Cut down 6 adult pines, notch cuts, with this. Heights 25-40 ft. Largest cuts 12 inch trunks. Unbelieveable. Plus once the tree is on the ground, don't have to bend over to cut it to pieces. My back is happy. Way less effort than my friends $450 (steel) chainsaw that he brought over, quieter and little safer too. For the lower parts of the trees I just made two cuts to cut them fully. One tree fell with the saw stuck in it, I bound the saw up twice (my fault impatient) motor started smoking. Still works great. I also used junk leftover oil I had in it. Best $65 saw ever.
Thanks for your video. I'm a retired lady in my 70's and I have a few trees that need to be trimmed. Calling in a pro. is expensive. So this sounds good and the price is just right.
Thanks for this review! Got this baby today for 50 bucks on sale at HFT. Even with his tallest ladder, my husband couldn't quite reach a broken/dead branch that is hanging near the house. Landscaper quoted me 50 dollars to trim one branch, but I thought I'd check out pole saw prices. Very glad I did. Now the hubs can not only trim that branch himself, but anything else he may need to trim up high in the future. Sweet. Thanks again for the video.
I also purchased one today and definitely put it to the test. I am extremely satisfied. It cut through everything I could find and the chain is still sharp! I would highly recommend wearing a helmet, glasses and gloves, I had a few close calls; all of my gear is at another location 🙄
You gave an absolute honest review!! I bought one in Fl and worked the heck out of that thing for about 3 years, cutting a little bit of every kind of tree and palm. Then I moved and gave it to a friend who loved it as much as I did!! I'm looking to find my way to another Harbor Freight where I now live to get another Portland Pole chainsaw. Love 'em.
That saw is a beast!!! Me and a buddy took down about 5 trees at least 24” in width and at least 40’ high. Had to sharpen then eventually change the blade but it’s still going strong after a few drops too.
It’s on spring Black Friday sale with no coupon needed for $49.99 now at harbor freight until Monday April 18th!! They are closed today Easter Sunday so I rushed to get it yesterday to do some work today!
I bought this cause of your review, I’m not the type that needs some high end expensive tool that puts out 900 hp or some bs. Because they are good tools that’s cheaper and do one hell of a job like this one. I cut up some serious branches with it and it sliced thru like butter. Thank you for the review.
MadSounds, great to hear. Agree with you, the right tool and the right price works for me. And this one as you've mentioned is a champ. HFT comes through again...
My man... You're not lying. The Craftsman pole saw I bought was not only crazy heavy (and an actual hand held chainsaw with an adapter to put it on a pole) but it was also DOA out of the box. Took it back to Ace Hardware and they couldn't get it running either. I got refunded and drove straight to HF (I saw your video while I was troubleshooting the Craftsman) and bought this model. Got it home, put it together and two hours of work later I'm all done for the season. Cut some 10" limbs with it. There were NO problems other than my sloppy cutting techniques. This is an AWESOME piece of hardware for the price and would be at double the price. Thank you! Liked, subscribed...
yes 10 inch limbs nice. I cut 6 adult pine trees down with this cheap $60 saw, heights 25-40ft. Largest cuts 12 inch" (make two cuts opposite each other) Best $65 ever spent. Better than my friends $450 18" chainsaw in (almost) every way for my needs.
Thanks Craig, feedback I've gotten from others who have watched this video tends to be overwhelmingly positive for the pole saw. I continue to be very pleased with this purchase.
This is super helpful to show how to use this type of tool in general, and really appreciating your safety tips in referencing the user guide as the final word.
I bought one on last Black Friday for $50. I just put them together and watch your video to make sure everything are right before adding the oil and trying it.
Great video. I've had one for years and need to get it out to do some trimming as soon as it stops raining every since day here in Florida. Also, I read that it's a good idea to soak your chain in chain oil for about 24 hours before using it.
I bought one. Paid for itself on day one. This saw is great. I am having a problem with it staying extended. Locking mechanism doesn’t seem to be holding all that well. It isn’t a big deal right now I just have to keep extending it and relocking. If it gets any worse I’ll put a hose clamp on it or some other type of clamp to hold it. Other than that I love this saw.
Blaise, glad to hear you like your's I also use mine a lot. The hose clamp would be a great more permenant solution. I would think several loops of electrical or 1 inch duct tape would also help keep it in place and may be easier to adjust on the fly.
I have had mine for about 8 years i think and use it every year. I have cut up so many limbs and small trees. Just had to get a new chain for it and still going strong.
Bought one couple years ago in an emergency and it worked amazing. Still use it to this day with no issues. One of the best purchases i made at Harbor Freight.
I purchased this same pole saw today in Rosenberg TX... great price $49.95 plus tax. Got it home and easily assembled it for use. It cuts great... but there is an important thing I feel you left out. It is anything but "well balanced" as you described it. At least 75% of its weight is on the blade/chain end of the pole. Fully extended, this saw becomes a beast to lift and is very difficult to use when reaching upward and outward at a 45-60 degree angle. The only way it is manageable is when pole is nearly vertical, directly overhead. When retracted to its shortest length, I would say it is pretty easy to use, but not when fully extended.... I would have loved to have seen you actually using it full length. Then again, you do look like a pretty strong guy and that is what it takes to use this pole saw....
Interesting point, not sure how they could have balanced it any better than they did, I guess my expections were a bit different. Thanks for sharing your POV, always appreciated.
I love my Kobalt Pole Saw - 80-volt - 5ah battery - 10" Bar - 6 ft / 8ft foot Pole Saw. I have been using it for more than 3 years now. It works great on my southeast Louisiana farm clearing property that a hurricane went through and trashed all the trees in the woods of our 20-acre farm. Today I'll be cutting a 6-inch limb off of a tree out front.
Thanks for this video. I actually bought this saw from H.F. a few years ago when it went on sale for $49.00, but I’ve never actually needed it until now.

Just bought one today for 44 bucks on sale. Looks pretty good. I'll find out tomorrow. That was several weeks ago. It really works great. Well worth the cost. Be sure to buy chain oil and soak it overnight if possible. If not soak it as long as possible.

I have the same one and the same chain saw and love how both perform. My problem is both leak bar oil when storing. Anyone have recommendation on how to not have them leaking? thanks
I got one after a thunderstorm. The saw at the end of the pole is heavy, but that made it easier to cut the limbs. The black comfort rubber on the long pole tore off within three days. Otherwise, I love it and recommend it to everyone, even though the price is low.
I used my HFT polesaw just today. Took down an 8” circumference cedar tree to the ground plus very hard live oak branches. Unfortunately my chain is a little dull even though I hand sharpened it earlier. I miss my old Remington 10” corded polesaw that I beat the snot out of. I guess they are no longer being made. worx looks very similar to it. But now they have engineered some fancy auto adjusting chain tensioner. Reviewers are giving it bad reviews because it loosens up making the chain slip off. My HFT saw never failed me today!
I'm picking one up tomorrow and it'll save my butt big time from not climbing up high with a normal chain saw like I was planning on. $54.00 on sale at a tent sale this weekend, a whole lot cheaper than an ER visit or a cremation, lol.
Mine is a lemon. The chain will not stay on no matter what I do, and I think the adjustments are difficult without three hands to hold everything in place.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow Spring like day here today so had a perfect day to test it out. Very impressed and it works great and will get a 5 star rating from me. Was able to reach limbs without a ladder and was able to trim thick brush near the ground that I could not easily reach. Was really a great buy and am very pleased with it. One note though...instructions call for SAE30 oil for the chain lube instead of regular bar and chain oil. I may contact them and ask if bar and chain oil is OK to use in it.
Soak chain in chain oil overnight. Check reservoir every ten minutes and fill accordingly. Sister just got me one and you make look easy and fun. Good a ladder wasn't used. Company recommended not to use a ladder which was a concern for me.
moms4ourkids, great suggestions. I got a hand chainsaw I plan to test out this week on branches that are 25-30 ft up, should be intersting. Stay tuned.

@Make It or Break It thanks for the response! It worked great. Mainly just purchased for some light duty trimming of 1" to 2" diameter branches of a few medium sized trees in the backyard to keep away from the power line! Worked like a charm :)
@@MakeItorBreakItNow I read reviews of all the battery operated pole saws. There were issues with almost all of them, but every review of the Portland mentions no issues. So I spent my money on 150' of 12 gauge extension cord which I had determined that I needed to reach all of my trees from the electrical outlets. I've soaked the chain in bar oil and am now ready to assemble the saw and go to work.
Lawn guy wanted $500 to trim up two of my trees. I ended up buying this for $50 (black friday sale) and trimmed it myself, easy. Saved $450 and have a saw for next time.
I've had mine for about 3 years now. I paid $56 for it. I've said many times it's the best $56 I've ever spent. I'm the blades don't last very long understand they are from China and so what I do instead of trying to sharpen them I just purchase another one for about 12 bucks on Amazon.
Thanks for this review. They are $70.00 now and they no longer honor their 20% off coupon now either. Bummer. It does seem to be a decent saw compared to the others in this price range though. Way cheaper than hiring tree trimming services for sure.
Geemail mailbox, the pole saw is definitely worth the price as is my electric chainsaw here: th-cam.com/video/Mn1t48d_0rg/w-d-xo.html Thanks again for your comments, much appreciated.
I don't even know why Harbor Freight has discount coupons. They're not applicable to any of the big ticket items anymore. It used to be awesome. Now they're all but pointless 🤦♂️
I bought one long ago, it worked great, couldn't find a spare chain to buy for it though so had to always get it sharpened and it was out of commission while that was happening. It worked well and held up pretty good. Definitely is not as handy as a pole saw with a battery so would not buy this type again.
Just got one, haven’t used it yet, ( I am pre soaking the chain for 24 hours ) but I am more excited about it now that I watched this video and see it in action. I was concerned that it would be made cheaply like a hand chainsaw that I bought from a company that rhymes with twirks. I am hoping that this thing will be long lasting.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow I just used mine a little bit for the first time yesterday, seems to work pretty well so far. Glad to hear that yours has lasted a few years so far, hopefully mine will as well , I am only using it for light trimming and not sawing off large limbs or anything.

I guess they are no longer being made. worx looks very similar to it. But now they have engineered some fancy auto adjusting chain tensioner. Reviewers are giving it bad reviews because it loosens up making the chain slip off. My HFT saw never failed me today!
totally agree, my HFT pole is still going strong.
Good review. Thank you.
Greg Lees, glad you liked it thanks for your comment.
Thanks 🙏 for video!!! Good review friend
you are quite welcome friend. Thanks for the kind comment.
Thanks for the demo
Sean, you're welcome. The pole saw is still going strong since the video.
You made it look easy. Thank you
Maria, You're welcome! its also a lot of fun.
Awesome review
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I'm picking one up tomorrow and it'll save my butt big time from not climbing up high with a normal chain saw like I was planning on. $54.00 on sale at a tent sale this weekend, a whole lot cheaper than an ER visit or a cremation, lol.
Agreed, this pole saw is much cheaper than rolling the dice against gravity.
Thank you for sharing
You're welcome. Thanks for leaving a comment.
I dont have one but I will tomorrow. thanks!
Let me know how this polesaw works out for you.
I had to cut all the tree branches over my house and garage before having a new roof installed. It cut though 6"+ limbs like hot knife through butter.
DronePilot Flyby, glad to hear this pole saw worked for you. Thanks for sharing.
Should put bar on without chain, fill with oil and run till oiler lubes bar. Then put chain on,(preferably with some oil on it), then carry on.
thanks for the suggestion, will have to give your method a try.
Got one and I love it!!!!
Ronnie, great to hear. Thanks for sharing.
$49 bucks right now. Moving into our new house today on a preserve. I am buying this thing TODAY 😊
Tanja, sound like you got a great deal. Let me know what you think.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow it works great.
Thank you on my way to buy one! Wish me luck cutting branches lol
Griselda, best of luck. Make sure to always kep things safe.
You can reach up to 6 or 7 what are you like 3 ft tall?
I'm a little taller than 3 ft...
Did this come with the chain oil?
Yes, a small bottle, but if you going to do a good bit of cutting, you'll need to buy more oil.
Mine is a lemon. The chain will not stay on no matter what I do, and I think the adjustments are difficult without three hands to hold everything in place.
Bob, sorry to hear, ideally you'll be able to return it. HFT is usally ggood about taking things back within 90 days.
Thank you
You're welcome
Bought one today. Can't wait to try it out. Was $60 with coupon discount.
Michael, you got a good deal, well worth that price to me. Let me know what you think.
Yes, very happy with the deal but should've gotten it back in December when the coupon had it down to $49.95! Waiting for a decent day to try it out.
Can you share the link where to buy? I can't seem to find it. Thanks
Do they have replacement chain
Yes, you can buy them online. I've seen them on Amazon.
I just got a new chain at tractor supply for $15 for a 8 inch.
Thank you.
Mena, you're welcome. Are you going to get one?
I have the 6.5 amp. Does anyone know what size chain is needed for replacement
Kristina, here's one I found on Amazon that should work, just make sure to verify the model numbers.
Stay tuned.
What kind of oil???? Motor oil...or different???
@@IAmJustSaying6 chain and blade oil. Big box store. Doesnt have to be over price brand. Under 6$ pint.
Clearly written on container. Please don't use anything other than recommending
@@IAmJustSaying6 here's what I got. amzn.to/3bmv7UU
Is it normal to see oil on the chain itself?
painkiller08, some oil is normal, particularly at the beginning. But the oil shouldn't be spraying out...
Got mine with a $49.99 coupon after my old one broke. Seems decent.
I just got three replacement chains on Amazon, to keep this saw going strong, here's a link if you're interested: amzn.to/4d2Yeri
She loves her oil like a sailor love his rum I keep a little oil can on me and check it every 10 mins other than that it's a little work horse.
Great suggestion and poetic at the same time. Thanks for the unique comment.
Got mine today for 54.95
They were on sale for 21% off from 70 bucks in store or on their website right now through 9/25/22.
You got a great deal. Congrats. How did it work for you?
@Make It or Break It thanks for the response! It worked great. Mainly just purchased for some light duty trimming of 1" to 2" diameter branches of a few medium sized trees in the backyard to keep away from the power line! Worked like a charm :)
@@TheLwaller09 Great to hear, thanks for the follow up. Will be pulling mine out this weekend for some trimming.
perfect for the zombie apocalypse
maybe, unless there's no power...
My trees are spread out. I'd need a 100' extension cord to use this. That's the advantage of a battery operated pole saw.
Makes sense. 100' is a lot of extension cord!
Rick, I'm with yeah. Hope you enjoyed the extra $450 on something fun. Love Texas BTW...
I've had mine for about 3 years now. I paid $56 for it. I've said many times it's the best $56 I've ever spent. I'm the blades don't last very long understand they are from China and so what I do instead of trying to sharpen them I just purchase another one for about 12 bucks on Amazon.
Paul, thanks for the tip on the blades, it certainly appreciate the time vs cost tradeoff for many folks.
Thanks for the recommendation. I will pick one up tomorrow .
@@JuanGomez-fo5rk I really think its a good buy. Much better than taking a chainsaw up in a tree...Thanks for your comment.
I have had mine for 2 years and love it
I don't even know why Harbor Freight has discount coupons. They're not applicable to any of the big ticket items anymore. It used to be awesome. Now they're all but pointless 🤦♂️
Still using the one I bought in 2016. 😉👌
glad to hear. Mine too has been going strong since the video.
For some reason this comment got me excited to use mine now
@Juan Armando Olvera Cabello
Make sure the chain is tight, and you'll be good to go. I used Stihl Platinum bar and chain oil.
I have one too.
Joe, do you like yours?
By the way M-I-O-B-I: I used your video to assemble....and used the saw. Thanks.
Cal Ven, thanks for spelling it out for me. Words can be hard sometimes...
Wife got 1 she loves it
Victor, thanks for sharing, agree, this chainsaw still works great.
Just got one for $20 a friend found it and sold it to me for that
wow, quite the deal. You've got a winner.
they should always come with a small bottle of oil.
I think mine did. But the oil and replacement chains are fairly cheap, and really keep this saw going...
They’re like $50 right now at H.F
Johnny, thanks for sharing. That's a great deal.
👍😎
Thanks. Always like the shades emoji.
My HF pole saw leaks oil all over the place. I am going to run it into the ground and can't beat the price
Interesting, and sorry to hear. Mine so far doesn't have a leaking problem.
I mute and look away when lousy ads come on. You should too!
Cal, thanks for the tip, will do. Ads are a pain for sure.
@@MakeItorBreakItNow I have my tv remote too....when watching tv. I mute and look at my phone. LOL
Lost 5 live oaks to this storm in California and this bad boy cut everything I threw at it
it is really amazing what this chainsaw cab do. Thanks for sharing your experience...
I bought one long ago, it worked great, couldn't find a spare chain to buy for it though so had to always get it sharpened and it was out of commission while that was happening. It worked well and held up pretty good. Definitely is not as handy as a pole saw with a battery so would not buy this type again.
Thanks for your feedback, I'm curious about a battery pole saw, any suggestions?
Mine lasted 2 years until the motor went bad. But I figure I got my $60 worth out of it.
Scott, Harbor Freight is known for its variable quality control. But agreed I've got my $s worth out of mine and its still going strong.
So as I say, not as I do.
true...
You used it for 15 minutes and you called it reliable how the name of Bob can you come to that conclusion in 15 minutes ?
I was going to post the longer 6 hour video, but figured no one would want to watch the hole thing...
Tell me I'm wrong! You sound like and act like a safety or first aid trainer. It's prolly just me though lol.
My background includes flight testing, maybe that's what your hearing...
Horrible saw, leaks bar oil like a sieve. Nasty mess.
sidney, sorry to hear, mine works fine. When does it leak bar oil while you're using it or when its in storage?
Just got one, haven’t used it yet, ( I am pre soaking the chain for 24 hours ) but I am more excited about it now that I watched this video and see it in action. I was concerned that it would be made cheaply like a hand chainsaw that I bought from a company that rhymes with twirks. I am hoping that this thing will be long lasting.
This pole saw is still going strong 3 years later, hear's a follow on video: th-cam.com/video/PpHziv34P6o/w-d-xo.html
@@MakeItorBreakItNow I just used mine a little bit for the first time yesterday, seems to work pretty well so far. Glad to hear that yours has lasted a few years so far, hopefully mine will as well , I am only using it for light trimming and not sawing off large limbs or anything.
