That "I don't love you right now" just guts me.
My mom used to tell me to stop bitching when I was complaining as a kid/teen. I know what that means now, but as a kid/teen, to me, my mom was calling me a bitch, or she would say "I love you, but I don't like you right now" and that shit wrecked my self-esteem.
Kids don't reason the way adults do and don't have the same grasp of language we do so adults need to really choose our words carefully.
When my kids get in trouble, I make sure to tell them that I love them, they did a naughty thing and I am angry/disappointed with them, but I love them even when I'm angry. I tell them I don't like their BEHAVIOR. Never that I don't like them. One of my worst fears is that I ever give them a moment where they think I don't love them. And when I eff up, I apologize to them and admit when I was wrong. I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of unhealthy parenting and I don't want my kids to ever feel some of the things I had to growing up.

On the superman disguise thing, it's actually effective and works. There was a study done to see just how realistic it is in a real world setting to work and it worked, our brains don't recognise glasses as not part of the face, so when you remove the glasses our brain gets confused and is the same reason why people who you're used to seeing in glasses look strange without them, our brain thinks the glasses is part of them.

It's not just glasses, either. A change in hairstyle - even minor - when someone consistently wears their hair a certain way can and frequently WILL cause that facial recognition pathway to fritz out. I have a coworker who wears her hair back in a ponytail, with the flyaways pinned down by a wide soft headband. On the days she doesn't wear the headband and does a french braid/braided tails, it always startles me to see her. One time one of the doctors, with whom we had both worked for two years at that point, _introduced himself to her._ The moment she replied to him and he recognized her voice, you could *see* the confused glitching-brain expression fly across his face.

The "I don't love you right now" story reminds me of a time when I wasn't doing too well in school due to mental health, and my mom then proceeded to flat out scream at me for twenty minutes straight. She wouldn't let me leave the room, actively telling my dad to shut up when he asked her to stop as I was literally having a panic attack on the floor. And the real messed up part? She told all my extended family about me "failing" and her getting mad, laughing about it with them while I was in the vicinity and calling me lazy. She was PROUD she did it because it "made you try harder in school." In other words, she scared me to the point where I got massively afraid of failure, and even now, a year later, I'm still scared of her.

Mental Health is just as important as physical health. What she did was cruel. You are valid and the way you feel is valid. If you're having a hard time and need help that's not a personal failure. That's being human. Everyone needs love and support. She verbally abused you for asking for help. That's beyond messed up. I hope you are able to establish good boundaries with her and can live as far away as you want. I would not trust her again. She crossed so many lines and acts like abusing you was okay and funny. I'm so sorry you had to go through that.
Unfortunately, a lot of parents don't realize (or care) that they're their child's worst bullies. I was so afraid of failure, naturally, and my parents just escalated that to the point where I didn't want to try anything new because I was afraid of failing; I didn't like anything difficult because I was afraid of not succeeding. If I brough home anything less than a 75% in any of my classes, they acted as if I had failed the entire school year and wouldn't listen to anything I had to say, such as incompetent teachers or a subject I just naturally didn't excel at, which in turn brought down my motivation and it was a 50/50 whether my grades would go up or down because of it. And they asked, upon my moving out, why I wasn't happy living there with them. That is why, among other things.
I hope you are away from your mother or at least have boundaries against her. She doesn't deserve you in her life, you deserve more than her. I am so sorry this happened to you, and every one else who goes through this.

Even if you’re working with the most oblivious people in world, someone is bound to notice. As far as people on the streets, a very sad experiment that someone did: they took and made these fake missing kid posters, put them up at a busy store, and had a kid from those posters sit PRETTY MUCH RIGHT UNDERNEATH THEM!! Almost everyone passed the kid by, I think that only 1-3 people actually noticed, outta 1,000’s (not the actual numbers, this was over 10 yrs ago) so the crowd thing, I take it with a grain of salt…

most defnitely normal i don't what you are talking about none of us probably has or had depression this is as normal as it can be
      (Disclaimer: not a professional)
It is actually normal to some degree i think as relationships with different people may differ from each other this without even talking about the type of relationship as friendship, familiar or a boyfriend/girlfriend certainly differ in many things which can be confidence with the individuals of it, common interests, literally human mind as it works (family bonds are a thing + in a healthy love relationship theres probably more confidence than in friendship) and also what you may get with that relationship if you know what i mean BUT if you are hiding needs (not necessarily sexual although it can be), sadness or depression it is certainly a problem mostly with sadness and depression and you should talk about it with anyone you know (like a friend, family member, etc. Could be someone you know online yeah but is it the best no) and if the problem persists or you don't want to talk about it with them you should get therapy as it would most certainly help you and don't think you are not important to this world because you are and i love you as you are you cutie even if i don't know you and finally if you are going through something hard or feel as if all you have done has meant nothing remember life isn't always as one would like to but the important thing is you should never give up and know that there is people to support you.
that definitely took an unexpected turn also just so you know if you need more help i am thinking of uploading videos of this type of things so people can understand more about these things (psych2go like videos) but i will try to go more into a bit of detail as in general other channels make it not so detailed so it might be easier to understand or to be able to talk about more things without making a hor long video but this can make some misunderstandings as an example what actually can be depression because it isn't always as noticeable or severe as other cases but they are extremely bad for your mental health anyways and i am working on a video it won't be from the highest quality but i think it can be good enough so you are able to understand what i want to tell and hopefully i would finish it and upload it certainly soon not like this week maybe not even the next week but it should be this month at least okay i will stop already you can leave now and distract from those deep thoughts that you probably have after all i said.

Well, for my mom the most traumatizing experience with me was apparently me being abducted right under her nose when i was 2 years old. She had my baby sister on her back, and made me sit on a chair in a supermarket to have her hand free to look at something a bit closer (soap, i think). She turned her back to me, read the etiquette, turned back and i was gone (i was a really quiet child). According to her she ran around immediately screaming for me. Only by coincidence she had a glance at me at the lower floor from above, being lead towards the exit of the supermarket by an older woman. She got us when we just left and a car stopped in front of the woman. My mom said she nearly peed herself out of fear and started screaming like crazy, while snatching me from that woman who lied that she thought i was lost and wanted to bring me to the police (not the supermarket security, that was common in Moscow at that time, mind you). The car drove away immediately when my mom started screaming and when the supermarket security approached us (to see what the ruckus was about), the woman let go of me and ran and disappeared into the crowd.
I don't remember anything at all, but i do remember that even when we moved to Germany into a Black Forest village, my mom wouldn't let me play anywhere she couldn't see me or where there wasn't at least 3 other kids. And let's not even mention my family in Moscow who got traumatized by that too: whenever i visited them until i was 20 yrs old, they wouldn't let me take a single step out of the apartement on my own - while my 10-year old cousin girl was going to school and back all alone.

I also reverse-traumatised my Mum, though it was a coin flip of who would come out worse. I'd misbehaved and my Mum decided that she would donate one of my stuffed toys as punishment. I cried so hard afterwards when she told me that she immediately regretted it but couldn't get the toy back. I was inconsolable for days while she apologised profusely and vowed to never be that cruel again. Nowadays I can't remember the incident very well, though I do remember being upset. She, however, never took anything of mine away from me permanently ever again. I think if she hadn't made that decision and kept punishing me like that I would have held it in my heart much more tightly and our relationship wouldn't be as good as it is today.

Turns out, he was thrown in jail for a crime he didn't commit, and my aunt knew this and was gaslighting me my whole childhood so I wouldn't want to meet my dad, because I might realize he's not a mentally and emotionally abusive jerk like my uncle, and she (and my cousins) all _needed_ me to be there acting as their scapegoat, because the second I left to get my own place, he turned on everyone else.
Oh, right, my aunt doesn't remember the time she sat me down and showed me the "only letter" my dad sent me, which was a month-old wedding invitation that she hammered into me was just a ploy he was using to get his hands on me now that he was out of jail. In reality, he'd sent me dozens, and probably over a hundred or so letters, and had been in constant communication with my aunt during his two year stint in jail, the legal battle to prove his innocence, and the duration of his release and probationary period. She'd known he was innocent since I was four, and was still telling me horror stories of his villainy when I was ten, and then casually started talking one day about how he was actually 1000% innocent when I was ~18, because she hated my car for reminding her of my half-sister's name (the girl who cried wolf, and got our dad jailed, apparently because he wouldn't let her go to a party at a crack house).
That was when I stopped buying video games and started saving up so I could move out, and the whole family still can't imagine why I had wanted to leave. I'm 28 and I'm *_STILL_* getting calls and texts practically begging me to come back "for the week."
And don't worry, I _have_ had therapy. Wasn't for long-I'm not well off by any stretch-but I've started coping. I'm no longer depressive enough to resort to self harm or termination.

See, while a shark will leave you tf alone if you stay out of his house, a hippo will FOLLOW YOU ONTO LAND to end you. And they're herbivores, so this isn't even a craving for junk food, or a mistaken "seal" tasting. Oh no. They will end you because you breathed in their presence.

Combine taking away "convicted criminals" right to vote with a legal system that habitually falsely convicts people of a particular race based on dodgy fake evidence that it takes years to disprove and deconvict, and you have a neat system to disenfranchise people that the people in power don't like seeing vote. Add in disenfranchising everyone with the same name and post code because your legal system can't tell them apart, and it makes an even more powerful tool of apartheid.

I wanted to ask, is it abusive if your parent and sibling either yell at you or make fun of you and then shower you with gifts afterwards?
My parent does this alot. She yells at me constantly, refuses to take me to a doctor and makes it about herself (taking herself to a doctor), doesn't allow me to do anything around the house because everything I do is not well done- when I have no experience doing said things most of the time, gets mad at me when I have trouble expressing myself due to my learning disability- aswell as getting mad over the smallest things. She threatens to take things she bought for me back just due to mw being upset at her. Or she even gets mad when I cry. (She slapped me in school once for that) and gave me my fear of abandonment.
My brother (only other family because the rest cut off contact with us) tends to mock me, calls me a retard, at somepoint choked me a few times and we have constant fights over what he doesnt agree with about me, mom never steps in and blames me for all of it.
They give me gifts and buy stuff for me and it makes me feel guilty that I even think of them as evil even though I tend to go into depressive spirals due to their actions and just wish I could end it all.

I took a college course on conflict. The most important thing I learned when it comes to de-escalation it not to rise to the other person’s level.
If someone comes at you hot and angry and you remain claim 9/10 times they will come down to meet you’re energy. This is because primates innately mirror each other. And it’s heckin uncomfortable to be the only person yelling and freaking out.

    • @Kartoffelkamm
      @Kartoffelkamm ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, no, this is utter BS.
The only thing remaining calm when confronted with an aggressive person gets you is hurt. Every time.
When someone comes at you hot and angry, they already decided that someone would get hurt, so the best thing you can do to deescalate is to render them incapable of hurting anyone.
Literally the only time someone came at me, and I didn't end up in the hospital, was when I hit the guy with a shovel as soon as he got close enough.

Depending on the other person you will earn a kick to the face for trying to "confuse" or "drown" them with reason and arguments, or you will get a litany of _argumentum ad nauseam._ The classic one being the one charitably known as "Your mom in underwear" in the circles of Buenos Aires. Believe me, I tried it for many years. Standing firm is a much better idea, nothing how you are in public and convincing the otehr person thst they are better than this can work, but don't attempt to tell them to calm down unless they explicitly trust you. Make them think without trying to get them to use logic and they may calm down. If not, better make yourself small and look for escape. Just my two cents
