    1. Happy you noticed how dark OOTD is, some people missed it and just took it as a regular girlcrush kind of song. 2. I'm really glad Dreamcatcher is still taking artistic swings and isn't afraid to make polarizing choices. It's a bummer not all of the fanbase seems to want them to do that. 3. SO MUCH Handong!

What you said about OOTD is exactly what they wanted to convey. They're taking on a villain role, a narcissistic villain role. And tell you they're flawless, gorgeous, spotless, but then again you see all these editing, cuts, behind the scenes, as if saying what is on social media isn't always the same as what's behind the cam. It is creepy! I'm so glad you got its message 🥲

Yup, very similar to what i thought when i watched the MV. Like a evil group saying we are the best, we are perfect, we are the future. If you want to be the best, to be perfect like us, to be the future like us, follow us, join us, be part of us. So the Villains word fit perfectly with the lyrics and the MV too.

I will only add a quote from the review of the OOTD song:
,,In any case, ‘OOTD’ feels like a big middle finger to the industry and how they’ve constantly tried to fit Dreamcatcher in one of them. But it is no mystery that Dreamcatcher are beyond boxes and labels. They eventually always do what is true to them and stick to their roots. And that’s one thing that makes us love them even more.''

I wouldn't go so far as to say that only older fans understand it. The song and MV is tied heavily to the lore, especially the ARG around Ymenehcra. Following it really helped in understanding the concept. It's mostly people who didn't know about the ARG or didn't care about it, that are confused.

I think I count as newer (somnie since 2021,) but the lyrics got me dedicated to figuring out the lore this time, because I knew they wouldn't really be shallow like that. My current theory is that OOTD is about the crown and how it draws people in with promises of fame and beauty. And the crown is a metaphor for the music industry or something along those lines.

I’m actually surprised less people noticed the evil undertones. I felt like their delivery of the lyrics made that very obvious. They embodied aloof mean girls with their “cunty” tone and attitude. Most girl crush concepts aim to be empowering, but Dreamcatcher crossed the line over into oppression. To put it simply, “I’m better than you”.

In my point of view I see that they, on purpose made lyrics almost like narcistic prizing themselves, but in contrast music video shows that everything is edited and polished. I love that OOTD has that subtle darkness. with all the mystery stuff going around with the crown and someone searching by for the crown many of the fans just did not link it (or did not even notice that DCC created fake social media account posing the crown stuff ) and thus did not get the message and concept; they just thought DC were being arrogant and simple and such. The point is toxic narcissism, it’s a what people will do to try and get power/fame and becoming obsessed and losing themselves; becoming the “villain.” OOTD is a “girl crush” but is also a mock. Everyone looking for the status quo, trend, influencers and doing things like doing antics with cars and motorcycles, product packaging to get noticed for fame. It shows the editing and behind the scenes to show nothing is perfect. Dami’s rap is also the meaning of the song “do you feel like a monster”. It also seems like a stick it to the idol industry. It’s intentionally arrogant and such.
in the DreamChat we have two views- “Sasha” the editor that is kind of interested and Yamacha (sp?) who is obsessed “the power of the crown”. Enter mixed with all the “real/fake” stuff that the girls are showing.
That aside the girls look amazing. Handong, Siyeon, Yooh, Jiu. Siyeon and the Mustang are my background because I love my Wolfie and a ponycar.
Rising is probably my favorite of the b-sides. It’s rock and the message is a “over come type of feeling”. Siyeon’s low tone and high notes.. Siyeon always kills the vocals. I love when Handong and JiU get to go into low tone.
Shatter is also really good, a friend equated it to a more aggressive Poison Love lyrically. The song also has to do with Madusa. “I think I turned into the stone” or “turned into the - “ because they turned into a stone and could not finish talking.
We are Young is good to.. I probably like it more than other Insomnia, but it’s not my favorite b-side. The verses are great and the chorus does kind of let down by not going full EDM.
Yes we do! I was saying on other channels that we need to killing voice with DreamCatcher. With their vocals, Dami and Gahyeon and SuA rap skills, and their various genres with mixed rock songs and other genre songs there would be so much to choose. They would kill it just like Mamamoo and Red Velvet.

“A villain is greedy and tends to not care about what others think, and it’s the same with your outfit,” JiU said during a showcase held on Wednesday at Konkuk University's Millennium Hall in eastern Seoul to celebrate the release of the new album.
The lead track “OOTD” is a pop punk track whose name derives from the popular hashtag “outfit of the day.” It centers on being “destructive and extraordinary” by being confident. The point was obviously made through the seven members’ chic outfits, as they collectively sported black leather jackets, matched with black baggy pants and white crop shirts, finished off with silver baseball caps.
“The song is about being flashy with one’s OOTD, as a personal choice,” JiU said. “You can see the villain’s confidence as well as the seven members fighting over a crown in the music video.”
Confidence is the key message of the “VersuS” series, according to Dreamcatcher. The group has been known to have deep central themes underlying its album series, such as environmental issues portrayed in the “Apocalypse” series and cyberbullying in the “Dystopia” series.
“A confident concept is something we've always wanted to do for so long,” SuA said. “We hope fans will be surprised at what we are capable of presenting to the audience.” This is what jiu said about this cb and the concept

Important to note that the music video in this case says more about the storyline than the lyrics, the members even said to pay more attention to the MV. Excited for this new trilogy they have for us now!! Gosh, I wish everyone understood it like you did that OOTD is satire and not just them flaunting their stuff... If anyone knows Dreamcatcher well, they'd know there's ALWAYS a deeper meaning behind what they do. They wouldn't just suddenly "change concepts" like what a lot of people are assuming. Great reaction once again! Totally agree with you that it's a refreshing new sound from them that was much needed. And I think the girls themselves wanted to branch out and try something new as well.

  • @jadenseph1809

When you hit the mark saying "it's dark" "it's not real". I said "yeah!!!"
People are quick to bash DC for this concept. Even some insomnia got confused. The song itself is great, it is still Dreamcatcher tbh. Everything is a lie, fake, mask. It's projection as you said. They are the pov of internet persona, celebrities, showing what they have, what they wear, what they do, what they can buy. But it's just for show. All they want is attention, pure or toxic. In the end, they are just people like you and me, living a normal life in reality.
Rising is my favorite in this album, Shatter would be the last one, WAY is 2nd, OOTD 3rd.
Like Scream, it was different, then they go back to usual in Boca and a lil bit in Odd Eye. Then Maison was different then Vision and Bon Voyage as per usual. So maybe OOTD is different, then it will come back next title, maybe?

At first glance you could think this is about them being proud and happy with themselves, about confidence. I don't think that is it though. I have no idea if my theory is correct, but the fact that the album is called VersuS VillainS makes me think it is not this simple. So I believe this song is meant as a criticism of narcissism, vanity, materialism and also (maybe) the fast fashion industry. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day" after all, maybe useless instagram influencers posting videos of their outfit of the day, which also promotes fast fashion.
The fact that fashion is moving ever faster is the most destructive industry to the planet apart from the fossil fuel industry. The Aral lake has all but disappeared because of the cotton industry for example. It would fit to the Villain image, and you can see in the MV that they are acting. It is shown in the scene where Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting, but then the camera is off and Handong helps Yoohyeon up.
The main reason why I don't think it is about confidence or their own success is the line "Driving on the highway, drunken everyday, do you feel like a monster?" and the album title. That just doesn't fit. And there was the ymenehcra account posting about touching a crown is dangerous and other cryptic messages before the comeback.
It could also be a big and well-hidden F*U to the Kpop industry, like the Nightmare arc probably was. The narcissism and materialism is definitely criticized here, and Dreamcatcher have been criticized a lot themselves because of their rock/metal concept, while other groups have been celebrated for using a guitar riff once in a song. And Handong standing in front of the camera with bruises all over her legs seems to be a comment on the merciless industry as well.
The music is highly interesting as well. There still is rock there, but dialed back. The song structure is not what you'd expect at all, for me it is punk rock meets K-Pop. Not their usual spiel, but a very good progression. It takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it.

I agree. The video seems pretty clearly about how artificial the content is, but the lyrics also point toward that idea (especially the way Dami’s section is so much darker and the “Shall we start this game?”, “Ready, action!” part). It can be easy to miss on the first listen because so many songs have lyrics very similar to the first verse and the chorus, and they don’t start getting over-the-top until the very end (“I’m gorgeous, I’m spotless, I’m priceless”), so I can see how people might not catch on right away.

"Sinful" is a word that comes mind for OOTD after hearing you comment that the vibe feels a little bit dark and that something seems off, especially with the instrumental feel trance-like and trying to get me sucked into something that seems dangerously alluring and the end of Dami's verse asking, "Do you feel like a monster?"
In terms of theories, "delusion of grandeur" is one that I always end up coming back to when I revisit this MV and song. There's the line in the chorus "Look at my necklace // Wearing my black dress" despite them not having either of these things on their persons. Yet the choreography seems to imply that they either think that they indeed have these things or are trying to convince you of it.

Unfortunately I kind of doubt that dreamcatcher will get to be on killing voice, even though they're more than capable imo. idk it just kinda seems like dreamcatcher never gets to be included in the more popular variety content like killing voice, knowing bros or really anything that's bigger than weekly idol. I've been waiting for Sua's chance to be on studio choom's artist of the month but again it's kind of doubtful that she'll ever get that opportunity.
I'd love to be wrong on this but it just seems like they don't get noticed by the "higher tier" of variety content. One thing that they've been consistently going on with each comeback is the "it's live band version" thing, which is always nice to see.
Edit: just some of my "quick" thoughts, OOTD was pretty different for dreamcatcher and I love that they're not afraid to do something completely new for them in their title tracks, I think the concept is kind of an over the top version of the girl crush "look at us we're so pretty and amazing" type of songs, almost mocking it in some ways and showing us how fake a lot of the industry is (for example handong and yoohyeon seemingly fighting but immediately being besties after the scene is called, all of the editing, jiu being inside some sort of barbie doll packaging etc.). Rising is more of that classic dreamcatcher sound from the nightmare era, it's not my favourite of those style of songs from them but I loved handong and sua's vocals a lot there, you can really see how far both of them have come vocally. I'm still not sold on shatter but I really like how different it is from pretty much everything else they've ever done. We are young is a club banger, I don't really like it but I can see it being a lot of fun at concert like you said, it's giving european edm festival vibes.

  • @jiedragonhub
    @jiedragonhub 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

To explain it simply, the 2 part series is called "Versus". This comeback is Villains (the first part), which is about Narcissism and being all high and overly confident and DC played that role of being the bad guys, given that the album is called "Villains". Some of us expect the 2nd part of the series to be "Heroes", which is the total opposite of OOTDs concept. The members teased us that the next series will have "good moral lesson". There's more to the lore specially the ARG thing they've been doing. Basically they've been luring people to wear the "crown" but at then end, they're just sacrifice until they reach the quota of 100. The victim in the MV is the 99th, and the person who is doing graphic design was supposed to be the 100th victim.

As one of the (few) people who likes We Are Young for itself, not just as potential fun concert song - I think the lyrics are more wistful and there is a little more edge to the song then first appears. Maybe the "we are young" refrain is more about a state of mind in the face of disappointment, setbacks, and pain. Also, maybe there is a hint of desperation.(Except for Gahyeon).

  • @InsomniSuA

A theory that I quite literally just made up continues with what other Somnies are saying, in the sense that the song is almost satire like, especially because we know that Dreamcatcher are not the type of girls to suddenly change like this. We see them singing about flexing rollies, cash, and necklaces, just as it’s portrayed on social media, nowadays we see too many people showing off what they have becoming too greedy. Some also stage and fake everything, just as the scene with Handong and Yoohyeon. In all I think this song and MV is a type of mockery. Now thinking about the whole crown thing I think the crown can symbolize fame or social media because of the fact that we see a lot of scenes that say “follow the crown” or something else along those lines, we’ve seen how obsessive Ymenehcra is over the crown and as we know people can be obsessive over fame or obsessive of being seen as successful on social media, so ymenehcra is influencing those to follow up on the fame train adding into the whole villain concept.
Again this is just a theory that came into my head thinking about what the crown can symbolize, so if anyone else has a different theory, I’d love to hear it😂

Omg I'm so happy that you noticed the dark undertone to the MV and song!!! You took the analysis in a slightly different direction talking about AI (which I think is totally possible). My own thoughts were that it was a critique on Fake Social Media and Narcissism. But you're definitely not off cause there are so many scenes and lyrics that hint towards the dark concept!
Just one fun one I want to share since I don't see it too often:
Want to shout out @zebles200 for bringing this up: "Also in the lyrics JiU calls herself Venus and Nephthys. Venus is the Roman goddess of beauty, sex, and love, which makes sense for a song like this. Nephthys, however, is an Egyptian goddess closely associated with death, decay, darkness, and mourning. In early stories she was believed to be barren and could turn into a vulture."
Jiu's lines are a lot more ominous with that context!

I love the way Dreamcatcher’s music allowed the girls show their low registers (very rare in Kpop girlgroups)
P/s: One more thing made this comeback be more interesting: Dreamcatcher really shows that all members can rap 😂

Oh hey, I was thinking that as you really like Sua's vocals, have you checked out the video on CeCi korea channel where she sings a song from the musical Cats? There's a musical theatre actor who teaches her the right technique to sing the song and she sounds absolutely amazing there and really outdoes herself! Really recommend checking that out

I really like that you analyse the video, try to decipher the lyrics and try to ask questions to get the overall view of the MV rather than just saying "Oh! Dreamcatcher shouldn't do Girl Crush blah blah blah it's just not for me it's different" and like I cannot stop myself from calling this hypocrisy tho when G-idle,Blackpink, BabyMonster,Le-Serrafim etc etc...(No hate to these group they're amazing)does a GirlCrush and everyone like treating it like it is the second coming of Jesus when DC does it it's just "not it"? I can't help but feel there are people who still thinks Dreamcatcher is a second rate group and God forbid a second rate group to sing songs in a hip-hop swag and flex on their achievements and beauty no no no thats only for the "rich" company groups. The hypocrisy does write itself sometimes

You say it right! We don't want dreamcatcher to release another scream or boca. Dreamcatcher's genre in kpop+anything sounding rock. They've been experimenting since debut and I totally understand if some fans don't get what this song is all about.

I see OOTD as a companion piece to Odd Eye. OOTD is the hollow illusion that draws you in, only allowing glimpses of the darkness underneath it (until you catch it and it straight-up kills you, apparently 🫣), while Odd Eye is about seeing past the illusion and realizing you’ve been pursuing a lie. I don’t know if the producers did that on purpose, but the songs fit together thematically.

I found it interesting how people generally say dreamcatcher is dark and aggressive, cause of the music style. But if you listen/read lyrics, they are exactly opposite and try to help people and save the world. This is kinda first time they are aggro and even that has very different meaning.

Yes, Sir Austin. You're the first reactor that realize the dark concept behind the MV...it's a satire song, poking fun at the darker side of entertainment industry. They transform into villains n became one of them & come out with kinda narcissistic & cringy lyrics (intentionally) which is not like usual Dreamcatcher songs. we know that Dreamcatcher songs always have that deep meaning. But this one more like fun but dark.

  • @RoseForEverafter
    @RoseForEverafter 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Love that you picked up on the double meaning of the song! Yes, by itself it’s a great confidence-boosting and vibey power song, BUT it’s almost intentionally superficial, and when you watch the MV you see why. The big theme of the song is “confidence to the point of narcissism” and shows how while self-love is mostly a good thing, it can become toxic when it’s tied to material things and social media. Likewise, it shows how unhealthy it can be for people to obsess over and long for the life of an idol without acknowledging how much of that life is artificial.
But, this album is called VillainS, and that’s what our girls are portraying, which is the third layer of meaning you picked up on. These girls WANT us to desire their life, to the point of obsession. Ymenehcra, whose text and chat messages you saw throughout the MV, is one of their unfortunate victims. Dreamcatcher has actually been running an alternate reality game on Twitter since September in which ymenehcra is a character. We followed them as they had mysterious letters and knocks on their door, slowly becoming obsessed with “the crown” all the while. And now with the release of the album and more hints online-including secret messages and treasure hunts left at their showcase and cafe events-we know that ymenehcra was the girls’ 99th victim. They need one more to complete their mission and create the crown, but even once they do, only one of the seven can have it. I wonder who it’ll be.

  • @metalface_villain
    @metalface_villain 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

i definitely didn't get the message with my first listen, i was just vibing and thought it was just a self glaze song but then i realized that the album is called VillainS (or vs vlillains) and that dreamcatcher usually has something more to say in their songs so i went back to rewatch and come to the conclusion that it is actually a diss to the fakeness of social media, fashion/idol industry, consumerism etc. the ai angle is something cool i didn't consider though and it seems that it would fit in a way with the rest that i mentioned.

For me its like you said. Its like a f u to the industry where they show only what they want. Yoohyeon and handong fighting but they cut and they are friends so the fight was fake, Handong posing but only the upper body IS shown but she has bruises on her legs, jiu showing like shes an object, siyeon in a car but then its a green screen, also at the end they are wearing a cap, leather jacket and the crown and background IS shiney but then they cut and they are on a green screen and they dress basic. And finally they deactivated the camera and they dissapear. Its like a fake Dreamcatcher, maybe in the next mv they show the real Dreamcatcher 😮❤

I guess they always want anime sound like songs. They really don't repeat themselves and always blend rock with a different genre, and this time they blended it with punk. I don't know, somnias are trying really hard not to like this cb. But if they want rock, the rock sound is there, if they want creepyness, it's there. I couldn't really understand what they wanted. Of course, the song may not suit them, but they can't say nonsense like dreamcatcher is not the same dreamcatcher anymore.

I don't think that's really fair to say. Dreamcatcher's songs do *have* meaning. It's not like people are inserting themes randomly. I saw somewhere that the members mentioned the comeback was about greed. People can enjoy the music and try to understand the songs on a deeper level.
