    I think it's wild that we have had three seasons now of the 13th Doctor but she hasn't had one moment alone for her own adventures, she always has companions with her at all times from the very beginning to now. There's no room for any Big Finish stories with the 13th Doctor on her own. They've even established how she is very much not used to travelling alone from that one episode last season. And the wildest thing is that Yaz, Dan, and Jericho spent three years alone doing their own travels, rife for Big Finish stories. We literally have more potential for Jericho stories than 13th Doctor stories.

By the time I started coming round many other parts of the show had started grinding mainly "wobbly wobbly time whimy plot device" every week. I did appreciate the attempted complexity of everything going on although by the end of his run more of the ideas were misses due to how absurd and convoluted they were.

I liked series 5’s fairytale theme BUT, as you said, the writing SLIPPED. River was unbearable (constant riddles and one liners like … relax.) Clara was just annoying (if I start on her I’ll never stop) and Moffat can’t write a finale to save his skin. Series 5 finale was bearable but series 6 was just everywhere. Series 7-10 has been downright trash but I watched out of defence to my childhood favourite show. Series 11-13 I can’t even remember half the episodes and I know I’ve missed some of them. Her introduction came in my fave two episodes of all time "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the dead" . The spoilers kinda worked as it worked as it was part of her characterisation however her run was heavily party of the Americanisation campyness plus the 42 solution as I called it.... - For some reason, I really warmed to Vinder in this one. God knows why.
    - What a waste of Kate.
    - Did Jericho need to die? It just felt like "WE NEED A SAD BIT!"
    - Using the Passenger to absorb the Flux was quite clever, I liked it, and didn't think of it myself.

      I agree that getting the passenger to remove the flux was interesting but it doesn't really make sense, like how he got there. The doctor didn't bring him through the tardis, and we don't really know If he is more living than machine or operates as just a tool by the time twins and we really don't get to see that idea develop because that question was not only brought up in the same episode but also minutes before his "sacrifice"

    I’m surprised no one in any review I have watched has mentioned this:
    Why do the Daleks need the Sontaran protection?
    The Daleks we have seen them build and own and operate a void ship before. So why don’t they just go to the void again and move to the next universe?
    The Daleks who created a reality bomb to destroy all universes and they would somehow survive in their ship the crucible.
    So why do the Daleks need Sontaran help??

    • @Geniethegraet
      @Geniethegraet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The void ship Daleks were sucked back into the void, along with the Cybermen, and said ship was constructed by the Cult of Skaro, a sect of daleks devoted to thinking outside the box, where most daleks were unable to think like that. The reality bomb was also helped along by Davros, an exceptionally intelligent individual who helped them understand the physics of the reality bomb and the crucible. However, the daleks in Flux are not really at the hight of their power yet, meaning it would be unlikely that they could construct a crucible or a void sphere. The technology of the void sphere was also constructed at the hight of the most powerful dalek empire ever, during the insanity of the time war, where both the Time Lords and the Daleks experimented with technology that was insanely dangerous. Ultimately I can see the daleks not having the resources or the imagination to properly protect themselves from the Flux, and the Cybermen are just less advanced. The Lupari, as a wider species, were interesting, as they appeared to be fairly advanced, so I didn’t really get how they could be wiped out.
      But yeah, it can be argued that the daleks didn’t have the imagination or the technology to survive.

    Chibnall's era has so many missed opportunities. He had some good ideas, but he was absolutely terrible at executing them. I feel like flux might have suffered from having too many main characters and cuttable storylines. More time should have been spent developing the antagonists and those few characters that mattered (Dan, Kate Stewart, Jericho, etc). A big part of doctor who in the past has been the moral debate the doctor has when it comes to defeating the antagonists. Putting the doctor in charge of the flux should have been a serious dilemma. She could wipe out three of her worst enemies, but... should she? Is that too much power? I seem to remember twelve being mortified when Missy handed him an army of cybermen(correct me if I'm wrong).
    Not to mention the way the daleks and cybermen were handled. At the very least, both races would have had plans in place to make sure the sontarans would hold up their end of the bargain, as well as to ensure their own continued existence.
    In summary, Chibnall had some ideas, but he's a terrible writer with no idea how any of this actually works.

    - That one-armed lady didn't really need to be there. So many characters could have been removed; she's the one I'd pick.
    - So many cool big villains - Sontarans/Cybermen/Daleks/Snake man/the two Tweenies - but none of them really got any depth or worth of respect here.

      Unfortunately I don't think Davies is willing to redo 12's regeneration into a new 13 Doctor, and will instead try to build off of Chibnall''s garbage. That being said, there are some ways that these seasons could be made to make a bit more sense in retrospect. Such as declaring it all a simulation, maybe within the Matrix itself, controlled by the Master or Rassilon getting revenge for being exiled from Gallifrey. Or a dream induced by the Dream Lord/Valeyard. Both of these would explain the increasingly vast lack of any rationality, as it would be a kind of dream logic that falls apart more and more with the passage of time. Maybe an enemy of the Doctor wanted him/her to be confused about personal identity, history, the nature of the universe itself, as torture in order to get some information out of the Doctor or simply to psychologically break him/her. The Doctor not caring about people, even her own "close" companions, could be due to her sensing deep down that they aren't real. It is difficult to forge a genuine bond with an NPC in a video game, after all. This would also explain her doing morally questionable and even morally reprehensible actions, as it would then be comparable to a normal, well-adjusted person committing horrible crimes in a game like GTA because they know it isn't real, no one is actually getting hurt, whereas they would never do such things in real life. The simulation/dream scenario would also explain things like humanity's future in Orphan 55 not fitting with established lore (and the whole "one possible future that you can prevent" PSA contradicting the idea of fixed points and all that), or the Master's character arc being tossed away as if Series 10 never happened, or Gallifrey being destroyed again despite the 50th's emphatic "Gallifrey Falls No More." Another possibility that just occurred to me: Maybe Testimony captured the Doctor after Twice Upon a Time and put her into stasis, knowing how important the Doctor is and wanting to preserve her, perhaps at the behest of someone else, and so the Doctor is put into stasis in an induced dream or something. But if it is a larger simulation/prison, maybe a few of the other characters are actually fellow prisoners, who knows? The point is, something can be done to save the show. The question is, will it be done to save the show?

    Just to going to mention one of the things that annoyed me the most is how inconsistent the flux was. Like it wipes out some planets but not others? It can't get through a ship shield which would certainly mean Daleks and Cybermen would have the tech to survive it pretty easily. I think the flux would have been far better off being a far slower moving wave across the universe that wipes out everything and mean everything. This way you have a far better time limit for the doctor and co to save as many races as possible and would give a far better reason for Daleks and Cybermen and other species to run from it. Also all of the villains went out in the lamest way. What was the point? The whole point of villains is for the hero to overcome them somehow.
    Edit never mind about the passenger thing I think but it still doesn't quite make sense. I legit have memory wiped out this season as it was so badly written I watched to laugh at it.

      Yea, also the whole thing with ‘you can’t escape it if you get too close because you will be stuck in its gravitational pull’ also makes no sense. It’s just anti-matter. The TARDIS can easily escape black holes. Even if the TARDIS can’t fly away why can’t it dematerialise? The flux is just anti matter after all. Same goes for the dalek ships and the cyber ships.

    • @Gundam_JAY
      @Gundam_JAY 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the daleks and other species wouldn't have the technology be shielded from the flux because according to the show it's straight up anti matter and just automatically destroy whatever they had. And the reason the doctor and Kate think the lupari ships would be effective against the flux is because of their abundance they think that because there is so much matter to go through the flux will be hit at a stalemate because the number of matter is suppose to be higher than the speed of decomposition the flux has..... not sure fo that makes things better but I'm pretty sure that's the idea the show was trying to wrap around.
      Also the idea that the flux is a slow burning natural disaster was probably what the makers were going for but it fell flat.

    • @superrooster18
      @superrooster18 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Gundam_JAY anti matter can be contained. We have literally made it in real life, although only a few atoms. We were able to stop it from interacting with any other matter by magnetic fields so the daleks and cybermen could most certainly shield themselves from it.
      Just want to point out that if a paper clip of antimatter were to touch a paper clip of regular matter, the opposite particles would destroy each other and turn each other into pure energy and thus would result in a explosion powerful enough to destroy a city - basically equivalent to a few nuclear bombs. So how come when he doctor willingly lets genocide happen by trapping the daleks cybermen and Sontarans we don’t see the equivalent of a star being born every second of destruction. Also why can’t the cybermen, daleks and sontarans just teleport away? Why was the tardis unable to escape? The tardis is strong enough to easily pull ships out of a black hole
      and tow planets halfway across galaxy superclusters. How come a bunch of anti matter have enough gravitational pull to stop it? Hell. If the gravitational pull of the flux is strong enough to do that then I don’t see how the earth doesn’t get ripped apart. Like literally. Anti matter is just regular matter with the opposite charge. Even if the tardis couldn’t physically escape why tf couldn’t it just dematerialise?
      Chibnall’s writing is godly.

    There is a literary style where each chapter finishes on a cliffhanger. It has a specific name (other than cliffhanger), but can't remember it. First heard it on a program about The Da Vince Code book since Dan Brown uses it a lot there. It can be done well and it can be done badly - very badly. If the last page of a chapter is the cliffhanger setup and the first page of the next chapter is the cliffhanger resolution then everything before and after is unrelated to this cliffhanger then it is just an obvious hook when a writer isn't confident the actual story will keep people reading without it.
    The same is true here. Each episode finishes with something that is resolved in seconds in the next episode to try and keep the audience coming back week after week. Most blatant for me was Ep4/Ep5 - Doctor becomes a weeping angel and then doesn't; companions are stuck in a time-displaced village floating in the void and then they aren't. (All the Episodes did it, but this one was the most jarring for me.)

    How many genocides has 13 acquiesced in? How often does she arbitrate morally-dubious "justice"? How incapable is she when it comes to making tough but necessary decisions? Even as the scripts fall apart at the foundations, 13's character stays the same: a callous, uncaring, pompous, sociopathic, intolerant, genocidal control-freak whose inconsistent morality is part of her personality ("My rules change all the time", anyone?). It's a clear personality. The trouble is, we usually call this type of character a "villain". How is this the only consistently-written element of the entire era, practically the only personality any character has/retains, and why does no one with access to the levers of power seem to realise that it's a problem?

    So I just got around to finishing the series today and the last episode was pretty bad. Even with all the other confusing episodes, I will still able to follow along, but this one was just waaaaay too confusing for me. I also recently finished binge watching Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. It makes me wonder how well Vince Gilligan would be able to write and direct episodes of Dr. Who considering how amazing the other two series are. I think there are a few things that can be done to make Dr. Who much better. The first of which would be to introduce morally ambiguous characters and situations (intentionally) and to treat them as such. Immediately, that would make the show more interesting as it will add suspense as to whether a character will make the right choice or whether the choices the make will end up being the right ones. Perhaps this could come in the form of time going awry and the Doctor being forced to choose between the timeline inhabited by the main companions and the existence of a timeline an episode's character is from. I also do like the idea of a series long story made up of mini-stories. It was handled poorly this time, but it can work really well if the choices that characters make have consequences later on (like a butterfly effect). I have an idea of what I'd like to see in a series of Doctor Who which is inspired by what made Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul such good shows.
    1. Open the series with a teaser of the finale. This teaser would have to show something shocking and devastating such as a character becoming evil, the destruction of some place, reign of terror of a villain, etc.
    2. Time goes awry (possibly as a result of the flux series) such that competing timelines converge on and diverge from each other making the now established multiverse unstable. During episodes, we would meet characters from these timeline fragments whose existences would be in danger due to the instability of the multiverse (broken fixed points determine which characters can exist and who will be wiped out of existence in the past, present, and future).
    3. One of the characters met from the timeline fragments could be a situational villain fighting to defend their timeline and everyone in it from the threat of never existing in the first place. They could be a good person at heart, but their prioritization of their own timeline of others makes them desperate and an obstacle to the Doctor. Sympathy and tension regarding the character can be drawn by using visual effects to demonstrate their instability within the multiverse as they are always on the verge of being wiped from existence (like Rory was for a short period).
    4. Along the way, we meet alternate versions or "variants" of well known characters. Perhaps they meet a version of the Master who has finally turned good (perhaps due to the death of the Doctor in their universe), a version of the Doctor who uses villainous means to achieve charitable ends, a version of Davros contemplating what the final nature of the Daleks should be, or the Doctor and Rose from the parallel universe (perhaps their existence would be at stake in the series to drive in some serious tension).
    5. At some point, there should be a terrifying and highly threatening villain in the series. This villain can either be one that steals the show every time they appear or a much more stealthy villain that pulls off difficult operations almost effortlessly. Either way, every minute this villain is on screen, there should be extreme tension and suspense about what they'll do next.
    6. The series should have some good character development for all the main characters. This means that they have to have good characterization from the start and they need to undergo some sort of change or process of change. How extreme this needs to go can vary, but it must be present to make the series worth watching.

    18:52 At least the Dalek/Cybermen ships looked soooo much better than the FX from "Rise of Skywalker".

    RTD can fix this very easy, The show starts with a black screen, camera slowly pulls back to show a closed eyelid, Suddenly the eye opens, camera pulls back more to a sweaty, startled familiar face laying flat down on the floor of the Tardis, It the 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi) ! he jumps up and says "That was a HORRIBLE NIGHTMARE !!!" ,(effectively erasing all of Chibnall's crap) and goes on to figure out what Evil Beings hacked his brain and made him think he was a women to keep him busy while they threaten the fabric of time or something, then he regenerates into a new male Doctor. Fixed that easy , because it was all a bad DREAM...

      He would never do that in a million years. He's very good friends with Chris Chibnall and has indicated he actually likes some of his era to some extent. I don't think he's going to touch it anyways, because why do that? A new Doctor & a new showrunner is typically time for a soft reboot. No need to weigh down the new era with the baggage of the previous.

    Out of curiosity, what rating would you give Flux as a whole? Perhaps a 2/5, like the finale, or a 3.5/10, which is the average for the entire season based on your individual episode scores.

    I haven't watched Doctor Who since season 11. I gave up. This programme is dead. Took over 50 years, but it's gone. One more victim of the current culture we live in. I hate life.

    It's so frustrating because honestly, there were elements that were actually kinda solid! The Doctor being a flirt with herself, the interrogation, The Doctor talking to time about her near end, and the scene in the TARDIS talking to Yaz and dropping the watch to be kept away were good! But Chibnall tried again to wrap up everything at once and it just fell apart. Villains gone in a snap, no mention of Tecteun, the house, nothing. We have specials coming up that might answer WTF happened, but as of now... it's frustrating and disappointing.

    Why is everyone saying that all the lupari are close to carvanista? We do not know if he uses luparian or division weapons, +he, is, in fact, a dog analog of James bond, and other luparian are civilians.

    I dunno if this was just me or not, but in that final scene in the actual episode (the one at 22:13), I had captions on, The Doctor said something, but there was just... no voice? And he responds to it with voice. The music plays the whole time so it's as if they just... forgot to include the voice over? Please tell me this wasn't just me, because oh man what an oversight.

      Do me a favour and go on Iplayer and give me a rough time stamp. I've had a watch of the final scene and I am struggling to see what you are referring to. I don't think you are liar, I just need you to be specific so I can see what you are talking about.

    Well, the personification of time is consistent with the wider doctor who mythos, as before the logical reality that doctor who exists in now the universe was highly chaotic, with many beings existing then that don’t now.
    However, though I did enjoy Flux, it was pretty disjointed, needed to be written better, and needed more darkness and consistency (e.g. the universe has been utterly ravaged, yet the cybermen, daleks, and sontarans are fine? Like, that doesn’t make sense.) Also, it’s 2021 in said universe and Vinder knows about esoteric time lord/time war tech? Like, what? Empires more ancient than that have struggled to properly understand any of that.
