When I think about Alexander and his life the one thing that made him great in my opinion is he was master at taking full advantage of everything given to him it really a defining quality in his character.

There wasn't really a battle to lose...and there wasn't any losing of territory. Alexander led his army to initiate a siege on Pelium. Which was surrounded by hills on the one side and a river on the other...and it was difficult to get in and out. Alexander walked into this trap. When the defenders of Pelium withdrew into the town and Illyrians took positions on the hills, Alexander realized he just walked into a trap. Then he did what no other commander would have been able to do, he walked out without losing a single man. And then he slaughtered the Illyrian army. To trap, means to make it so that the victim can't leave. If the victim leaves, then the trap is a failure. If the victim not only exits the trap without losing a single man, but also slaughters your army in its sleep two days later...I don't see any success there for the Illyrians. When I think about Alexander and his life the one thing that made him great in my opinion is he was master at taking full advantage of everything given to him it really a defining quality in his character.
"The Great" comes from the title of the kings of Persia. "Great King".
Since Cyrus, all Persian kings inherited the title Great King. To get this title you had to become ruler of Persia. When Alexander be came ruler of Persia, he got the title of Great King. Even Seleucid rulers referred to themsleves by this title in official documents.
That title evolved into "the Great".
