Amphan, the second super cyclone to form over the Bay of Bengal since 1999 and "a double challenge" due to COVID-19, made landfall in West Bengal at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, 20 May, and continued to cause destruction in the form of high-velocity winds and heavy rains till about early in the morning on 21 May. The Quint's reporter from Bengal gives a first-hand account of the ferocious storm from her 41st-floor residence in Kolkata.

Yes, absolutely. Think about on normal days if somehow there is power outage of all lifts then you have to reach 41st floor using stairs 😀. Incase of emergency like earthquake or fire you cannot go down easily also.

Her window did not fly off🙂 all our windows and doors were broken and carried off by the winds🙂 P.S. I stay in Haldia, in a 14th floor apartment near the river🙂🙂 where the cyclone amphan had the most intense force. And i can definitely assure it was a nightmare for all of us🙂🙂

I live in Hooghly district and we experienced pretty much the same sort of devastation as Kolkata city. Our first floor is under construction and one of the windows covered with aluminium sheet that was nailed shut just blew off because of the wind pressure. It took me and my father over an hour, in the dark, to close it with wooden boards and planks. The wind was so strong that it wouldn't let me hold the boards. It was like pushing against me, threatening to throw me off. I'll be honest... I've experienced the 2008 floods in Mumbai and this cyclone was by far the scariest experience of my life so far. And to think we live in proper houses...the poor who have suffered, I hope and pray for their well-being.

@@yasuyasu5070 but you have nothing to worry about, buildings above 20 floors have to follow certain construction protocols and are built in a way to suffice no damage. I have been to the bhurj khalifa and was on the 80th floor during a sandstorm. You can feel the building swaying from left to right and the workers carry on their buisness like it is nothing.
These are shock proof and earthquake proof light weight structures, so no worry.

I got this in my recommendation as there's a cyclone going on in the Arabian sea. I'm living near Pune and we can feel the winds going crazy. My native place is in Ratnagiri district and the cyclone passed from there causing lot of damage, but thankfully my family members are safe

One should never open a window during a cyclone while being on such an altitude. Air pressure is insane, a sudden change in air pressure could rip your home apart, wreck everything and could cause injury.
Her house was not looking like as though wind broke inside the room.
@@bshankar766 Bro the guy is right but TRÅILBLÅZER is also correct, here the changes are really less. Even i thought the first thing when she said lets open it. But it won't happen that easy and also needs some other criteria to make it happen which i cannot explain it here but to just give an idea its something like vacuum( due to pressure difference) and then you needs an outlet to break that vacuum real quick. It is definitely possible if surrounded by high pressure from all sides and suddenly one side becomes low pressure or vice versa, which is rare as she is in a flat(room) and the building seems really wide to make this phenomena possible. To vision how it would have looked like? She would have been sucked or pushed by an Alien Machine trying to escort, you into there ship floating in air while you are at the ground.The conclusion is: Do not try this at home what she just did in Cyclone. But i was actually thinking for Paragliding(Just kidding you need more height for it), at least better than getting sucked and dying (sarcasm) :P All readers of this please pray that the affected areas are recovered soon.

It is of cyclone Fani which had winds of 200 km/hr when it lashed Odisha last year compared to 130 km/hr at Kolkata. But you will get the idea of what can happen.

I'm from South 24 pargana, after cyclone we didn't get electricity for 6 days, too much damage , destruction. I am recalling those horrifying moments , n praying that it would not happen again

well, i also live in west bengal and unfortunately, the cyclone went right through where we lived,the next day when i woke up everything around was destroyed and we didnt have electricity for like a week. thinking about it still makes me scared

I visited Puri in August and they've not yet completely recovered from the cyclone. I still saw the distorted trees.

I'm from West Bengal and the electricity has been cut off after cyclone we are still living in darkness even after 10 day's later.
Had no electric connection for 10 days straight, that too because our house is closer to the main road. For few people it took as long as 21 days to get their electricity back. Reason : Huge population affected as per available manpower.
The worst condition was however the big trees across the streets all over Kolkata and its suburbs. I remember, that evening around 7pm, as the wind roared outside, with a sudden loud earth crackling sound, our electricity was gone. My mother screamed, and I rushed towards the balcony door to peek outside. I literally felt the thunder hitting our backyard, until with a small peek I realized the big mango tree in our backyard had hit the ground over the backyard wall. By the next morning when we actually came out and saw the surroundings, every big tree in the vicinity was demolished to ground.

Heed my advice: Sell off the place and move to a first/second floor flat. But the people who buy spaces in skyscrapers have a craze to stay on the topmost floor yet when God warns them thru His acts such as these they start to panic. Make the decision right in the beginning itself 👍

Hong Kong experiences strong typhoons every single year and it is a city of skyscrapers. There isn't much of a problem as such. Everyone should have home insurance, even if you live in a shorter building.
We pray to the almighty that no such things ever happen again!! At the same time we are really scared that Yash another super cyclone is going to hit the coastal areas of Kolkata is another 2 to 3 days of time...and the met predicted it's going to be more devastating than AMPHAN!!

We live in a two storied house in South Kolkata. During Amphan super cyclone we saw a whole asbestos shade of someone's house flying in the air. Two large trees, one Neem and one Champak in our garden got uprooted . The transformer near our house blasted like big crackers. I can't explain the what terror it created . I can never forget that evening.

Pl don't jump to conclusions. If it happened to any of us, you will also be terrified. A person living in slum lives with danger every day. So mentally they will be strong despite going thru difficulties. In this case, when you always live with comforts, your fear will be real and more. She would think what if building collapses. Becoz first time in life she is experiencing extreme weather. So please understand why she is crying. While slum dwellers face other types of problems, this experience for a normal human is also scary. Wish both of them well.

If more people could be accommodated in very little ground space by vertical consteuction.. then very little land will be used for residential and offcie purposes... So that more land could remain untouched and forested .. which results in carbon neutrality ..nowadays farming has to be done indoors... With vertical farming bioponics technology.....agricultural sector is also a bane for environment.. not much green as you see...
Only the forests and trees could save the oxygen and cleanse the air , land and water...

Staying so high would be more dangerous in case of a fire or earthquake. How many flights of stairs would one have to run when the lifts are also not advisable / shut off. Storms are no big deal.

Gated community is worst. People who likes to be controlled lives there.
Paul: Gated community is indeed safe in packed cities like Kolkata teeming with poverty stricken people that seldom have access to clean water and a pot to piss in. Gated communities keep those people away from the rich and therefore keep them safe from being robbed. It truly is as simple as that!! Please don't forget that, ( painful as it is to swallow) India is a land of steep disparity between the rich and the poor and therefore since the have nots out number the haves, the haves have to protect themselves in what ever way they can ie live in gated communities!!
Gates communities are always safer and even after cyclone, the gated communities have fared much better than other places. Power and mobile connectivity was not impacted in my community. Lots of trees were sadly lost. We could clear the roads much sooner

Could you please explain how horrible cyclone was. I never experienced cyclone when I was in Mumbai. I left India 18 years ago.
