    Love your very clear explanations!
    Would you consider adding a "how to give a soft catch" video to your video idea stack?

    I do almost the same as you, but I put my finger in the middle part, between the ropes.
    That way I feel it’s less likely that I would be able to hold the cam open in case of a fall.
    It’s a small difference.

    I really love my grigri and use it all the time. I've found that you don't even need to put your index finger under the catch to pay out slack though. You just have to place your thumb ontop of the cam and pull the rope through. Or at least that works with my grigri 2019 + 9.8mm mammut eternity classic that is nearing the end of its life.

    Great idea for a tutorial, been wondering about this since I bought one last summer.

    Hi, I am using a Gri Gri 2 with a Beal Karma 9.8mm rope but for the life of me I cannot stop it jamming even with my thumb over the cam and finger on side plate. I pull the rope up and the cam just locks right away. Do you think this could be due to rope type / thickness or just me not having the technique down. Its also very hard to feed slack like normal as well.

      The sickness of the rope won't help, but should be doable with some practice. Obviously haven't seen you belaying, but it could be down do the angle you're holding the GriGri at, sometimes a slight can help.

      Just a note for anyone else having the problem make sure to flake the rope out first................ Makes a massive difference and now is fine lol.

    Eventhough I have put in quite a few hours with the GriGri I still find myself preferring a good old ATC. I mostly like the amount of control you have with the ATC, especially when giving someone a dynamic catch.

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I still love an ATC. Grigris are flipping ace for their niche though, like redpointing for example.

    Just got one, sounds like a few of use have discovered the limitations of an ATC when your mate is working a route!

      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They really come in to their own redpointing stuff!

    I've just bought a GriGri, so recently that it hasn't arrived yet! However it'll be indoor use primarily so I have a little time to play with it at home before I'm at a wall. Good video though, thanks Jez!

    When I am giving out slack using the method at around 4:45 there are times that the handle will pull up and inadvertently break the rope. it is very frustrating and it happens to me when I am belaying a friend in the gym, any idea why/how I can prevent this?

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally it's to do with the angle of the grigri. Try a slight tilt to the left.

    Well,,, you made that look easy,,, Im pretty new to grigri's tbh, so far found them brilliant. quick question regarding absailing with them, i see lots of people using them on there own without anything backing them up ie prussic. I guess there supposed to cam if the worst happened and you dropped the dead rope. They seem safe so i guess maybe its down to personal preference and what your happy with. Would you be happy absaililing down a route without a prussic as a backup? cheers mate hope your well!

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do occasionally ab on one, there's not many occasions where it's suitable, but I don't use a prusik, I'm happy not to... but in a professional sense I use a Petzl Rig.

    • @DuBCraft21
      @DuBCraft21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If there is no way for you to accidentally unweight the rope, then its fairly safe, but keep in mind that the grigri is activated by rope tension, not the speed the rope is traveling through the device. So, if you unweight the rope then reweight it without your hand on the dead end, you could find yourself on the ground or at your stopper knot in the next second. Usually the weight of the rope will be enough to activate the cam though.

    And how do you deal with the kink on the rope once it gets inside the GriGri while paying out slack quickly? Pulling harder, at least for me, doesn't do the trick, because the rope remains stuck and it activates the cam. Obviously, I try to straighten out the rope upfront but sometimes, when the climber takes out a lot of rope to clip high above, the kink magically appears out of nowhere.

      It's all about getting the angle right and it works really well then :)

    I would like to know if there is a way to pay out slack fast with the Giga Jul and a 9.5 rope. My first experience was not very happy. I had a lot of shoulder pain the next days :(

  • @bas5984
    @bas5984 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you are unlocking the Break Mechanism with the thumb to give out slack. The climber would fall to the floor and the grigri wouldnt block right? or does it block because its faster, than you can give out slack? Of course the belayer should move the thumb away and hold the breaking rope. I am just curious what would happen if the belayer would freeze in this position. Ordered my GriGri yesterday after a hard decision between that and the mammut smart 2.0 x)

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the climber falls the whole device moves enough that you’d never be able to keep the cam disengaged, so the braking would kick in. This is one reason the trigger finger goes under the lip rather than grabbing the whole device.

    • @bas5984
      @bas5984 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JBMountainSkills That is very good to know! I thought that, when you explained why you dont grab the whole GriGri. Thank you very much for your super fast reply and the video! Have a great week!

    Atcs are great but afaik you can't trust them compared to devices with moving parts if you get knocked out by a rock

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ATC's are amazing and have their place for sure, but you're right they have no assisted braking feature.

    Just getting used to my pals grigri 2, have you had any experience with the grigri + with regards to paying out slack. Top vid as always jez

    • @JBMountainSkills

      Grigri + seems to pay out much the same to me. The + is a bit of a niche version.

    Very helpful, thanks. Do you have any issues with holding or pre-loading a loop of rope/extra slack between device and your right hand?

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally no, it's not something I do, but plenty of people seem to make it work safely :)

    Why are you able to put your thumb on the handle, but not the cam itself? Putting your thumb on the handle still effectively blocks the ability of the cam to engage and catch a fall.

    • @simonrobbins815
      @simonrobbins815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea is that in the case of a fall you won't be able to hold it locked open with only your index finger under the lip. www.petzl.com/NO/en/Sport/Belaying-with-the-GRIGRI?ProductName=GRIGRI
