
Hope this helped :)
+Dragon21Studios I guess just like right-handed people can smudge if they draw sth on the left side and then happen to put their arm on sth they drew before - lefties can draw on the right side and then happen to put their arm on sth they drew earlier. Either youre just careful as a right-handed or left-handed person or you draw structured. As a leftie you should start from the top-right then and work to the bottom-left.
Now.... Im a left-handed artist - at least thats how I call myself :D and it works just as good as it should for right-handed peps. Its not like it makes the drawing process different is it?
+Dragon21Studios -- Two answers: 1. There *are* left-handed nibs and holders available. Look for lefty or left-handed when you search online, or ask someone if you don't find them at your local store. I'm right-handed, but I've seen them available for calligraphy and drawing. 2. You can modify how you hold the pen and whether you put your hand down on the page. But when using a dip pen (or a fountain pen), try not to put the heel of your hand on the paper anyway. Finally someone with a usefull video on TH-cam how to use a dip pen. Thank you.
Mary looks a lot like Kari Byron from Mythbusters.
Best intro to ink ever. Kudos to you!
"Wait, they come in pints?!?" Love it lol
There are also ink blocks. I really love those, because they are fun to play with, and you have more control over the concentration of the ink.
You got a sub strictly because of the fly thing just to let you know
I love you.
Just started looking into using ink and Im very glad i found this video, it was exactly what i needed. Thank you!
You had me at "for the internet is dark and full of terrors." :-)

I didn't see the poops until it was too late.
Hi Mary Doodles, thank you for this video! I needed a refresher on how to use it and this was most helpful and your sense of humor is refreshing.
I only watched the full add because Dan and Phil told me not to skip the add...
I love to learn from a talented artist. Thank you for this tutorial ❤️

So much info packed in 10 mins! Thanks!
Your work is stunning Mary, congratulations and nice to meet you.
Your video was extremely helpful. I was watching so many videos and they went on and on about irrelevant stuff. Your video was very to the point and included so much of your experience and tips. :)
I love this video! I can already draw with ink and I know these technics already but I'm still watching this video over and over. It's so god
