    I'm a tech lead with 25 years experience and can tell you the things I look for when hiring:
    1. Humility. The most important thing to me is finding someone who is fun to work with, someone who is collaborative and good at problem solving while being self-aware about areas where they want to grow and improve and being willing to share their experiences rather than use their experience to make themselves look better.
    2. Good communication.
    3. Skillset (Can you actually build things?)
    4. Degree. This is the last thing I care about. I've worked with MANY engineers, some degreed, others not and there's ultimately no difference because it comes down to the experience of the individual developer. To be honest, the engineers directly out of college with no experience have been the most arrogant and difficult to work with (generally speaking). Don't be that guy/girl.

I’ve gotten super active on LinkedIn and have started aggressively contacting recruiters. I’ve gotten more responses and opportunities in the last week than i’ve gotten all year because of this.
    Build your resume up and make it look great (format wise, dont put random styles on). And contact recruiters, gotta remember...they WANT you to get a job.

I probably talked to about 200 -300 different firms before receiving one internship offer as a software developer and now work as a data analyst.

      It's a generation problem, partially. When I was about 12, I had to replace the BIOS chip of my XT, but I got a slightly different type and required some debug instructions. This took me into the real machine that operates on binary logic. Today: "I'm a C# professional" Writes apps for a C# compatible API, with an app...
      I would prefer BASIC, if it's a inefficient multi-layer fully hardware-abstracted system anyway...

    Guys, Software Development jobs on Junior level are actually quite easy to earn, think about it , no one is expecting you to know all the things so having strong basics knowledge is all you need ! Just tell them that you are into programming hard and want to become a lot better, if they don't even consider it, then..they just didn't need a junior!

    • @Double_T_G
      @Double_T_G 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I wish this was true. The majority of job listings within my area list an entry level job as requiring 3 years of professional experience. One literally asked for 8 years of experience (I reported the listing). What they're doing is labeling a not entry level job as entry level so they can pay you less. Then no one offers genuine entry level jobs because they don't want to invest in good staff. They know that they treat genuine devs like crap so they know that if they invest in new devs they'll just be training their competition because no genuine dev will stay unless they're desperate. The only genuine entry level listing requires a 2 year contract at a crappy pay and no benefits.

    • @johnwig285
      @johnwig285 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Peter Brown an engineering degree....for a junior developer. Im sorry but u must be wasting a lot of potential candidates who studied computer science, the degree that churns out developers, to instead get graduates who are from a lesser related degree such as electrical engineering. This is a junior dev role, not an embedded systems role.

    • @Sercil00

      "no one is expecting you to know all the things"
      Ha. Hahaha. Where do you live, because I want to move there.
      Almost all job offers I see ask you to know probably every single technology, programming language, framework or whathaveyou that their entire IT department uses. It's absolutely ridiculous. Bonus points when they ask for years of work experience and still marked it as an entry level job or junior position.

      I don't agree with not lying on the resume. Lie with in reason. If you know React and don't have job exp but built projects (fyi, that look like could be for a company/client), put you freelanced for couple of years (obviously something believable). You just need to get your foot in door, this is what got me over the hurdle

  • @ItsJustRuru
    @ItsJustRuru 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The problem with learning this stuff is if you do years of a course to learn the code, then it sucks because it's almost impossible to get a job straight after finishing, you have to do projects, upon projects, upon projects, that are unique, in different code, and everything just to land one job, so after you finish your course or uni or whatever, you still have to continue doing projects for months more to land one single job. Because I can't just have on my Resume that I just finished a course or something and that is it, it will hardly get you a job.

    How I got my first software development job (from the beginning):
    1) At 12yo I got a VIC 20 for Christmas and went through the manuals that taught me how to write stuff (mostly simple games) in basic.
    2) After school I went to college and learned COBOL, Pascal, and Assembly (amongst a bunch of other computer stuff... And maths).
    3) After four years of that I got a job as a computer technician, then network specialist, then systems specialist, then senior systems UNIX specialist (to varying degrees all of these involved various type of programming as part of the job).
    4) Then I got made redundant, and the next job I got was all programming and development (using visual basic).
    So if you ask me, that's how you get a development job
    Seriously though, my point isit good to have a goal but there are many paths to do a thing. If you don't unduly restrict yourself you will probably pick up a lot of useful skills and knowledge along the way.
    Who know what I'd be doing now if I didn't get that VCI 20!?

    One interesting new hire trend I've seen recently are people, especially junior developers but also mid level ones, 'ghosting' jobs. They go through the process, get hired, show up their first day and everything seems good. A week or so later, they disappear without a word, usually because they got a bigger and better deal offer. Anyone else seen this?

    To harp on your college comment and people who must have been lying or paying someone or something: It's insane in college how many people try to skimp out of programming for group projects. I literally just graduated (well, just finished, need to wait a few weeks for the actual degree), and I'm really wet behind the ears, I don't consider myself great just yet, but I can work with a few technologies without someone showing me what to do. I might Google syntax if I don't remember something, but I actively know which direction to go in to produce at least something.
    But I swear, every group project, I was either on my own or me and one other person would do the work and we would snitch snitch snitch (because f!ck those guys, why should they get a good grade for giving me/us more work?)

    How interesting, me as third-world citizen in Argentina and studying in UBA for mechanical enginery where I used to have heavy Math analysis, Chemistry and Physics and people can take even +10 years to get a degree and later finding out how is actually in a USA top college how everybody get their degree in 4 years, their 2 first years they take whatever not-related subjects to careers even in enginery, and really light math.
    In both cases graduate people just remember 5% of what they studied, so really colleges/universities are useless in my opinion for a lot of careers.
    Something I can see it is if you have CS degree or enginery and you have a horrible portfolio or do not know how to code and at the same I have a person who is self-taught and have a great portfolio, clean code and make effort to keep learning and know more than 1 language (speaking) tells A LOT bout colleges and "professionals", you may realize to who we will hire. Looks twice or more worse if you went to college and do not know how to code or good portfolio and talks a lot times better if you are self-taught and have good code and nice portfolio.

Also I wanted to ask a question is it a big problem if im a bit shy? Will I find it harder to get a job (or go through interwievs)? should I focus on my confidence first or are skill more important?

      The reality is you're still young, you have plenty of time to build up your confidence. You'd be better to start learning the technical skills to get a position. I know plenty of developers that are incredibly shy. Confidence only gets you so far.
