The monarch breeding cycle and migration path was found in the same way basically by just amateur naturalists all banding together to tag and document them and report them back to a guy that was compiling all the information. So any information is important.

Rachel & Jun's Adventures! Yeah it is! In the British Isles (where I’m from), the islands are an important stop for migrating birds, but we needed to know where they were going and how many returned. So the same thing happened, they recorded the birds that arrived (by picture) and tagged them with radio collars! So know they know where these beautiful species go and if they need help and what kind of environments that needs to be reserved for the birds every year. Rachel, you should make an amateur naturalist channel! It would be so much fun!

Citizen science is always a super neat thing to participate in! Oftentimes one of the hardest things as a biologist is getting enough data for research, so the fact that people who happen to have an interest in this sort of thing can help gather that data is super cool.

haha yeah I loved that comment too xD as a little extra info on this lopic. A lot of insects like have several (most often 5) different growth stages or 'instars' before they're an adult by developing more and more everytime they molt. So if it's a juvenile or sub-adult it will really look like an adult but some details can be different. Like growing full wings is often a final 'evolution' in the metamorphosis ;) google life cycle locust for instance for some cool overviews of how they change. On top of that some locusts will change colour depending on how many there are together. If they're alone they have their solitary form and when they're swarming together they have their gregarious form :) have fun bug hunting! * nerd mode off * * flies away *

It was a horrifying experience to find a funnel web spider when I was visiting friends. One big gigantic male spider popped out and started flashing his pedapalps in an agression/fear response. We packed him into a deli cup after scooping him in with cardboard for the local hospital.
I don't know if they still have a shortage of antivenom but at the time their were concerns about an acute shortage. Unfortunately only the males are large enough for venom extraction although the females are deadly but, as implied , are too small to reasonably harvest.

I think it's SO important to understand and document animals / plant species. In the late 1800s, early 1900s people were going crazy around Christmas time, shooting & killing birds and other wildlife. Over killing and definitely making the populations decline to where people realized this was happening. Some people decided instead to have a Christmas COUNT instead of a Christmas shoot, to count all the birds they could see instead of shooting them. It started out with maybe a dozen bird watchers and there's now thousands and thousands of people counting birds during Christmas time! It's something great that all started out because one guy determined that killing all these birds is not okay. Even though you're just one raindrop, you can definitely make a difference!

    • @Leroset

I doubt they have have the time, expertise, or money to make a channel like that. They would probably make more money teaching English in Japan than they would off such a TH-cam channel. I recommend looking into things like local community college classes, meetup groups, italki, duolingo, etc. instead to expand your language skills. In middle school I found a local Japanese weekend school and went to that. There's lots of options.

I absolutely love this video! It is exactly what I do when I hang out with friends, I tend to run off because I've seen a cool invertebrate, bird or fish, snap a photo and try to identify it on my way home. If I can't identify it myself using the internet and books that I have at home, I would go to work (I also happen to work at a museum) and use some of their resources to look up what I have seen. If I can't do it alone I go talk to some of the scientists and they help me identify what I have found. They are always keen on seeing what people have found and they even recommend using iNaturalist to log finds so that data can be used in research and conservation efforts.
So another place to get organisms identified are museums, where museums (at least the ones in Australia) have an enquiries section where you can email in pictures or drop by with a specimen (dead, alive, droppings, cocoons etc.) and people like me will help identify what organisms people have found. Even wandering around the museum and looking at specimens on display have helped people identify what they have been seeing in their backyard or out on a bush walk.

The plantseeds stick to you (or animals passing by) so that they get brought to other places easily and make new plants! I love clever ways that nature works out everything 😍😍.

Awe Rachel, your repulse for bugs was turned into something beautiful. Learning more about them helped transform the bugs' strangeness into something harmless and cute. Thank you, the video had great images of all the bugs you encountered.😄

Have you ever tried Galaxy Zoo? It's a website where you can help scientists go through immages of space to help find comments, planets, and stuff! It's really cool! There also used to be one with old cencus data written in cursive, and you helped to identify dates and words that we're washed out or faded.

Thank you for sharing this site! I am also into figuring out different wildlife in my area, especially since I have moved around so much. I mostly go bird watching but I have taken pictures of the occasional weird looking bug. Plus, awesome footage of all of those insects you found.

I love inaturalist! We used it for a prairie restoration project to increase invert populations in the grass as well as aquatic inverts. Plus catching dragonflys is fun. Lol

Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm just the same, I've always been scared of bugs but found that finding out exactly what they are made me less scared. I also love taking picture of nature and wildlife but never knew what to do with the photos so I'm super excited about using the site! AND it contributes to science! Can't get much better!!

Strangely, I can completely relate to this video. When I lived in Japan, I got into insect photography and did the same thing! I'd go on walks and search around plants to take photos of them and try to ID them. I don't know a ton about insects, so I did a lot of googling and asked around on a bug club website and sometimes people could identify them. Definitely a lot of fun!
