A consulate is a souvereign piece of real estate in a other country, attacking the consulate in Damascus is the same as attacking Iran directly. Israël gave Iran no choice other than retalliate, it did so without informing the US before the strike and the US did not like that 1 bit. Israël risked US strategic interests without asking, if Iran would have seen this as a declaration of war, the US would be dragged into a war against a serious opponent backed with nuclear capable great powers. The US would be faced with an existential threat and a war wich it can't simply pull out.
The whole interview is a classic case of "this is what I believe" versus "but that's not the reality, son".

Difference is that Kuwait has vast oil reserves and Ukraine doesn’t. Also, Saddam asked the US what their position was on his siphoning oil under the desert of Kuwait and was told that the US had no issue against it.
We basically suckered him into doing it so then falsely claim it was an invasion, plus the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador came to Congress and lied her little ass off about Iraqi soldiers dumping babies out of incubators in a Kuwait hospital, which never happened. This ruse was used just like the lies about WMDs in Iraq to justify our war there.
The US doesn't care about babies, or countries being invaded. It only cafés about US strategic interests. Kuwaiti oil was a US strategic interest and a regime change of Iraq also was a strategic interest. Iraq didn't present a military challenge for the US nor did they have a means of hitting the US homeland. When the US goes to war against a country like Russia it only does so if the US faces a threat to its existence. The Cuban missile crisis was a threat of that proportion. Nuclear missiles that close to the US homeland gave the US to little time to respond in case of launch, the US was willing to go to war over that against the USSR even if that meant being struck with nuclear weapons. The Ukraine issue is the same situation for Russia, it will go to war against the US even risk nuclear war if needed. The US won't risk nuclear war as Ukraine is not a strategic interest for the US.
This is why the media often blacklists guests, so lets give Piers some credit for giving Mearsheimer an oppertunity whereas the BBC probably blacklisted him. Funfact, the BBC newsnight booked Jeffery Sachs by mistake and he destroyed their narrative.

On an entirely smaller scale: As a soldier for the US Army, and a contractor after my so called honorable service, this interview brightly illustrates how we see the so called oppressed and those forced to cooperate.
The collective thought: If you’re with us, no matter the reason, then you’ll be ok.
I had arguments with other service members about laundry services. Again, it is minuscule, but important. The TCNs (3rd Country Nationals) were treated like crap.
The arguments were directed at some of the other US service members and their discontent with TCN that provided those services.
Most assumed that those providing services for all of us, should be lucky, and that they should be happy, and that they were making more money than they’d would ever make.

I think the issue here is that Professor John Mearsheimer is analyzing the situation and explains how he thinks the different parties will react strategically in the different possible situations, while Piers Morgan just says what he hopes happens in the different situations..
For example, Professor John Mearsheimer says that if Russia starts losing the war then he thinks that they will use nuclear weapons and he doesn't think that NATO will respond with nuclear weapons because it is not in their interest. He doesn't say that that's what he wishes or want to happen, he just says that that's how he think it will play out. Piers Morgans response is "but you seem to think that Russia is infallible". I literally felt second hand embarrassment for Piers...

Just the notion that the US would retaliate to Russia if it went nuclear on Ukraine is peak ignorance: but it is useful for the many who don't know.
