    I'll be honest, I'm on board with the kid deleting Google Classroom as a form of protest. "If devices aren't allowed in the classroom, then the classroom isn't allowed in devices," is a *great* slogan, honestly. I hope he started a local revolution.

    • @AaronJLong
      @AaronJLong ปีที่แล้ว +79

      So from what I've seen, some schools have been loaning students laptops for the school year, and after Ipads became a thing I remember hearing that schools were wanting to provide tablets to students. I think that is good, as you basically need to have some kind of tech and know how to use it to even function in today's world unless you're going to live completely off the grid. I don't understand the "no devices" rule. It kind of made sense back when a phone was just a phone. Even then you could use the program feature on a TI 83+ to type notes to smuggle in to tests that allowed calculators. I don't know what's going on in schools nowadays, but I'm not surprised that they are behind the times. I thought the Soviet Union was still a thing until the late '90s because our textbooks were that old and that's all we really had to go off of.

    My mom owns a small butcher shop, we had 20 or something reviews, all with 4 or 5 stats, then, one day, I got the notification someone reviewed us with one star, saying he's never been there, but the meat were probably rotten, the place smells and offer terrible service. I was shock and very sad, as I knew not of that was true, then I read it again... Wait... Did he said he's never been here? What?
    Then I replied to him, saying we wouldn't be considering he's review and that he should probably stop by sometime and ckeck the store for himself and THEN, making a real review.
    Now, years later, we have a very loyal costumer that looks like the guy from the review, I can't say for sure if that's really him, but I like to think that he is.

    I am 75% sure all the reviews stating 'I've never been here' comes from your phone tracking your location and asking you to review a store or business you walked passed or looked at the display windows or drove by. This happened to me a couple times in the past and I can easily see not so tech savy ppl not knowing that you can just ignore those messages and feel the need to leave a review even if they never set foot in said stores.
    A similar thing happens on amazon in the question section, where questions get sent via mail to customers who have bought the item previously. Even if they don't know the answer, they feel the need to give one because it wasn't clear that you can just ignore the message if you cannot help with the question.

    My mum really likes to talk about how she did programming in the 80s and 90s, she's extremely tech-literate, she used to get these pamphlets and hand-copy code into the computers so they would work, etc.
    She also once asked me to remind her which way the review scale went, and was one star bad or did it mean the thing was number 1.
    I still don't know what she thought the other stars meant.
    Also, this was relatively recent. 2020. She's done buckets of online shopping before.

    • @AmyEugene
      @AmyEugene ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If your mom was doing programming in the 80s then I'm assuming she's over the age of 60. I remember a few occasions when my mom was in her 60s where she made a comment or asked a question or did something that just struck me as odd, kind of like the example you gave, where it was hard to see what made her ask that question from a logical standpoint. It was really infrequent, like a year or maybe two between occasions where she did something that just struck me as odd and it was always something that I'd have a hard time explaining to someone else the reason why it seemed so odd to me. Your comment kind of reminded me of that feeling. I just want to gently encourage you to keep an eye out for moments that make you go, hmmm? in the future. If you feel like they start happening more frequently, make a note of the date when it happens to see if there's a pattern. If you ever find a good moment to bring it up with her, then take the opportunity to have a conversation about cognitive issues and find out what she would really want her loved ones to do if she started having problems. What I learned with my mom is that cognitive decline is nothing like in the movies or on tv, it can take a decade or more to become an issue that affects daily life, but before it becomes obvious that something's wrong there's years of very small, subtle changes. It might look more like they just had a bad week or month because they were sick or something else happened and they weren't paying as close of attention to their finances or their purchases or appointments, whatever the issue is, and that caused things to go off track. It's something that's not like them to do and it's never happened before, so they and everyone around them looks for a reason that makes sense to blame it on. It's not until a few years later that you look back and realize, that was actually one of the first big signs that something was going on.
      I'm sorry this is so long and I'm not trying to scare you or jump to conclusions. I've just realized that people aren't aware of the signs that we should be looking for that indicate our loved ones are starting to have trouble. When my mom's decline became obvious, I knew nothing about cognition problems or how to deal with them or what doctors could do, so I felt like I had been suddenly thrown in the deep end and was in way over my head. I don't want anyone else to feel like that, because it was awful. I wish I'd been more informed when I could've still had a meaningful discussion about it with her.

    This one was hilarious. 🤣 I have my own bad review story. I'm a published author and someone left a 2-star review on one of my books. What I write doesn't appeal to everyone, so fair enough. However, in this case it wasn't a verified purchase and based on the review the person did not read the book at all (not even the "look inside" which would have informed them of a few facts). The entire review was written specifically to misgender me (I'm a trans man), call me out for being trans, and berate me for writing a "male character from a female perspective." (Funny thing is, the main character himself is also trans, so... 🤣). I don't make it a secret that I'm trans, but the entire review was just a personal attack. It took a few months, but thankfully Amazon eventually took the review down.

      How old are these people? And was that clearly explained before buying? Just wondering. People over 40 didn't grow up with smart phones or cell phones. So a lot of seniors might not understand that. I'm pretty clueless at tech but at least I know that. If something weird happens with my phone or computer I ask my husband. :) I know seniors are frustrating but the key is to ask lots of questions even the same one asked differently. And try to help.

    • @WelcomeApathy
      @WelcomeApathy ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@felvkitties8 I don't agree with this. Phones that need to be charged have been around even before the modern cell phone. Look at wireless phones for the home that had little charger bases or car phones that had docks. These things have existed since before I was alive, and I'm almost 40. At this point, if someone doesn't know an electronic item needs to be charged to keep using it, they've been living under a rock. They also did not read the manual/instructions. That is not on the person selling the item. They shouldn't have to ask the same question in multiple ways to make sure that someone knows how to turn on or how to charge an item. There are instructions available everywhere; at the very least there are quick start guides that come with items that say "Fully charge before use" and how to turn the item on.
      I'm not saying that the store's help desk should be rude to the people who come up with dumb questions. They still need to be professional. But the people coming up with those dumb questions are still dumb for not even reading the instructions before coming to complain. You mention you ask someone before going into a store to complain. Stuck with me and it's what I always assume when someone is like "I can't do this, help me, you should know"

    The auto repair shop one reminded me of when I worked retail at Toys R Us. I worked in the electronics section and got a customer call complaining about a non-functional cell phone that she had just bought. I asked if she was sure she was calling the right store because we didn't sell those. She got angry and insisted that she had just bought a cell phone from us earlier that day. I tried to suggest that maybe she went to CAR TOYS (in the same mall as us) which DID sell cell phones at that time. This just enraged her so I told her to bring the phone back along with her receipt. I never saw her so I assume she looked at the receipt and saw that it wasn't a Toys R Us receipt, lol.

    At my old workplace, people could rate the company and us (separately) and our team manager went over our reviews with us to see what we could improve. One point was the worst and ten points were the best.
    I once got a one point review (for myself, not for the company) like "The support was great and my issue got solved quickly, but the five other people before this one couldn't help me!" Well, I'm sorry that I'm not the only person working there and some of my coworkers either being new or not the brightest or just the wrong department, but how is that my fault?
    Another customer left one point because "Yes, everything was good!" Ummm... I am sorry for everything being good...?

      People not understanding a point system makes me nuts. When my brother & I were forced to look into nursing homes, I had to warn him to NOT go by the stars; the reviews themselves had to be read. People don't seem to consider that they're playing with people's livelihood & important decisions.

    • @-desertpackrat

      I think this should be one of the places we apply AI, too. So, someone leaves a 1 star review, the AI quickly analyzes what they wrote and stops them with a prompt such as: "Hey there! We noticed you selected 1 star, but used positive terms in your review! Low ratings hurt and if you appreciate this service and want it to remain available, a higher rating helps a lot. Would you like to check and make sure you picked the right number of stars before proceeding?" I think most people are just lazy af and type out a review and then just click the stars and click enter as fast as they can without looking. Stopping and prompting them to correct it could snap some people out of their little robo-clicking mode and actually think about what they're doing. It's not feasible to hire humans to scan incoming reviews quickly, but an AI could manage it to an extent. It sees one star but reads "great food" and knows to halt the person and confirm, did they really mean to do this?
      Also there needs to be a way for owners to flag reviews and ratings that are nonsensical or unwarranted and skew the rating. Obviously removing anything you want isn't okay, but they should be able to flag a review, then the site itself reviews that flagging, sees that someone gave a 1 star rating but "never ate there", decides yes, that is inappropriate and doesn't belong with the real reviews, and allows the deletion of said review.

    Google has been dabbling with increasing engagement by changing up the language in their apps, so some people are honestly not understanding that their reviews are being posted. Same thing with Amazon, they'll occasionally send you mails with those questions by other customers that make it sound like you're replying directly to the other person, not that your answer is gonna end up on the website. Although Amazon has realised that and changed the wording to make it more obvious. And I think they've also added a "I don't know" button which basically does nothing, but it keeps people from posting that as an answer.
