I agree. And I applaud Mrs. Henry too for being a wonderful teacher and NOT discriminating against her. I feel sorry for her, she must’ve went through lots of sh!t from racist coworkers who wanted Ruby out of there.
Yeah, to me it’s better that way. Because the sad truth is, even today dominantly white schools in “privileged” neighborhoods tend to be just as shallow and incompetent, although those schools are integrated.
We also need more people like Mrs Henry. What Ruby did was brave, but Mrs Henry being brave enough to do the right thing despite the environment she was in, also takes a lot of guts. Most people in life are afraid to go against the crowd.

And are STILL dealing with on a few occasions. And it’s not just black folks. It’s pretty much anyone in this country who isn’t white/blonde/Caucasian :(
@@AlyxAestheticsneonazis and their "arian race" bullshit. That's why non-blonde white folks, especially of nations nazis thought of as "lesser" were also put in concentration camps.
My English teacher first showed me this movie, and told us the Ruby Bridges story... and discussed some history including segregation, integration of schools, and the Underground Railroad. This story is just moving and epic, the little girl's intelligence, courage, and determination pioneered a revolutionary societal change. In the full movie, Ruby begins to go to school by herself after the first couple of days of accompaniment by her mom, surrounded by security guards. She was instructed to "hold your chin up, don't look back, walk straight ahead no matter what happens... there will be two guards in front, and two in the back, we'll all walk together, you in the center, do NOT look back." And she did just that and marched on right ahead with confidence and huge strides, at 6 years old, despite all the obstacles surrounding her. She frequently asks "why doesn't God make everyone the same?" That's a question we all ask sometimes... the need of belonging. But in reality, I learned we all belong, because, "if you don't feel like you belong anywhere, that is because you belong EVERYWHERE... you belong to Him, and the whole world is His stage."
Worst part of racism is adults brainwashing negative ideas intothe minds of kids. For instance, the kid who refuse to play with Ruby…..only did that over fear of what his parents would do, not because he dislikes Ruby! I remember watching the 1998 film on Disney channel growing up. One line that stood out to me is Ms. Henry saying, “They’re children! They don’t care what color she is! It’s only their parents and ignorant people who teach them to hate”.
I teach 2nd grade and I look forward to showing this to my class. I am going to make sure I push the mute button during the crowd scene...lol. I think seeing the intense emotion in their faces without hearing their remarks will suffice. Also, I want them to see how calm and brave Ruby was during that scene. This short movie does an amazing job portraying this event in history.
When Ruby walked into the classroom and ask where is everyone liked what the teacher said, well they are still lost I think, yes lost and misguided by their parents. Barbara Henry kind teacher who did her job gracefully.
I have been a teacher and I taught white children, black children and yellow children. What a fantastic teacher Barbara Henry was and she was capable of displaying love unlike her colleagues. If you don't love children then don't be a teacher.
@@amelia8083 I taught in Asia. If the Chinese or Koreans call the English, the Germans, the Dutch, the French or the Swedish white I don't see any harm in it. I know of occasions when the Chinese have called Europeans ghosts. I know Koreans who call Europeans big noses. Those terms are racist. Calling Europeans white is not racist. If you are a teacher your focus is on preparing and delivering your lesson effectively and reflecting on it later, not on the racial identity of your pupils. Describing human beings as white, yellow or black is not racist because these terms are not derogatory. I knew a Korean woman who described herself as yellow. Calling Nelson Mandela black is not racist. Calling him the K-word is.
@@wonjubhoy Racism exists everywhere around the world but one experience does not dismiss any other experience with racism. Slurs and the like have history behind them.“Yellow” has a lot of negative history behind it mostly because of the idea of Yellow Peril (also referred to as Yellow Menace) in which East and Southeast asians were deemed a threat to the western world. An example of this would be Americans being told to not trust Japanese people during WW2 and depicting Japanese people as racist caricatures with yellow skin. It’s great that you don’t care about your students racial identity because you shouldn’t care. It’s fine that you know a Korean woman who describes herself as “yellow”. To me (keep in mind that I am also asian), I find that describing myself and other asians (in a serious, non-joking way) as “yellow” derogatory and the term “asian” is more inclusive and less demeaning. Maybe how they perceive it in Asia is different but as an Asian-American person I dislike it.
Ruby Bridges deserve this ruby Bridges is freedom because a man of the colors game what you doing what you have inside of you of their heart and body and brain
Yes! The only good thing about this experience, is that Ruby was too young to fully be aware of what was taking place. She had the innocent mind of the child. She thought the protests were b/c if some holiday and had no idea why no kids were in her class. She even said in an interview that the only thing that bothered her, was being alone in that class. Maybe that’s why she was able to walk into that school building bravely.
I’m guilty of the same thing lol. I made the mistake of NOT watching this from beg to end before choosing to show it. lol But I was pretty good about handling it in a professional manner.
The original movie is wonderful! This short however has obscene language and is not clips from the original as I had expected. I was going to show it to my class and was horrified at the language. Not appropriate for young ears--or mine!
