Delta 78 Lens Array Dissection

  • I was out looting someone's dumping spot for their old, unwanted electronics, when I found this Delta 78 lens array. It was just sitting there collecting water, and I had plenty time on my hands, so I decided to take it out of the projection-screen TV it was in and bring it to the shop to crack it open.

STOP Ya'lls! you dont need to use any destructive means to disassemble the Delta 78 lense. Simpy remove the metal threaded focus adjuster handle and turn the lense cartridge so that it is fully extended. This aligns the focus handle so that they are aligned with the indentations in the outer piece. from there you just push the lense cartridge out toward the front.
Now you can reuse the whole assemble and retain its focus adjustment capacity in its original practical glory.
Also, i have found that when used with a high powered LED chip (i use 100W 9000 lumen) and their matching collimator, these lenses can be used to make a very nice stage style theater follow spotlight. if you arrange things slightly different you can even make a nice gobo.

I know you posted this 7 years ago but just in case you see it. Thank you. I have a set of these out of a TV that gave up the ghost which I was trying to recycle the lenses out of since they look like high quality lenses. I was getting ready to cut one of the shells when I thought to check youtube and your comment caused me to twist it, realize it was still jammed but upon closer inspection helped reveal there is a slot and all it takes once lined up is a tiny bit of prying to shove the adjusters into the slot. Just fell right out onto the table after that.

Thank for posting this. I have this exact lens and wanted to open it to clean it.
Of course the commenters explaining other methods are very useful too. (But I'm not seeing them serve the community by posting a how-to video, many are just criticizing. How too typical?)
Anyway, great video, despite the other methods, and great comments too.

First mistake is you said Gatorade! Lol. Doing projects like this for fun requires beer! 😆😎

Disculpa 😅 no entiendo inglés jeje
Pero yo me encontré uno de esos lentes (Delta 40)
( ¿crees que me sirvan si intento hacer un telescopio?)

the oil is a refractive index matching liquid so there isn't any reflection from the surfaces between the colored lens and the electron gun behind it
probably propylene glycol, glycerine or something like that - don't eat it, but it's probably not deadly

These lenses really are nice! A lot of thought went into the design and manufacturing. With a mix of plastic and glass, it looks like the overall goal was to reduce chromatic aberration, it could also be to stop x-ray emission.
Like others said, no Dremel needed! I have the same model lens assembly. Once you pull the inner assembly out a small flat screwdriver releases the tabs to pull apart manually. Easy peasy!
What has everyone used these for? I was thinking I could make a beam expander for my 445nm 6W laser, its a multimode diode laser so it has horrible divergence on the fast axis, a beam expander should help tremendously. I was also thinking of finding a way to use with my Sony Nex5N mirrorless cam, maybe rig up something to a lens adapter. Another possibility would be a DIY telescope.

Hi Robert just watched your video, good way to get them out if you want them and are not repairing tv, however wanted to you to know should you attempt this again the oil that is in the lenses is not water, it is ethylene glycol it is used to cool the surface of the gun as it presses against the lens assembly. You mentioned you cleaned it up just be careful as its pretty much antifreeze and you would not want that on your skin or eyes :)

Use your screwdriver to depress the tabs holding the sub assembly together, then you can close it back up or as we do use one half as a stand for the opened view of the lenses. Haven't found a good use for these lens yet....have you? Lawson di Ransom Canyon

I think I took apart one of the same TV's- came across this while trying to figure out how to make a telescope out of the lenses. Only occurred to me a few minutes ago that since there was more than one lens I'd have to take the array apart, haha.
I can safely tell you the liquid in the projection array was not just water- it smelled wrong, and didn't dry up after two weeks sitting in a puddle on my back porch. Probably some sort of oil to conduct heat away from the lens, or possibly propylene glycol.

Very Good day Friend, I would like to know if with a lens of those and a tv ctr of 5 inches, I could make a projector diy? For for example watch movies at home on a white wall.

    Why use a hacksaw?
Look closely for where the little tabs are, and then get stuck in with your Angle Grinder.

Why doesn't anyone do a little critical thinking before they start hacking at it. I swear. every vid I've seen, they feel that they have to cut the lens housing. Where the focusing nut is located, there is a small notch where you just need to slightly pry with a screwdriver and gently press the lens assembly out.

A "fair-no" lens...? It's spelled "fresnel", and pronounced "frehnell". These also split apart in about 30 seconds with a small flathead and you're using power tools? Jesus.

Frank Dalla At the time, I didn't. Of course, at the time, I was still in high school, and have never been an expert in projection screen TV's. But, I suppose I should be thanking you, as it seems there are still people watching the video that I had fun making.

My apology for judging you, it's just that I could have shown you the proper, non destructive way to disassemble and recover the lenses. So I got a laugh out of your hacksaw attack. It's all entertainment, no offense intended.
