    I totally agree with growing more mild peppers and tasty peppers rather than super hot ones. I happen to have a perennial tree pepper in my yard that I inherited. It's a super hot rocoto pepper and I get hundreds every season. My preservation method is to make a fermented hot pepper sauce with 30% hot peppers and 70% sweet peppers like bell peppers. It ferments in salted water (2T non iodized salt in each quart of water you use) for 7-15 days depending on temperatures. (likes 72º up to 98º or so) I strain the peppers out of the liquid and blend them adding the extra liquid as needed. Then we freeze. I save the fermenting liquid and we drink a shot of spicy probiotic fermented pepper juice each day. Fermenting them uses them up quickly and the hot sauce is customizable.

      If you boil the hot sauce before bottling it'll stop the fermentation and sauce will keep much longer. Especially if you ad some vinegar to taste. Also boil your glassware to sterilize.

    I’m not a fan of hot peppers, but I love the various sweet and savory bell peppers and this year my plants have been going crazy. I’m getting ready to make a second loaf of confetti bread, which is just bread with something mixed in and I use my peppers. It make the most delicious sandwich bread with a great pop of flavor.

    My peppers really suffered in the intense heat and drought of TX. Piquillo peppers were the only ones that did well. I have some California Wonder, Sweet Banana and Hatch . They are now in the greenhouse just begining to flower. I added worm casting (thanks to you) and some extra mulch. I may see some fruits this Fall🍁

      Same thing happened to me. Peppers tend to not produce once temps get higher than 95°. I’m in central Texas and for months I struggled to get fruit. Now that temps are down I’m getting a much better harvest! I hope the same for you.

      Same here in Dallas, I kept pruning my peppers all summer to keep them small, now I see better looking leaves and flowers since the weather cooled down to 90s.

      Same here! Im in south texas and I had one flush of peppers on my serranos and cayennes and since it was 100+ already in May, no more peppers would set. Hoping for more in the fall and I’m planing to over-winter them!

    This year, I filled the top level of a GreenStalk with banana peppers and they've done really well! One turned out to be a Cal Wonder (which was a mistake) but they have also produced well even on a small plant. I put a small 2 foot bamboo stake to support it and live in a very windy place and haven't had any issue. I have other plants in grow bags in a small greenhouse tent and I think the GreenStalk has done better. I think I may plant all my small pepper plants like this next year!

    This is my first year for chillies and peppers. Just starting with hot cayenne and a sweet capsicum variety (bell pepper for you Americans haha) in the hopes I can figure out how to grow them properly since my area can be really unpredictable weather wise (Southern Hemi, so heading into spring now!). So far, not enough sun, so I’ll be definitely trying some methods to keep the warmth in! Wish me luck :)

    I'm on the east coast (Northern Virginia, officially zone 7a) and also have a microclimate -- forest, with a lot of moisture nearly year-round. Fewer really hot days and few droughts, little need for watering. I've found peppers are the single most reliable crop here despite their reputation for liking hot dry places, though very large pods have trouble ripening before frost. I concur a variety of heat levels is useful, including the low end of the scale, where some mild peppers smaller than Bells (like Jimmy Nardello) are extremely tasty and versatile. Some varieties you grow (e.g. Biquinho) are marginal here due to a shorter season and a cooler, wetter climate than zone 7a would suggest.

    I saw in the garden burnout video that you like your peppers sautéed in butter. Butter and soy sauce in the very end is delicious too!

    I am in zone 9a Texas and My peppers (poblanos, jalapeño, green peppers, sweet peppers, grajillo, & shisito) did not do well in The Drought through mid August. I moved pots under a 40% shade cloth many weeks ago, but heat still too much for them. However the shishito has been putting out tiny 1 inch little guys, which I was happy since these are now my favorite pepper. It’s been raining almost everyday for past two weeks and temps low 90’s, so Today I moved them from under the shade cloth to open sun and hopefully they’ll now produce until frost.

    This year has been extremely hot and dry, but with some work and care all of them of producing or just starting to flower.
    My favorites this year have been my shishitos, Korean greens, averjanski, kalugerista, Jimmie nerdellos, and my jalapeños. I'm also growing assorted bells, anahiem and frescos, tiburons, Thais, Chile de arbol, serano, hot Portugals, Tobasco, and scorpion. There are so peppers to choose from

    i eat a lot of super hots, so that’s always been what’s best for me.. there isn’t a day without heat during summer. this year i’ll have enough to make several different powders which i’m very excited about.

    I grew a lot of peppers but I got small peppers because I grew too many in the same containers. So next year I hope to get more containers and grow one per container.

    I started some birds eye chili from seed earlier this month on the bonkers chance that maybe, just MAYBE I can get some of those peppers before the first Philly frost so I can have fresh peri peri sauce all winter. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope alive! Worst case scenario, I stick them under my Aerogarden light when it gets too cold

    In my greenstalks, I use welded wire fence wrapped around it as a trellis. If you cut it so it has "spikes" on one end, just push those into the bottom tier and you are good to go. I grew a greenstalk full of sweet peas last spring using this.

    Where I live we rarely get snow and what we do get is less than 4 inches. It usually happens in the month of January or early February. I normally put my peppers out in late march early April. A week after I put them out we had a surprise snow storm that dumped 2 feet if snow and killed my entire pepper season. Next year I'm waiting until May 1st

    I've never thought about using my Greenstalk for peppers! I may have to do that! I do have a Chinese 5-color pepper in it that is doing well, but it is too hot for me to eat. I just think they are beautiful plants. The pepper on the Chinese 5-color start off purple then go to orange, yellow, red and cream.

    Absolutely gorgeous peppers. I will look for that Escamillo pepper. Just cuz my mom's last name was Escamilla. I will look into that fabric, as I too am close to the coast.

      I have been using bamboo stakes inside of a 5 gallon bucket. I bet his suggestion will save WAAY MORE SPACE

    Thanks for this video! I bought a pack of biquinho seeds with my recent seed haul because I read that they’re a delicious snacker pepper (both fresh and pickled), so I’m excited to grow them! It’ll have to wait til next year though, cuz I’m in zone 4-5 and I don’t yet have an indoor growing space set up to get them started.

      FOUR!! Perfect number to start with. I have successfully grown celery-from seed and rooting the bottom, carrots, leek, strawberries and lots of lettuce top tier in the spring. Congratulations. You will enjoy them very much.

    Sweet peppers is my favorite veggie, and I'm not being able to grow it here, Canada, zone 4b. If I get 1 pepper on a plant, I'm happy. So I just abandonned. Bot OMG I would be thrilled to get the amount you have!

    Escamillo will be added to the list. I’ve ditched bell peppers to this type of pepper. Hard to believe how much I’ve enjoyed the use of homegrown frozen peppers through the winter. Lol, I thought, I would never buy a bag of frozen, but love my own for soups and even sautés.first year growing the Shishitos…I better get more started to make sure we have plenty!! Was that sugar rush over wintered or was that all from just one season of growth? 😅 of course I have some of them in the works!

    I planted my peppers so close together ( VERY much holding hands) it was kinda of a experiment but I didn't once have to support any of them they did it on their own and all of the varieties have produced like one never seen

      I think I am also going to increase the planting density, it helps produce more of a microclimate, reduce scalding, and they support each other.

    lol, in my family it's the opposite. Hot peppers won't last in my family but sweet peppers and savory peppers will sit around for a while. Hot pepper is a requirement for our food.

      The peppers didn't seem to suffer from much of any pest! Companion planting alyssum underneath should help bring even more pollinators without competing with or crowding your plants

    Thanks for the video!My peppers are always thin walled. I amend my soil,I’ve pruned and not pruned. Always thin walls with no crunch. Any clues why?

      Consistent watering makes all the difference. Use a lot of mulch, too - three or four inches in my climate (Texas). I also plant them where they will get some afternoon shade, e.g. east of tomatoes, and closer together so their roots are shaded. They don't like wet soil, but they hate dry and their fruit is the first place that that shows up.

    Great video Jacques! I have an abundance of Fresno peppers from a plant now in it’s 3rd season. I did make an easy pepper sauce but I’d like to know the best way to keep them for future use. As you said, storing in the refrigerator just makes them moldy. I did a few years ago dry some red jalapeños in the sun, smoke them and then grind them into a chipotle powder which worked great, but I am thinking of just freezing all these Fresnos whole and then use them later for more pepper sauce. Any thoughts?
    Also: I have to wonder why the heck the Sriracha sauce people (Huy Fong Foods) have a tremendous shortage of peppers to the point you can’t find any of their sauce in stores? Maybe they need to come to you to supply them!

      I think freezing would work, drying and making pepper flakes or powder is also great. Roasting and canning is another option.

    Did you do anything extra under the shade cloth for pollination? I used a shade cloth this year and was wondering if I should leave it open in the morning or just give the peppers a shake?

      When I cover them I leave both ends open to ensure pollinators can come in whenever they want. Luckily for peppers they can totally self pollinate.

    Haven't been very successfull growing peppers outdoors here in Germany. Just not enoug heat for a really big harvest. Also the days in the summer can be too long, 16h of sun can give sunburns. Strange combination. But climate chance is showing, more heat and maybe some sun protection might be the way. Like your box of fabric, that might help.

      The fabric cover is the exact solution for this problem! It will create a nice hot humid microclimate and your peppers will love it

    Can you propagate peppers? I have a Thai Dragon chilli plant that has some how grown over a metre tall and one of the branches is really long. Could i propagate this in water to form another plant? I bought this from a store when it was about a foot tall. The rest of my peppers were grown from seed, all treated the same way but this one seems to have shot up, one main stem and then branched off like a tree.
    I am growing hot chilli peppers for the first time as well and so excited to see fruits!
    I am also growing sweet bell peppers again but this time also putting some outside. I was surprised that something had eaten the leaves as i thought they would be too peppery to eat. Both the Thai and sweet bell pepper are at the flowering stage atm.
    I am planning to over winter them but have a big problem with spider mites. I did treat them with water and a bit of soap and they seem to have come back healthy but the old leaves seem to have these yellow lines. Should i just prune these off?

      Yes you can propagate peppers like you do tomatoes and eggplants. I plant them directly in the soil and water regularly until I see new leaves. It beats growing seedlings from seeds because, you are growing mature plants already. Happy growing👩🏽‍🌾

      @@mammaec Thank you so much for replying. I just cut the branch off the last sprout. It's about 2 feet long, cut at 45degrees and popped it in some water and sprayed the leaves. I like to see some root growth before dapping in the root gel before planting. I haven't dealt with pepper cutting before. Also my first winter of trying to over winter them. x

      You can totally propagate peppers but it is best to do so with young green cuttings, once they get a little brown or woody they are not as forgiving

    My only concern with the greenstalk is... Won't having all those different varieties of peppers so close together mess with the flavor of all or some of them? Peppers cross pollinate so easily.

    For those biquinho peppers, can anyone (Bueller? Anyone?) tell me if the amount of seeds in them is too much when eating? I tried one from grocery store and all I got was a mouthful of seeds, which was rather yucky. They are SUPER cute and would love to give them a try but the seed factor is off putting......Thanks :-)

      I generally don't, I find the advantages are not worth it and or are over hyped. Topped peppers are harder to support as well.

    I have black aphids and ants in my shishito peppers🤬 I’ve never had aphids on peppers before What do I do? Spray water? Neem oil? HELP!!!
