  • David Harvey's biggest lecture yet! Commenting on the conections undelying the many grassroots resistance experiences drawn um from social movements, and the dynamics of capitalism theorized by Marx, David Harvey discusses some of the more pressing issues of our time such as the relationshop between capital and politics, urban social movements and democracy.
This lecture took place in Fortaleza on November 17th 2014, during a series of talks entitled "The Political Economy Of Urbanization", marking the publishing of the second and final volume of his COMPANION TO MARX'S CAPITAL, by Boitempo. This trip took him also to the cities of Brasília, Recife, Fortaleza and São Paulo. The lectures also celebrated the publishing of Boitempo's new edition of Volume II of Marx's Capital - the first edition revised and expanded according to the documents of the MEGA2 project. Recently, Boitempo's edition of Volume I of Capital was awarded the Jabuti Prize for translation - the most important prize in the brazilian publishing world. All of professor Harvey's lectures were recorded and are being published here in Boitempo's channel on TH-cam.

Took me a moment to realize the person on the right is translating this after each brief paragraph. I am so impressed and jealous with this capacity to translate such in-depth ideas in real time!

Thank you very much from a Russian comrade.
Also, thanks for cutting out the translation parts (as much as I enjoy listening to Portuguese and consider it a magnificent language) it makes the flow of the argument smoother.
    P.S.
    The translator is very cute!

Excellent talk and very clear analysis. The big question is, if Capital's strategy today is to produce cities and houses that remain vacant, how does it generate profit? Only by profiting in the financial market?

Does anyone know where specifically Harvey has argued what he explains from 22:28? About US growth from 2000-2008 being driven by consumerism connected to speculative activities in the housing markets? :-)

Socially 'just form' of the city is admirable, but with his skills, he needs to be appointed to a commission to study (and hopefully understand) the global, orchestrated, covert movement of populations in 2022. Capitalism is only good when the safeguards of justice, wisdom, truth, light (as in transparency and clarity) and the right(s) of personal property are protected.
