  • Splash Mountain is in the process of a major re-skin to Tianas Bayou Adventure. Will it be great? Or will it be a disaster? History tells us it could go either. Let's look at every major Disneyland attraction re-skin. It's history, what happened, and where it ranks. Was it great? Or was it a disaster?

In response to some comments, I intentionally limited this to just Disneyland.
I also limited it to only those attractions that are still in operation today. But if I had included the people mover, you can bet it would have gone down as the worst re-skin ever.
One attraction that was a true miss though was Country Bear Jamboree for Winnie the Pooh. It's in the mid range for me, but in the end I would put that as a POSITIVE re-skin. Winnie the Pooh > Country Bear Jamboree.

A video on everything that's been rethemed or reskined at DCA would need to be several hours long. It's almost a completely different park now compared to opening day.

By far the best video you ever produced. I loved every minute of it. I will admit it. I’m 67. My first trip to Disneyland was in 1970, when I was 14. I remember the old attractions you highlighted. You brought back such memories for me. I also remember the booth where you could talk with someone in Disneyworld and actually see them talking to you! We were blown away lol. Once again, thank you

You forgot the best reskin EVER! Rocket Rods! Not only did it reskin the People Mover into dead track, it reskinned the Cicle Vision into a Que! It also reskinned the rockets above into a non-working sculpture. That one ride reskinned three! I dont think I can find any single ride that reskinned 3 attractions.

Being born in 1976 and visiting Disneyland for the first time, America Sings, Adventure Thru Inner Space, and Circle-Vision were the perfect introduction of what Disneyland represented at the time: educating and entertaining. I fondly miss these but thanks to TH-cam, vinyl/CD and DVD, I can revisit and rekindle memories.

What's extra amazing about Big Thunder, is that incredibly dark indoor area between the load station and the first lift hill is 100% themed. You can't see any of it, but i had to walk out through it once, and it was stunning!

While you did miss all of the re-skinned/themed attractions at DCA, there are a few you missed at Disneyland. The most important being Winnie the Pooh and Country Bear Jamboree. You could also count Videopolis and the new Fantasyland Theatre as a re-skin. Another is the Disneyland Railroad - it did not open with the Grand Canyon diorama, nor the Primeval World diorama. Also, what about the People Mover becoming Rocket Rods? Fantasyland Autopia, Tomorrowland Autopia reskinned to one Autopia. Tahitian Terrace reincarnations. Finally, the Motorboat Cruise area re-skins.

Correction about CircleVision. It became the queue for Rocket Rods. The Anerican Space Experience was a small mini exhibit. It literally only took up the space that WAS the Fastpass machines, which is now stroller parking.

I would have included Snow White's Scary Adventure / Snow White's Enchanted Wish. Yeah, it's Snow White either way on one hand, but on another hand you get rid of things like the haunted forest and swamp with the crocodiles, and the optical illusion of the witch's hand that seemed to reach out to offer the poisoned apple. . . there were other changes, too. Today you have instead more of the story as shown in the original Disney animated film. It's very different to me, but maybe it's all Snow White to you?

LOVED this video David, great work! Another re-skin I'd have loved to see a comparison on would have been Tom Sawyer's Island vs Pirate's Lair, especially if you consider TSI from it's later years when , often due to liability concerns, they had to subtract from the experience. But the effort you put forward on this clearly shows, loved seeing the old footage (I spied Ian in the Buzz Lightyear section! Hope that dude is well, miss seeing him on screen)

I love this video! It was fun seeing all of the old rides again! However, I laughed pretty hard at the end. You spent the entire video saying that injecting IP’s into old rides is not your favorite but, at the end, you have faith that injecting an IP into an old ride will be great.
I think reskinning IPs can work. Nemo’s submarine was a good one in my opinion. Winnie the Pooh is fun for small kids. Kids want to come and see their favorite characters in rides. There defiantly needs to be a balance though. I think the tree house will be great, and Tianas new ride will be a better story to tell. Disneyland just needs more balance of IP rides and Originals.

I wouldn't mind if they took it out to replace it but I would still definitely want an experience similar to it because of how unique it is. Also I would want them to keep the land's theme of exploring different types of space.

I already miss hearing "howdayadoo..." in Critter Country. That ride is embedded in my Disney soul. I believe it will be done very well, it has to be since they've taken out a fan favorite but for me it won't be better... To much nostalgia. The single best thing Disney could do would be to bring back The People Mover. There's been a dip in creativity around the park and while bringing back The People Mover doesn't sound like a creative move, it certainly could be with updated technology. Keep up the great work!

There were 3 autopias and now only one. The miniature autopia (closed in 1966) was a delight to me. I was the youngest child in our family and often didn't make the height requirement on rides that my siblings loved. Minature autopia was just the opposite. They didn't get to ride it. It was just me and my dad, and I got to drive the car. Having just one autopia means the ride is longer, and the line moves faster. But having a ride in Tomorrow Land just for little kids was nice.

In terms of Star Tours, it was interesting with how it replaced Adventure Thru Inner Space. However, it's also notable how it transitioned from the original ride (where you're with Captain RX-24 going to Endor every time) to the randomized flight sequence today. I got to ride the OG Star Tours plenty of times from 2005-2010, and I have to give it credit for being one of the things that introduced me to Star Wars altogether. The randomized flight sequence on The Adventures Continue is great, with them even adding newer segments from the newer movies, but the charm of the original ride is still felt by many fans. Captain RX-24 is now even in Oga's Cantina as a DJ in Galaxy's Edge. I also wanted to make this in tribute to the late great Paul Reubens.

One of your best videos to date, David! I enjoyed every second of this one!!! Agreed on Thunder Mountain and Tony Baxter. My comment is about Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. My family was thrilled when they announced Princess and the Frog as the reskin as it’s one of our favorite Disney films. But that all faded when the storyline was announced as a sequel story, which means beloved characters like Ray and Faucilier are dead, that the songs will not be the ones from the film, that it’s now a tour through a salt mine and you get to see where she now makes “hot sauce” from her new co-op food organization and then get to buy it when you exit. An absolute magic killer for what could have been a beautiful and magical experience with the source material. As my oldest daughter said, she wants Princess Tiana, not CEO Tiana. I think this is going to be a misfire. And it should have been at the top of the list of BEST reskins. I don’t think it has a chance with this too-real-world storyline. I hope I’m wrong but with those 'modern' style art pieces going up outside the barn entrance in WDW, which is said to be Tiana's new office... I'm losing hope.

Ahhh ty David for a great nostalgia trip! Gotta agree with pretty much everything, tho as a kid Innerspace was my absolute fave ride, yes even above my long & current fave Pirates (missed a trick there, Jack Sparrow could be gone tomorrow as far as I’m concerned!) But I do adore Star Tours, way more than most probably ;)
When I went with my grandma once a year 1969 to 1976, we always saw Carousel, then I suppose America Sings. (Ty for the clips, vaguely recall it.) Looking forward to my first WDW visit to see Carousel again, even in its more “modern” form.
The subs rly excited me when they finally reopened (my other former “most fave” as a kid) so I made friends & fam wait forever in line, & what a letdown. No one was pleased with me… ah well.
Vehemently hated Tarzan treehouse, can’t wait for the new version, it looks super.
I don’t recall the train before BTM, but I do remember teepees & folks dressed as “Indians” way back in the day. Um so, yes, updates to all that were all to the good. They could even do quite a bit better imho. LOVE BTM tho, even the newer flashy hill is ok, whatever.
So, I’m very happy for the Bayou Adventure, very much looking forward & I have high hopes!

Better is highly subjective. Finding Nemo's submarines are constantly packed, it draws children and adults as horrific as it is. That's one type of measure of better. Splash Mountain was near and dear to me, I grew up watching commercials during my Saturday morning cartoons and then my parents took me to Disneyland and we all rode it together. The only reason I had returned all these years after was to ride and remember that specific time in my life. Getting a pennant, some Mickey Mouse ears with my name on it done right in front of me, and some memories of Soarin' over California. That was my Disneyland. With the exception of Soarin' during Food and Wine, all of my Disneyland no longer exists. Pair that with large crowds, high prices, and the destruction of Splash. My version of better was erased, even if the popular consensus is that Tiana's knocked it out of the park. Which, I mean, come on....look at what's happening to the parks. Do you think the kind of love that went into Big Thunder exists now? Sadly, better Disney will exist in my memories as I struggle to find a compelling reason to go back after my Magic Key expires. I do feel fortunate to have been able to ride Splash a few final times. I only hope that children making memories now, are able to look back on that love I experienced decades forward in time.

I will give the Splash Mountain replacement the benefit of the doubt. I, along with a good many others visited DCA in October 2016 for the primary purpose of saying goodbye to Tower of Terror - I was firmly prepared to dislike the reskin (I'm not much of a MCU fan - having seen few of the movies), but I have to say I absolutely love the Guardians res-theme. Rocket is my favorite Guardian and the redo was absolutely a great thing. I like the exhibits in the lobby more, the pre-show, and the music is wonderful. So yes, I was sad to see Splash go, but am open to seeing what might come in the future. Change is the only inevitable.

Love the video. I’m old enough to have experienced almost all of the long-gone or original versions of those classic attractions. I have fond memories of them but I really wonder if they would have the same appeal to me today. Technology and society has changed and I’ve changed along with it.

I totally agree with your list here. I thought you were going mention the reskin of the Circlerama theater for the Rocket Rods queue when talking about Buzz Lightyear and the evolution of the Circlerama space. I remember seeing the movies about the future of automotive transportation playing in the circle theater while waiting for the ride. And I completely agree about the People Mover - so sad!

    Armchair imagineer here:
Imagine they put a rollercoaster *above* the Nemo lagoon...
Now imagine there being sections of the lagoon where underwater walls allow for level changes in the water....
Now imagine seeing a ride train dip beneath the surface level right into the cave...
See? Anything is possible if you skim over the heavy amount of queue engineering and possible ride closure/retrackings.

Being someone who’s first trip to Disneyland was in 1959 at age 2, and was a CM in 1977 for a couple of years, then getting the annual pass the very first year they had it in the mid-1980’s (at $100!) I can honestly say I have seen most every change at Disneyland except the first 4 years.
Overall I agree with David, especially about Tomorrowland. One not his list was the short lived Rocket Rods that replaced the Peoplemover and who’s queue went through the former CircleVison theater (the screens were still there, showing 1950’s DIsney animated space cartoons). And it is why as you go to the left of the old Peoplemover ramp to Galaxy Grill is slopes up. That is because the Rocketrod queue went underneath in a tunnel, then up a ramp (or stairs) to get to the load area.
So Rocketrods has the distinction of replacing two beloved Walt-era attractions - The Peoplemover and CircleVsion (aka Circlerama)!
And I loved the original Mine Train Through Natures Wonderland! I was a CM the year it closed. Very sad at the time, but they did a bang-up job with Big Thunder. I just wish they would have routed it by the river as the Mine Train did.

Great video! Some things that maybe could've been included:
    Peoplemover becoming Rocket Rods
Country Bears becoming Winnie the Pooh
Tom Sawyer Island's Pirates Lair overlay
    Videopolis becoming Fanatsyland Theater
Space Stage becoming Magic Eye Theater

Sky ride and people mover were favorites of mine when I was a kid! Great job showing the old vs. the new

As a kid who had just experienced Toy Story Funhouse summer of '96, I wrote a letter suggesting they put in a Pizza Planet. They sent back the typical "We don't take outside ideas, but keep it up and you could be an imagineer" letter w/ the latest Disney Adventures issue.
TWO YEARS LATER, REDD ROCKETT'S PIZZA PORT OPENED!
As stated in this video, I clearly wasn't the only one asking, but I had to double take on that first visit to New Tomorrowland.

I’m loving all the vintage footage of Disneyland. Thanks David. This was my childhood. I loved Carousel of Progress. I can still hear our family singing along. So many of the rides mentioned have memories for me. I have a pic of me and my family on the mine train and the pack mules. My grandfather loved the submarines. I was there a day before the official opening of Finding Nemo. Cast previews were happening. I was so disappointed to miss the opening until a cast member saw my disappointment and sneaked us on as long as I could get out my wheelchair which I did. I felt so special and full of Disney Magic because of that one cast member. Because of that, I love the finding Nemo ride and those memories. I think all the rides you mentioned have good memories for me. Can’t wait to make more memories with my children and grandchildren. ❤️

I might be one of the few that actually liked the 1998 Tomorrow Land retheme, I just don't think it went nearly far enough. I wouldn't be opposed to a proper steam-punk tomorrow, but they need to fully commit. The one time I actually rode Rocket rods, it was kinda fun.... just broken all the time

You should have seen Pizza Planet at Disneyland Paris. It was shoe horned in in the back of Discovery land (next to EO/HISTA/Philharmagic) in a TENT just outside of the berm.
It was a noisy and smelly quickservice restaurant that was too hot in summer and too cold during winters and the food was beyond bad. No upkeep since opening so it got worse and worse to the point where it would constantly smell like old diapers. In the end it was more closed than open and looked like a post apocalyptic toy take over.

It's possible that it will be better. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I will note that Circle-Vision 360° was actually a ton of fun. Also, Inner Space was a blast too. But, you're right, if they brought back Carousel of Progress, I would pass out. You did leave out 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, which was replaced by Inner Space. Thanks for the fun.

A "reskin" is when the ride mechanics remains the same, but only the theming is changed. So, Splash Mtn is undergoing a retheme. But Star Tours is NOT a reskin of Adventures though Innerspace. It's an entirely new ride. Same for Big Thunder Mtn RR.

Although I've never gotten to experience these past attractions, I do know about them. I would've included the Peoplemover, Skyway To Fantasyland/Tomorrowland, and Country Bear Jamboree as those were huge pieces of Disneyland history. Being born in the 90's and still going to Disneyland as an adult, it's really interesting how much the park has changed in these generations.

Nemo's Submarine Voyage is an apt reskin that saved a doomed attraction that might as well be on the California Historical Society's front page. It's cute and relevant and attracts younger guests to the ride where the original wasn't appealing at all to those under the age of 40 (with me being the exception apparently). But David is right, the original was a classic that used way more practical effects and had a quaint charm that I really miss from growing up in the 80s and 90s.
I saw the Submarine Voyage off on it's final voyages Labor Day weekend in 1998 with a total of 12 times having ridden it that day and having to stop only because of a thunder storm warning. RIP.

I for one, was not a fan of the movie, so I already am looking at it negatively. I will give it a chance, but there is no way it will every be better than Splash Mountain, at least in my mind. Time will tell. Thanks for the great video! Hope to see you at the park again soon!

I loved CircleVision and Adventures Through Inner Space. I agree tho that buzz was a positive re-skin. But for me personally, as a child the wonderment of shrinking and traveling thru “inner space” was amazing.
