pinkmatter Trisha was mad because Ethan made 5% more than she did on frenemies. He paid her 45% of the profits, taking 5% for production costs (in my opinion, it’s completely fair considering his team did all of the work).

@@pinkmatter8488 A reference to a conflict that Ethan had with Trisha Paytas. They made a show called Frenemies, and instead of splitting the income 50/50, he "took" an additional 5% to cover the cost for production etc.

@@kissedbyfirewyrms7312 that's not what anyone means by radicalize. Have you been on the internet or like any experience in US politics for the last 10 years.
When people say radicalize they mean for their view to become more and more extreme. For example we can have a standered conservative that thinks women should be more modest, then slowly over times he begins to think women shouldnt go to college, women shouldn't drive, and women should basicaly be slaves to their husband's. That is radicalization.

The vast majority of the time he has to talk constantly to keep the show going. Of course humans are still selfish and have self interest, but that doesn’t mean we always act on those traits. t's fine if he wants to advocate for 'democratic socialism' or some other form of socialism, but he calls it marxism and it's not. Marx was *very clear* about the *abolishment* of wage labour, for example, whereas Hasan calls 'marxism is no wages' a right-wing misconception. Marxism literally does mean no wages!

I think a big reason why Ethan says he's a capitalist and talks about win-win situations with regards to himself paying his editors etc. is the TH-cam bubble he exists in. The big majority of labor on this earth is not TH-cam or small businesses where you're friends with your boss, the majority of workers work in nameless faceless heartless gigantic businesses and factories, where they are definitely being exploited.
Just because there is a way to have a worker-boss relationship that is cool and dandy, doesn't mean it's the reality for 99% of people on this planet.

I work in the resturant industry in the US. Early day time cafe type deal. Breaks are given only if you seem to desperately need it. Even then good luck. They push us to our absolute limit on the line. On dish. Everywhere.Part of me really enjoyed it in the beginning, but over time as our sales have increased and our volume is now so much larger, all the negatives hasan talks about here have started to show. Most days I dont have time or energy to eat before my shift. We have to yell at servers to bring us water so we dont pass out on the line over the grills during hours and hours of cooking and pushing tickets. It bothers me that our health and our needs are second to the company goal: turn a profit. I love my managers, I love my co workers. They make it a lot easier. But being able to find a silver linning in piles of dog shit is sort of irrelevant.
Edit: In this industry when you are fighting to get to a place in the day where you can take a drink, take a piss, grab a snack for energy, and you still are made to feel like you are being inefficient because of it, is disturbing.

I think the biggest differrence here is that people in office HAVE to (supposedly) represent the values of their constituents or rather more accurately the people that helped them put into office (their financial backers unfortunately). Hasan is trying to educate someone who he knows is very much willing to understand and learn and unlike some random on an internet chat room who he'd have no clear way to be able to see their actual intention (its virtual impossible) in such a short span of time. Ethan and Hasan already have a rapport and a relationship that was already built up on where something like this can happen. They're not elected officials, they're commentators/content creators who in this show is largely trying to educate people on things from a different perspective that differs from the usual very liberal, hyper capitalist POV that everyone is very much familiar with.

this is also one of the issues with ethan's proposal of why just paying more to your workers and not being AS greedy isn't a solution: because our workplaces are still little dictatorships. when you work under a capitalist, you don't have any say in your workplace, nor claim to your own labor. you can do something that saves the company thousands of dollars, and they'll pay you the exact same--or worse yet fire you tomorrow because you showed up to work late. it's a lot about autonomy and democracy.
under a democratic workplace, you would not only get the benefits of making more money because labor is distributed--if not equal, then at least in a way that everyone agreed with--but also get to decide collectively how much you all want to do.
like, imagine the end of the year comes and your econ department comes out with a report and is like, "so our production was really good this year, we can afford to work a day less in the week and make the same amount." now not only are you making good money, but you have more free time. this can only happen in an environment where the workers get a fair say, because in our current system what would happen is that the bosses/owners would up production, everyone has to pick up an extra few hours, MAYBE pay everyone a quarter extra, and then the bosses get a five to six figure raise.

Ethan, with peace and love, people like warehouse workers that have a dislike of the ultra wealthy are not "low tier bitterness." They are hard working people that unfortunately end up working for large corporate distribution centers that see them only as numbers and productivity. A lot of these people live in rural areas that have limited job opportunities to begin with. So they become trapped in these jobs that wreak havoc on their bodies and scrape by to make a living for their families. For example, imagine being stuck working in a warehouse for a corporation like Walmart in a state like Florida and Walmart doesn't even have A/C in your building. I'm sure you wouldn't be a fan of the board members that make millions of dollars from a company that makes billions and they can't even provide air-conditioning for the people that make their operations possible. In a place like Florida. Examples like that are disgusting and I can't blame people that look at the ultra wealthy people in such corporations sideways. I know that you and Hasan have worked hard for the money you make and treat your employees well but honestly instead of dissing people who have a problem with wealth maybe try to empathize with them. Not everybody has the experience of working for a wealthy person or corporation that actually gives a shit about them. Never mind actually being a wealthy person. I know that lots of wealthy people do wonderful things for the world and I also don't believe that wealth is inherently bad. However, it comes down to what you do with it and how you treat the people that make it possible. Guaranteed that you have lots of "low tier bitterness" that watch your channel so you can have ad revenue and they buy the clothes that you make revenue from. I don't think you meant to be unkind but just remember that people of all experiences and opinions help to make your wealth possible.

Capitalism is the private ownership of capital and voluntary labor; It is often marked by free markets. That's it. Ascribing more qualities to the term is intellectually dishonest.
To your point; Your labor is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. When I flipped burgers at McDonald's I made $6. 45/hour because I had zero marketable skills other than use of both hands and a functional brain. Almost any other human on earth could have replaced me. I didn't deserve more than I was paid.
After picking up a marketable skill I started making considerably more. Bring more value to the table and your labor will be worth more.

How many burgers did you chuck through the window in a given hour and how much did you charge for them. How much did you get paid in wages for that hour. Fast food actually generates a decent amount of money. In Denmark burgers cost the same but McDonald's workers make $22/hr plus excellent benefits simply because they have sectoral unions. Either stand in solidarity with your fellow workers and get a larger share of your labor value or stab each other in the back in the race to the bottom where the capitalist keeps more of the value YOU created.

I get handsomely paid for my labor thank you very much. All it took was acquiring skills other people were willing to pays for, imagine that. No college debt either.
Cost of living is much higher in Denmark; One article by the NYT puts it at 30% higher. Of course their wages would be higher. Their massive wealth distribution policies are the biggest contributor to this.
McDonald's was quite possibly the worst job I ever had in a long list of shitty jobs from the age of 15 to 30, it was also my first job ever. Comically working at McDonalds sucked because the worst people in existence often enjoy eating at McDonald's. To be clear I hate McDonald's, but that's because their food is garbage and their meat is from the hell that is factory farming.
Whoever owns the McDonald's franchise I worked at owns all the debt for the fixed capital in that restaurant; HVAC, refrigeration, friars, ect. The franchise owner paid all local fees and taxes to open up, pays McDonald's for all the marketing material etc they must use, and does all administration or pays someone to do it. If that McDonald's had failed I just go wrap burritos at the Taco Bell next door. The owner of that McDonald's is in the hole for all the debt. Why in the fuck would I be entitled to dictate my pay? Especially since I had NO SKILLS other than the most simple ones. A nigh infinite number of humans could have replaced me, there was nothing special about me warranting more pay. I had no leverage.
This is an obscenely entitled worldview you hold. If you're selling a hat on ebay does the buyer dictate to you what they should pay you? No, you negotiate as free individuals and come to an agreed upon price. What's that? You don't like what McDonald's is offering you to work for them? Then go work for someone paying more. What's that? You don't have skills the market will pay more for? Then go get some.
I really like cats. If I open a sweater company that caters to cats and charge $10,000 per sweater I probably won't sell a lot. Instead of demanding the government force people to buy my sweaters at $10,000 each I need to lower my prices to compete or convince people there is value in my $10,000 cat sweaters. So it goes with your labor, it's worth what someone will pay for it, and nothing more.
The difference between you and me is I believe men should have the freedom of how to run their affairs in life. You believe men should not be free to do so and that the government should dictate how men run their affairs. Enjoy your slave mentality of entitlement.

The fact that Ethan harps so hard about the difference between a few million dollars and billions is a valid point. But I wonder if he stopped to consider that the service industry workers he is specifically talking about make roughly 15,000 a year.

The real contradictions of capitalism are automation vs labor, and artificial scarcity vs efficiency. We have an economic system that has people at odds with technical progress. Imagine if our economy didnt incentivize profit motive but instead incentivized automation and open source technology and respected the scientific method for answering objective structural questions. We could whittle the work week down from 40 hours, to 30, to 20, to 10... imagine if our goal was to work as few hours as possible, with the highest economic efficiency as possible. I can only guess it's an attachment to the material culture we live in and people cant think of a world with a completely different economic system that is well structured around our modern understanding of human behavior (especially intrinsic motivations), and the trends of technological development.

But you need the private sector, ie real estate investors, to find distressed properties, fix them up, and rent them out. The government does not have the ability to provide that on a nationwide scale, and what they do provide, is absolute garbage. Just look at government run housing, it’s an absolute disaster as it’s disgusting and poorly maintained. If you claim housing is a human right, then what you’re basically saying is that those investors should work for free to build houses for everyone and that their time isn’t worth anything. Sorry, but that’s not how humans operate. Either you allow real estate investors to renovate properties, rent them out, and make a profit, or you don’t have housing, aside from the very limited public housing that the government is capable of providing.
