I went on a railroad like this except it was a passenger train when I was real little,probably around six ish.I was in my Thomas and Friends phase at the time and I thought it was the coolest thing,I even got it ride a deasel!
I think the landfill op might have been more efficient if you parked the train just before the switch into the siding, pulled the boxcar between the siding switches, tied it down, retrieve the tanker, tie the tanker down in the siding, while in that position you can runaround the boxcar, spot the boxcar and the shove the tanker back to the train. When they tacked into the gondolas there was enough room to to operate the switch for a single car to move into the landfill area.
You are probably right. But actually being there, the best moves are not always readily seen. That’s what makes it fun...trying to find a better way of doing things! :)

Not my layout, but Ive had the privilege to operate on it several times now. Mainline is 5 actual miles, with a total of 8 miles of track overall, on 120+ acres.

New Source, good question! This railroad is 1/8th scale, more commonly referred to as “inch-and-a-half (to the foot)”. There is no letter designation that I’ve seen. The track gauge (for standard gauge track) is 7-1/4” between the rails. Thanks for watching!

This video is all about operating the layout like a real railroad, delivering cars to industries, and picking cars up to return to the yard. The crew running the train pics up a string of 5-6 cards along with their waybills: plastic laminated cards that indicate where the car is to be delivered. Hi, thank you for watching my video, and good question! It's not technically a yard, but yes, the tracks would each lead onto the barge. Since there is not a barge, we simply leave the cars on the three tracks.

The track is all hand laid. They purchase the rail and cut it to length, they cut their own ties and put sections of track together in the shop. After grading they lay the section of track and ballast it. Some of the cars and locomotives are kits and some people like to scratch build their own.
the engines are powered by both gas/hydraulic and electric motors ....the gas/hydraulics are just that.......they have a 5 to 16hp horizontal shaft gas engine that is then coupled to a hydraulic pump that sends pressurized hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic motors mounted on one axle of each truck then other axle)s are chain driven off of that. ...or engine is coupled to a hydrostatic transmission ...which is essentially a self contained hydraulic unit ...engine turns the input shaft of transmission then the pressurized hydraulic fluid turns the output shaft that is then connected to the axles by a right angle gear box or chain drive to a jackshaft running to gear boxes on the trucks. then there are electric locos as well that run on 12V - 24v - 36v - 48 Volt systems this usually is comprised of 2-4 large marine batteries wired in paralell with a motor controller and a couple heavy duty electric motors 2-5 hp that the axles are connected to. along with all associated wiring. these locomotives can vary in size and price...with small locos running $3 - $7000.....while the locomotive shown here will run $12 -$15000 or more new with used engines running $8 - $10,000 now then these locomotives and cars can be had ready made or partially built....depending on the supplier and what you want and just how deep your pockets are..... or you can build your own in your garage there is no real right or wrong way to build a locomotive...its yours,.... build it your way. now then yes there are true live steam engines that are owned and operated as well .....everything you see a steam locomotive crew do is done exactly same way just smaller scale ...shoveling coal feeding wood into firebox,... watching water level,... monitioring steam pressure all of it...trouble is instead of 3 man crew its a 1 man party ..the engineer....he does all 3 jobs running a live steam engine....though most have few friends that act as support crew and the steam guys are kinda tight knit group that all know each other and help each other run......now the steam locos.... as you know take very specialized knowledge that not everybody has in order to operate one ....not to mention the staggering cost...... small simple used steam loco ....can start at $15000...and go to Hell from there .......Ok how bout other end of spectrum....UP 4-8-8-4 Big Boy.....that will set you back $250,000 - $300,000 or so ...!! the track on which the train run on are specially made out of steel which is extruded just like the real track is then is assembled into 10 - 20 ft track panels on a special track building jig then carried on flat cars to end of track laid in place connected then ballasted and leveled ...switches are built same way. if you really want to know more about this scale simply search TH-cam for Train Mountain or Maricopa Live Steamers Golden Gate Live steamers Ridgecrest Live steamers Riverside Live Steamers ....or Google Live Steam train clubs for information on Locomotives for sale,... It is a hobby - just like having a model railroad set - only outside, at speed - with wind, and rain, and lights and sound. So we can live our dreams, to be the railroaders we always wanted to bew!
The ones you see here are for fun, but equipment of this size could actually be used to haul freight on, say, a hobby farm or orchard, a small commercial craft brewery or even a light-duty craftsman's forge that process their own ore.

Oh sure, it happens occasionally, though I don’t think I’ve ever seen it happen. But that’s why we attach the chains between cars...to attempt to prevent runaways in case the couplers break loose.
@@tjbuege Actually, that's a pretty good suggestion. To take it further, steel cable coated in black rubber with a custom made quick-release system instead of loop hooks would definitely look the part as well.

Hi, I'm not sure if you're asking if I do live streaming, or if I live here? The answer to both is no. This is not my model railroad, but it's one I have visited several times. I won't be doing live streaming since I believe this layout will be shutting down in the next couple years, and I won't be back to visit, unfortunately.
The time I can find, sometimes. The money? not so much. It costs more than I'll ever have. This isn't my railroad, but I've had the opportunity to visit it several times, and it's fun to operate.
