Air Rifle Hunting, Wood Pigeon Decoying Over Stubble, 7 Sept 2010

- Thought i'd do something different for a change and try and shoot some woodpigeons over some stubble fields, but things just didn't go as plained. It was a very gusty day making it hard to make clean head shots plus the buzzards were spooking the pigeons on and off, and to top it all off it rained hard and everything got soaked, me included.

Well i guess you can say good by to your dinner Dave, lol, Cheers
Thanks for doing these video's. I love your relaxed way of describing what you are doing wish some great shooting and it's also good that you show some of your misses... we all have them. Keep posting the films please, they are well worth watching.
you really dont understand how much i love your videos please please please dont stop making them
By far the best Air rifle footage and advice on youtube! Thanks and I look forward to some more instalments :)
Very good video, enjoyed it very much. I have just bought my first air rifle and started hunting, gained some good tip from your vid.
Great video as usual. That "racing bird" or "Rock dove" as you call it is a Feral Pigeon in Texas, and considered a pest. I shoot them primarily with 1 of 2 .177 caliber springers I own. Both are great at dispatching those birds. I am saving my money and hopefully some time next year I will have my Theoben. HOPEFULLY. Again, Great Vid, Awesome footage, and Good hunting. -Mark
Best hunter on TH-cam! Love your commentary, keep up the good work!
Loving the Buzzard footage. Very rare birds here.
Great Shooting and a great Video 5/5 and a Favorite.
Tamryn
Yeah.. or the big biig herd of jackdaws raiding the villages around. We had(and still have) a herd with over 1000 individuals.. in our cold barn for the livestock, they literally lived there, I have probably pulled of 30-40 birds before they realised they are not welcome into the barn anymore, and now they do dont infest the barn anymore, but they will probably when the snow is coming, more hoppy for me. Thats why I bought myself an air rifle in the first place :P Then, pure interest took over!
What a cool video, not only did you rid a few pests, but you gave a free meal to a couple of majestic birds of prey, nature doing what it does best, with some help from a keen airgunner.
Great videos man.
Over here in the US, we call those "mourning doves" because some people thought they sounded like they are crying.
They're good meat too. =)
I like the way you try for a clean shot every time.
Hey, Hello from Ohio. Just wanted to say I like your videos. The calm commentary and the shots are great! And your accent is cool lol. Keep em coming!
I think your videos are the best on youtube.
and again you made a GREAT video.... i hope you never stop hunting!!
Looks like the cats went hungry that day lol. Another great video.
nice video and very interesting, especially good clean headshoots and those two buzzards are cool!
It's cool to see other wildlife when out and about hunting, whether they are legal game or not. Nothing beats the out of doors. Happy hunting friend.
Superb vid! Fantastic footage of those buzzards.
Great shooting - keep em coming!
I've been thinking about feeding the pigeons with pea's wheat and maybe some sea salt. I heard they love it.. worth a try.. but should I use 2 plastic decoys when I'm going to hunt at the feeding place or not, to call them in? I will definitely give it some time to see if the pigeons will find the food in the first place before hunting.. they should be pretty interested as the winter approaches.
you make the best hunting vids on youtube!
Hey just wanted to say awesome channel great filming and superb narrating. Keep up the good shots man!
What a great vid mate, really enjoyed watching this and for me a great sight to see the buzzard as i have never had one land anywhere near me,some very good footage and great shots :)
@dmrrider3 Thanks very much for the nice comment. And yes i've thought about a DVD, even put together about two hours of footage for one, but haven't done anything more with it.
a real bonus seeing the buzzard come down like that
@AirRifleHunterReview Thank you glad you liked it.
Great vid HV, shame about the buzzard spoiling your fun, but atleast it was something to watch, sometime's it's nice to watch wildlife do it's thing.
Keep up the good work
Cheer's, Rob.
@granv1l Thank you very much for such a nice comment. I've got the experience cause i've been hunting with airguns for 23 years, and i have a few family members who are farmers, where i started to shoot then got more places to shoot as i gained more experience over the years.
Good point! I assume I'll just stick to food only, let them be eating there for a week or so... take a look and see if any birds has been there, just to be sure they know where the food station is!
@davo022 Thanks, glad you enjoyed the vid, and there is plenty of pigeons rabbits and magpies that do a runner before i even get the cammera on them never mind getting lead in the air.
@whirlywizz Thank you very much, i must remember that. Glad you enjoyed the videos.
@mrmactknife Thank you very much, glad that you enjoyed the vid so much.
just watch all your videos mate and I gotta say I really enjoyed them good shoting keep them coming also I've subscribed so I won't miss any new ones
damn buzzard getting a easy meal off your hard work and waiting for the pigieons to come in! lol damn things
@MrNigelcarpenter Even though seeing these birds usually means the end of a days decoying, being so close to something wild like this does put a smile on your face. Thanks for the nice comment.
Hellow huntersVermin, first I am sorry because i do not speak neither write in english. I am spanish and only know a bit of english learned in the school. This is the first time I write in english. Sorry. Only want thanks you for your videos. Very very good videos. I never saw none amateur videos as good as your videos. The next step may be use lived decoy; I usually hunt with lived magpie and woodpigeon us decoy and the are very much efectived than electronics or plastic.
nice vid mate loved the wild buzzards nice one john :-)
@DeadmanXX08 Thanks, glad you liked the video.
i have to say! i like all of your videos!
u make the best videos on youtube
@HuntersVermin i could watch u all day great videeos
@customtuned Thanks, i dont mind the wind if it stays constent, then i can alow for it but i hate it when its gusty like that. Good luck on the weekend.
@lightpoacher Thanks glad you liked it.
@MasterMark915 Hi ya, not sure what it was, but since we'er not allowed to shoot ether rock doves or racing pigeons here in the UK i left it alone. Even though it probably was a feral pigeon and ok to shoot here too. Good luck with the Theoben, they are a great rifle.
@TEELSI Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
The Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a medium to Large bird of prey, whose range covers most of Europe and extends into Asia. It is usually resident all year, except in the coldest parts of its range, and in the case of one subspecies. In the US called a Hawk.
@TamrynRimfire They are quite common around here now a days, thanks for the comment and the 5.
Thanks for the other answear on the other video..... that was what i was looking for.
@waynemufc1 10-15 years ago you wouldn't have seen anything like this in Northern Ireland, but as last few years the Buzzards have been getting a very common sight.
@TelfordSniperKid Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
@jakemcdonald97 Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the vid.
@delbert963 Thank you very much, glad you liked it.
@CynicVids Thanks, glad you liked it.
Great video as always, can't wait to see the HW97 in action against some bunnies.
@46FreddieMercury91 I really think it depends on what you are hunting and where as it is movement and sound that animals pick up on as walking into the wind can help stop animals from smelling you. Look at the hunting cloths that they use in Europe they are mostly all a dark green as this works well in dark woods. Camo helps break up your out line but if you move about too much or stand out in the open away from any cover it won't matter how good or expensive your camo is.
@britelite2657 Thanks, glad you liked it.
@ARCEYE78 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
@gizliliman1 Your welcome, glad you liked it.
@bigjohntightlips Thanks glad you enjoyed it.
@photoguy2910 Thank you very much for such a nice comment.
@sercout Not much except get out of the hide and politely tell the scure to fog off. Thanks for the comment.
@Wicho023 It was a Common Buzzard which are getting quit common here in Northern Ireland, but are protected by law.
@thomaselgarsmith No i don't mind, and thanks for the nice comment.
@thelawnguys93 Thank you and glad you've enjoyed them all, bar that one.
@CallawayERC Hi ya, it took two goes but i finally got them on maybe 10 years ago after i told them that i needed a lower powered air rifle to safely use in and around farm buildings, plus a high powered one for rabbit control in open fields out to 60 yards or so were a rimfire might be too dangerous. Glad you enjoyed the vids.
@joel5086 Thanks, glad you liked it.
Thanks glad you liked them.
There's also the jackdaw but if you go to the BASC website and look up air rifles in the Codes of practice and you should find a link to help tell you what you can shoot in your area as the law can change from one part of the UK to another.
great video , i would say nerves twitching on the last pigeon
@QRichTee The first time it happened to me i was amazed as well, but after a while of it happing over and over again it does get a bit annoying. thanks for the comment.
Most hunting air rifles in the UK have about 12ft/lb of power which is good out to 35-40 yards but they are usually above the £100 mark like the Webley AGS Value Max.
awesome shooting. you are a must subscribe. starting hunting rabbot myself and theres nothing like a rush with your finger on the trigger.
@weronick100 Thanks glad you liked it.
@aaronrushton1 I've had similar happen to me with head shots that knocked the bird out, only to see it fly off a few minutes latter. Not sure why there is so many young birds, lets hope that its a good sing they bread well after such a cold start to the year. Glad you liked the vid.
@topwaterpros Usually about 40 yards in good conditions, but i did take a magpie once at 45 yards allowing about and inch for the wind with a 12ft/lb rifle.
RE;setting up your decoys, nip into your cycle repair shop they usually have loads of old wheel spokes.
great vid again mate, and a nice pair buzzards if you dont mind me saying...lol
Couldn't put it better myself, thanks for the info.
Yet another fab vid, love watching these. Do you ever get any bunny runners - the ones that get away
Keep up the good work
great shooting as usual under the circumstances, aha love the buzzards. how many did u shoot total?
@waynemufc1 Thankfully the DDT that was used was before my time, and as you say i've also seen Buzzards down in a fresh slurry field looking for worms. Something i thought was quit beneath a proud bird of pray.
@5119873 Thank you, glad you liked it.
can i have my pigeon back lol classic mate .
some great shooting there .
Ok that gun is cool and what type of pellet do u recommend for penetration or damage to one area
@almond1915 Thank you but its not a bull pup rifle but a BSA super 10 mk2 in .22cal.
a buzzard in my decoy pattern? i would have talked about it till the day i died!
how lucky some people to see that every day! fantastic vid dave and nice bull pup.
is 177 or .22?
Hi great videos very helpfull, you have prob been asked this question a few times, lol what is the best range to zero your scope at 11.5flb most say 20 yard and should have a good range without any ajustments..thnx...mark uk
"oi! can i have my pigeon back?" I lost it laughing.
@electricdixie34 Usually a zero of about 25-30 yards for .22cal and 35-40 yards for a .177cal will give you the flatest flight path but it will depend on the pellet used.
@CreamPie2310 Yes i have but some of the ground i shoot over is very small so the air rifle works best for me for now.
@Towsum True but the BSA is a bit shorter and better in the hide and i don't really need 30ft/lb to shoot birds in the head at 30-35 yards.
Things are a little different here in NI as we need a licence for any air rifle but so long as you have the written permission to shoot on a few farms it shouldn't be too hard to get a licence.
Good hunting and nice shots. the hunting fine never die.
@wavecarvage Thanks for the nice comment.
It was worth it to see a buzzard up so close and the foxes will clean up whats left any way.
@Ghostmaker1970 Thanks sir, thought i was going to blow away at one time, then the wind just died and the rain started. What a day.
@flamefinger1989 Thanks for the nice comment, and i'l try to keep uploading them.
great video, quick question do you eat what you catch? and can you eat crows the same way you eat pigeons?
@gadgetking47 Yeah its supposed to get colder this week too, good luck on your hunt.
@JuStPlAiNDaNEjA Thanks, glad you've enjoyed them.
@dahui1463 Most pellets here to buy are made of a lead and tin mix and any other non lead pellets are expensive so we don't have much choce but the ones i use are very good.
