I feel so vindicated right now. I’ve used Logics flex pitch my entire time making music and people always gave me shit for specifically not using melodyne.
@@klontjespap I tried using the basic version I got with S1 as well the other day and couldn't figure it out. I consider myself fairly competent and can usually figure things out on my own, so if I can't I'm probably not going to bother with a plugin unless I get on youtube or read the manual and have some sort of epiphany about the UI
Hate that you’ve went through that but I’ve honestly never been able to tell if you did pitch correct on any of your songs. You’ve sounded so natural. So glad you found something that works a lot better for you and you did a great job reviewing each and showing their pros and cons. Thank you so much Jonathan
Well that's the thing with pitch correction, if the singer's good you won't hear much of a difference (unless there are harmonies, like he said). If you make changes that are too drastic though, it's not just obvious, it sounds like a robot emulating a sound
Halocene used the built in Reason manual pitch corrector for over 90% of our career. It's not even that good, lol... We were just too stubborn to use a DAW with actual VST3 support until basically this year, lol. Props to DAWs with built in Native pitch correction - StudioOne has integrated Melodyne (native) basically. No scanning, transferring between external 3rd party stuff. You need VST3 support with ARA in your DAW to avoid the decade old way of transferring from a DAW to the corrector every time.
I started with Studio One (still on it) because of this integration. Melodyne is my preferred tool and the workflow/integration using ARA is such a timesaver.
Dude...you've been tuning each note in your vibrato this whole time? I immediately appreciate you and your work 1000% more. I play the cello, (a fretless instrument) so I know the difference that a couple cents can make. I can't even comprehend dealing with the hell that you've dealt with.
i'm not a music producer or anything like that but this was incredibly entertaining to watch lol. i'm sorry it took you so long to find this, but i'm glad you did eventually find it!!! hope it continues to work out well for you! :D
There is a trick with melodyne in logic where you can make the regular version's detecting almost as fast as ARA. 1. Put the regular melodyne on the track you want to tune. 2. Open melodyne and engage the transfer/detect button. 3. Bounce the TRACK in place not the region, the key command is Control + Command + B, make sure the destination is set to NEW TRACK. 4. delete the NEW track you just created, you don't need it. 5. Open melodyne and you will find your audio has been detected in the time it took to bounce the track in place. Most of the time I use ARA but if it gets buggy on me I use this method so I don't have to sit while melodyne detects the pitch.
Solid explanation on the different kinds of pitch correction. As you said, every vocalist can benefit from pitch correction. I am a big fan of your music, and I had no idea you stream! Super cool! I recently started streaming production, and I'm so happy to find more creators doing that!
Glad you found something that improves your workflow. At the end of the day the goal of any software is to make your job easier while still being effective. It’s matching the right things to your personal workflow style and exploring those things to see what benefits you and what doesn’t. Seeing how Autotune performs on tuning tho, I do feel it’s more of a glaze than anything else, which is why I’m happy RTA came with my Apollo (i didn’t have to buy anything except the hardware I already wanted). Also having Melodyne I don’t really need much more since I can pretune and touch things up and still get that “modern sound” only autotune seems to be able to give for whatever reason. Like they’re for different things imo if that makes sense. I’d definitely turn to Melodyne, Logic’s built in thing, or something else that’s similar before relying solely on autotune.
Wellllll, I learned something new today about pitch correction. I was like the general public, thinking all pitch correction is just called Auto Tune, similar how people call all bandages, "Bandaids". I'm sharing this knowledge on the face.
Had something like this happen to me. I was asked to edit a youth night that had a bunch of skits recorded. Well my laptop took forever to render and I was rendering them one project at a time. Stumbled upon batch rendering, where you basically separate the clips by region and it'll render those separately. Been doing them one at a time for years before learning about that. Didn't lose any money, but the time and sleep lost...ugh...
Pitch correction not only makes songs sound better, it makes it easier to make songs, meaning people can make whatever songs they want which means more quality music for consumers. I see no problem with it as long as people are transparent about it like producers and performers have been in the last decade. Pitch correction is good
Yeah, as a session player/singer it’s rather unfortunate (but understandable) the common laymen’s narrative that pitch correction is some sort of cheat. Now, I understand that the use of “hard tuning” for the robotic effect is probably the culprit here, making the uninformed assume that correction’s purpose is to somehow make a bad singer magically sound good by slapping on some tuning, but it can still be pretty annoying to me when I hear mildly ignorant opinions from music fans (and even some musicians I’ve met) who think pitch correction somehow can be used to overcome lack of vocal skill, which is just untrue to the point of being preposterous. If a producer doesn’t like using it, and would rather spend more time comping more takes to cobble together some sort of Frankenstein-ish final edit of a vocal track that’s going to sound like unnatural garbage, I guess that’s up to them, obviously…but I don’t think I’ve ever met a producer of any quality who makes actual money that rejects time saving measures, _especially_ ones that improve their workflow. If pitch correction were some sort of cheat, then virtually everyone I’ve met who tracks vocals in the pro world is a cheater. I realize as I’m finishing this that it’s evolved into a little bit of a rant now, but I think it’s great that this guy (who’s vocal tracks sound great, btw) made a video that will probably help his fans, who may also have heard that “it’s cheating” better understand the nature of pitch correction, and that it’s not just for amateur hacks or something. 😇
Wow, you link pitch correction to more quality for consumers. I always thought it was a singers job to master his/her voice. Ever heard Paul McCartney or Freddie Mercury being pitch corrected? It's a laugh... meaning in a bad way.
Fl studio has the same thing. When you right click a vocal you can open pitch editor. Was thinking about getting melodyne b4 I learned about pitch editor
You mention how even talented singers benefit from pitch correction and say "that is for another conversation." Is there another video on that conversation? If not, I'd love to hear more on that topic. Also, you mentioned other types of pitch correction you use, I'd be interested in a brief review of each program you've tried to know out of the smaller ones which one you prefer. I'm so excited for this new channel and would love to hear more about personally producing music.
Great vid, love the edits! I've been using Reaper (cause man's gotta eat), but I've found that the built in pitch-correction is decent enough for me and am really surprised to see how well other built in stuff stands up against after market pitch-correction! P. S if you see this Jon, wanna say a big thanks, you inspired me to start trying to make music at home and step out my comfort zone with singing!
I’ve always just comped the vocals take to get the ones I want first, and the ran Melodyne while I went to go get drink or something, so I didn’t quite understand the whole “taking too long” aspect. However when you explained at 16:38 that, say, working with a client or something like that could be done in real time between takes, I finally got it, so thanks for the analogy, great vid!
I couldn't figure out why my harmonies were always flat when I went to pitch correct them. Come to find out the equal temperament used to set pitch frequencies means pitch correction is always sharp of the actual harmonic frequency.
I'm up at 3:30 am and I couldn't be more happier watching this. Johnathan, you have a hilarious sense of humor AND you are an amazing artist. Thank you so much for the laughs so late at night!!!
I really like these behind the scenes types videos. I don't know much about musical theory or the technical side of production, so the insight and wisdom is appreciated.
I've been using Waves Tune for years which requires the scanning thing, but switched to Melodyne recently. The ARA version works for me and its a HUGE time saver, also with the super expensive version thats like $800 or something you can view multiple vocal layers at the same time in every instance of Melodyne. Seeing them all together makes it pretty easy to adjust timings, match pitches or fix harmonies. This flex pitch tool looks pretty great too though, and I do all my vocal recording in Logic so i'll give it a try. Doesn't look like it has all the features of Melodyne but could easily be used 90% of the time and the other 10% of the time you break out one of the expensive tools.
I use Melodyne Studio, on my PC, a 4 minute track scans in less than 15 seconds. My clients are never bothered by conversion time. Also, most often I will select a region that I want to correct, rather than the whole track, and the correction is less than a second.
Absolute fucking legend. I was so devastated that my voice sucks with auto tune. I just learnt that auto tune fucks up everyone’s voice. Thanks, you’re the GREATEST.
There's a great video my Sideways that goes in depth about the whole auto-tune/pitch correction problem, I def recommend it to anyone that's interested : )
I’d love to see a video on different DAW’s you’ve used, like a tutorial or a pro’s and con’s thing on them. I’ve been playing music for a while, want to start recording, and honestly have no clue where to start with the whole tech/computer/production side of things.
That would be a great idea! I do know that Hop Pole Studios has some vids on this (spoiler alert: they chose Reaper) and some great tutorials, but a wider comparison would be nice too!
It’s really buggy in logic… I have a lot of old sessions that went and untuned themselves… it’s gotten to the point where working in Reaper now, I render a copy with tuning when I’m done so I have the original but also a tuned “take” in the take folder. That way it can’t go and untune everything and I can revert if I need to fix anything or render raws.
the shortcoming of flex is all about the breathing editing, Flex can never identify the breathing correctly but melodyne can, therefore I use both flex and melodyne, flex first for pitch corrections, and melodyne for fine tuning, and NO AUTOTUNE for sure lol
I really think pitch correction is like sandpaper. It doesn’t make the piece, it just smooths the edges out a little bit. I can’t stand when a whole bunch of effects and stuff are done to it. (Modern pop music) Good video brother.

I’ll say Flex Pitch is easier to use (and it’s my tool of choice) but I’ll say that I do think it’s pretty glitchy compared to the sound of Melodyne. But I choose Flex Pitch for the very efficiency of not importing vocals every time.
Has anyone else seen the video that Velcro put out about the product technically being called "hook and loop" and that Velcro is a brand name? They made their own music video about it lol
the ARA melodyne is pretty neat, but I use Mixcraft 9. It's built directly into that version of the DAW, which is kinda handy. Most often though I find myself using different VSTs like Gsnap and Kerovee though depending on the feeling I'm going for.
I totally recommend Melodyne and their pitch corrector for instruments called DNA: Direct Note Access. You can change note in the middle of a guitar chord. So instead of doing another take on a single missed note on a chord. You can add or change that one note. -via an OG Pro Audio Guitar Center employee .....i always hated auto tune
man I can't imagine doing something for years only to find out you weren't doing it as efficiently as you can well at least you know now can't wait to hear the sweet music you make with this super optimized program
Im seriously so glad that I learned about this through this video. I work an internship and my entire job is to use melodyne to pitch correct the vocals then mix them and bounce back to the master engineer. I enjoy mixing but it would always drag down my process by spending so much time scanning vocal tracks and hand editing every note
Well, if they really sound pitchy it's a nightmare, if they are just slightly out, it's sounds like a chorus. Sometimes a spot on, polished sound might not be what you are looking for.
It sounds like we learned to always explore the software we have when we're considering making a purchase of expensive production software? I say this as someone who works in Adobe software. I learn new shit in it every few weeks or months as I do my job.
Always great to discover neat out-of-box stuff you never knew your daw had. I don't have logic, so I'm stuck in the teeny tiny un-scalable window of Waves Tune, which i got on sale for 30 bucks :P It works pretty well aside from the awful window size once you figure out its quirks.
if you use standalone melodyne you can just put the wav file in it without scanning, but yeah it sucks using these two in a DAW because you have to scan the audio... takes so much time.
Hey Jon ! You've talked about songs that you didn't pitch correct because of time constrains... Could we listen to some of them with it now ? Would be cool !
"It's usual for professionals to spend a lot of money on their tools". Everybody enjoying what creators do need to know and UNDERSTAND this! Thank you!
I got some melodyne with my Studio One 4 professional, but never used it to anything other than pitch shift a whole song so I can play it with a different guitar tuning (song was in B, I was in Drop C)... Hearing Jonathan uses Melodyne, thinking he's just that flippin good, I'm gonna try it as well. I'm still gonna pay for singing lessons, but wil also use Melodyne on top of it. Thank you
I started out with trackers and Cubase 2.0 (Atari). And I was happy when it became possible to use plugins, music production became available to almost everyone. But Pitch сorrection(esp. autotuning) - has had a controversial impact on the industry. For the mixing engineer, it made easier to work on the material. But on the other hand, it is one of the reasons why many mediocre musicians and vocalists began to consider themselves professionals. Now the need for ear for music has disappeared. Although, many tasks have become solvable, for example, correction of polyphonic samples, etc.
Two things! I love this kinda videos, because I cant watch the streams, so this summaries are great! Thank you J! second thing: isn't the birthday song copyrighted?
Its weird I dont remember having to scan (in real time at least) with Melodyne, and I have Essentials with Reaper. But now i need to see if Reaper has something similar. If I had Mac Id look at Logic, but im on Windows unfortunately. Maybe Cubase has something similar.
I am not a musician nor do I work with tools of my personal choice but rather predetermined by my employer and yet, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you Jonathan, very cool.
I have melodyne and I've tried using it but usually I just spend like twenty minutes fiddling around with pitch and then deciding I like the "un corrected" version better anyways.
Immense thanks for this enlightening video! I've recently discovered your content and am thrilled to share that it's already saved me upwards of £400, as I fortunately own Logic Pro. This alone merits a resounding thumbs-up and a subscription to your channel. Keep up the splendid work! 😊
This is so funny (and of course also a bit sad) cause I discovered that even Magix Musik Maker has a decent pitch correction plugin built in. And I would still use it, if the 2013 version one day wouldn't have almost annihilated my Computer for some reason
While we're talking about Pitch Correction software hidden behind the two giants obscuring everyone... Is there any good free pitch correction software out there? I'm not a professional, nor do I even make music, I mostly want it for the purposes of being able to screw around with voices manually instead of depending on automated autotune apps that just change your voice live, but finding free software for such somewhat obscure purposes is always hell. And Audacity lacks the whole "separate things by notes" functionality as far as I can tell.
I wonder what other tricks I've been missing in Logic Pro.... F

So instead of doing another take on a single missed note on a chord. You can add or change that one note. -via an OG Pro Audio Guitar Center employee .....i always hated auto tune
In the daw presonus studio one there is a feature called edit with melodyne which scans immidiately every clip you slelected.
man I can't imagine doing something for years only to find out you weren't doing it as efficiently as you can well at least you know now can't wait to hear the sweet music you make with this super optimized program
Please do a full video as Big Head Jon
Im seriously so glad that I learned about this through this video. I work an internship and my entire job is to use melodyne to pitch correct the vocals then mix them and bounce back to the master engineer. I enjoy mixing but it would always drag down my process by spending so much time scanning vocal tracks and hand editing every note
I never thought of this from a harmonic perspective. A bunch of pitchy vocals stacked on top of each other sounds like a nightmare.
Well, if they really sound pitchy it's a nightmare, if they are just slightly out, it's sounds like a chorus. Sometimes a spot on, polished sound might not be what you are looking for.
That's why when I download a new software, the first thing I do is look at all the features.
It sounds like we learned to always explore the software we have when we're considering making a purchase of expensive production software?
I say this as someone who works in Adobe software. I learn new shit in it every few weeks or months as I do my job.
I know this feeling too well as a jr dev in a software company luckily I have sr devs to help me learn some of these lessons.
Always great to discover neat out-of-box stuff you never knew your daw had. I don't have logic, so I'm stuck in the teeny tiny un-scalable window of Waves Tune, which i got on sale for 30 bucks :P
It works pretty well aside from the awful window size once you figure out its quirks.
That's amazing. Unfortunately I'm on a PC with Pro Tools.
Bro this is so interesting to see and watch. keep it up man I'd LOVE to watch more of this
if you use standalone melodyne you can just put the wav file in it without scanning, but yeah it sucks using these two in a DAW because you have to scan the audio... takes so much time.
Hey Jon ! You've talked about songs that you didn't pitch correct because of time constrains... Could we listen to some of them with it now ? Would be cool !
"It's usual for professionals to spend a lot of money on their tools". Everybody enjoying what creators do need to know and UNDERSTAND this! Thank you!
I just can tell that me and my friends love your content, just keep doing it
I got some melodyne with my Studio One 4 professional, but never used it to anything other than pitch shift a whole song so I can play it with a different guitar tuning (song was in B, I was in Drop C)...
Absolutely friggin' RIP, man. 😭 F's in the chat.
Lol when I first got Logic flex pitch was one of the first things I tried using.
My favorite muggle!
You could almost feel the pain when he mentioned that logic pro had the pitch correction.
What??? So there are other smartphones than the iPhone, never knew that. Man learning something new every day.
This is actually really helpful
Two things! I love this kinda videos, because I cant watch the streams, so this summaries are great! Thank you J!
second thing: isn't the birthday song copyrighted?
all cover songs are
Not since 2016
Not any more. The copyright was declared invalid, and part of public domain in the US in 2015, and entered public domain in the EU in2017
Watching this channel is like magic… as someone who just likes to listen to your songs, I had no idea there was this much work and time afterwards.
"What's this button do?" ... "Oh hey, it saves me a thousand dollars and hundreds of hours of my life."
.... *cries in a corner*
That's a lot of damage! Uh... I mean money
I love hearing your Ted Talks and i love how you are starting to stream i grow up jamming out to your covers and your OG songs so have a good day mate
5:31 the feeling of pain and remorse is skyrocketing here dude
Am I the only one that notices a slight delay in his voice to whats on screen?
Its weird I dont remember having to scan (in real time at least) with Melodyne, and I have Essentials with Reaper.
But now i need to see if Reaper has something similar. If I had Mac Id look at Logic, but im on Windows unfortunately. Maybe Cubase has something similar.
I am not a musician nor do I work with tools of my personal choice but rather predetermined by my employer and yet, I really enjoyed this video.
Thank you Jonathan, very cool.
Similar to the one in Cubase!
I have melodyne and I've tried using it but usually I just spend like twenty minutes fiddling around with pitch and then deciding I like the "un corrected" version better anyways.
This is really interesting honestly, nice to see a bit more behind the curtain
Immense thanks for this enlightening video! I've recently discovered your content and am thrilled to share that it's already saved me upwards of £400, as I fortunately own Logic Pro. This alone merits a resounding thumbs-up and a subscription to your channel. Keep up the splendid work! 😊
ARA Melodyne will not only take your wallet but also take your project on the way out.
This is very entertaining to me even though I know both about pitch correcting. Thanks for making me interested in this.
Cubase also has built in pitch correction.
This is great! Why havent i found your 2nd channel until now?! Lol
Is it just me, or is the audio *slightly* out of sync for some of the parts in this video? Especially at the start!
I thought it was just me at first, but then I thought maybe he was making a point with his editing
This is so funny (and of course also a bit sad) cause I discovered that even Magix Musik Maker has a decent pitch correction plugin built in. And I would still use it, if the 2013 version one day wouldn't have almost annihilated my Computer for some reason
Even Reaper has vocal pitch correction. It's called ReaTune. I think it's not bad. 😁
It’s ok… not the greatest thing in the world but it definitely works for minor corrections well enough.
Also, question : Did Tesla arranged anything for using your cover for their "easter egg" this Christmas ?
Great seeing you like this
Honestly I felt this spiritually.
Am i glad that you put out this video 😂 i was thinking about getting melodine but now i’m not getting it
It's actually my birthday today!
So thanks for the song and the lesson!
