Bought this laptop 8 years ago and just recently replaced it with a full gaming PC. This still the test of time, still holding up to games, but ultimately being a great daily driver, work/media laptop. No failures, worked in docked mode for the last 3 years. Great buy 8 years ago. Thanks for the recommendation Linus!
I've owned the 1080p version of this particular notebook for about 5 months and I have to say that it has been amazing. No issues, great build, perfect gaming experience; I love it.
Awesome! I'm thinking to get it ... Would it run games like Bioshock Infinite smooth enough to enjoy the game in general, in your opinion? Not a hard gamer, but i like to game once in a while, and this is within my price range.
Brittney Yu You'd definitely be able to run Bioshock infinite just fine. I have a 4-year-old Macbook Pro (with a mobile AMD GPU that's really not meant for gaming) and it runs Infinite really smoothly on medium settings, so I'm sure a newer laptop that's actually meant for gaming should handle it fine. Also, if you haven't played Infinite, it's amazing game and you totally need to!
You guys seriously have the best intro/outro music on the internet. This is the only channel I don't skip them on, so whatever you do, don't mess with it again.
I have the 4k model, GTX 960m. I just leave the screen resolution at 1440p. The only thing I don't like about it is the 48hz limit and the useless 4k resolution. You cant game with a GTX960m at 4k resolution, period.
+Armando Aranda well I have it except that my screen is 1080p. the screen seems OK to me tho, unlike what others say. the only problem I have with it is the trackpad where it's a bit weird and some clicks dun register. that's all tho
+Taillow77 Hey I just bought the Y50 4k as a Christmas present and plan on using it as a gaming laptop! Are you just running your game in 1080p to get good frames? :)
@@hobo_warrior7777 the most modern game Ive tried is Fallout 4 and it runs at 8fps with low settings. I am able to play games like My Time at Portia with 40 fps with medium settings fine. But currently, if you want to play games with the best performance, get a desktop or you're gonna spend $1600+ on a laptop that will meet your needs for a year at best.
@@FredDurst00 something is wrong if fallout 4 runs at 8fps, i haven't received this laptop yet but i have seen performance benchmarks and every game runs at above 30-40 fps at 1080p even at low-medium
@@hobo_warrior7777 I think it's decent. I had only 8gb stock and updated it to 16bg, I play games like ARK,Rust, GTAV etc.. I was having stutter issues with RUST until i upgraded to 16gb, that was a memory issues I assume cause it doesn't happen much. I'm forced to use Vsync alot cause of screen tearning in games, but eh.. Other that that u can buy this laptop used for around 400$ and it's well worth it. I bought mine from a guy on Facebook selling thingy, for like 350 he wanted 5 but i got him down to 350. My only issues are 1. The keys seem flimsy, i had to replace 3 keys already ( and to replace entire keyboard its a hassle) 2. The video card is solderd onto the motherboard. So no upgrading your video card past the 860 3. It heats up, I sugess using someting to set it on so its a few inchces from the table or w/e its on so you get better air flow (especially if your overclocking it) stays relatelitevly cool tho. I never go over 65c on 80-90% loads. 4. I've herd the hinges go bad on these but haven't experienced that yet. Over all I'd say its a decent little laptop if you can get one second hand and in good condition like i did. I w
gamhacked Sounds great. I will just put a 24" screen in my backpack and carry it around all day. Isnt the whole point to have a high-res workstation AND be able to work pretty much anywhere? Never mind the need of a power source for that 24" screen.
Lane47 So what is it that you need a 4k laptop [with mediocre specs] for? Go ahead and strain your eyes on a pygmy screen crammed with 8 million pixels. I see very little to be gained at that monitor size for such a performance sacrifice.
gamhacked Why would you strain your eyes on a 4klaptop? 4k on a "pygmy screen" actually just increases the pixel density and thus making it a lot easier to read text (and putting less strain on your eyes). 4k on 15 inch works out to 293 ppi which is about what you get on a phone or tablet. In a workstation environment (i.e. outside of games) the performance impact of 4k shouldn't be that significant - if even noticeable at all. So yes I would much rather have a 4k screen on my laptop than carry a seperate monitor around with me.
I'm referring to what people are saying about having more space to work if they're using 4k than if they're using 2k on a screen of he same size, which I find to be BS.
Wow guys... Genral remark from a Dutch subscriber. Keep it up. So much info and intel at a level that's understandable for me personally. Every minute of watching so far has paid off double. If it didn't bring me up to speed about the topic (=rare) then it made me smile from ear to ear. Hope to hear much more from you lot. Take care..
Hi everybody. Im not trying to start any arguments by posting this comment, but I bought this laptop and absolutely love it. The first thing I thought when I first bought this was :Oh god, will I have a Maxwell 4GB or a Kepler one?!". The answer is I got a Maxwell one :). Straight away I opened GPU-Z and checked, the architecture area confirmed I have a GM107 GPU with 4096GB VRAM. IM SO HAPPY TO SAY THE LEAST XD. Now I know there are SHIT TONS of people who think that the 4GB in the y50 is kepler, long story short NO GTX 860M IN THE LENOVO IDEAPAD Y50 HAS KEPLER ARCHITECTURE TO DATE, THEY ALL HAVE MAXWELL GPU's.
Comments made previously on this video that prove my point: Vedant Vohra 1 month ago "The $50 cheaper non-4k version has a better 4gig 860m which is maxwell so also gives much better battery life."
I can confirm that the 4GB VRAM for the GTX 860M GPU is based on Maxwell Architecture (Im assuming that's what your referring to when you said "some query regarding this laptop")
Well yea but also more have you tried the new games like Wolfenstien (2014) and watch dogs? have you tried to play them on 4k? how much fps are you getting? is the 48 htz screen any problem? is it possible to increase the resolution in game as Nvidia has given support for hitman absolution and many such games for 4k so have you tried the last gen games on 4k? and most important thing is this laptop worth for gaming?
i JUST got one of these for my little sister yesterday, an it doesn't game for 4 hours ( he also said that he could game for ONE hour on it an it last 4 hours doing other task)
Yeah, display really sucks, colours aren't quite right, viewing angles are really bad. However it's possible to change the display to a better one for $50-100, and after that I'd say it'd be a damn good notebook.
I just watched this video today to bring me back to the time when I was entering into the foundation, and this laptop was the first laptop that I bought. Having fun with friends playing FIFA in a dorm packed around 8 peoples. Today, this laptop's gpu and speakers has damaged, but still can do everyday task. This laptop is the symbol of my bittersweet university memories, if only I could go re-experience it back....
@@knowwork9 Sorry, too busy with working. Editing for me is ok as this processor has multi-thread, but for gaming, you need to tone down to 720p fxaa to get the best gaming experience. You can still run crysis 3 at ultra if you follow this 720p fxaa rules, heck, you can even play RE2 Remake, ESO, COD.
I just bought a y50 4k a couple days ago. I wanted 4k for watching and editing 4k video from my gopro. I thought I'll just do the work arounds to play games, which I only do once in awhile. However, they must have upgraded the drivers or something. There are NO black bars around the screen when playing at lower resolutions. Batman Arkham city actually plays in 4k! (fps is not very good but it looks amazing!) Playing in 1080p is super smooth and is full screen, no bars. I love this laptop. Windows 8.1 still has some scaling issues, but overall it's fantastic.
The yellow is a bit green as has been mentioned but it's not something I notice. I'm satisfied with the performance for editing. 4k gopro video looks fantastic but is still huge files and it takes time to process. For the money I'm very happy with the performance but might buy a WD black2 combo drive for more space. 256 gig ssd fills up fast with 4k video.
Makoto hayashi I have played Skyrim, and a couple other games (flight sims) and so far nothing has black boarders. Anytime the resolution is less than 2160p the screen is scaled to full screen. The scaling is pretty good, 1080p games look very sharp and crisp.
@@eArtrash ;/ i can take one of this machine with 960 4g i7 16ram with 4k display its so cleanly and i need it for gaming and editing is it good bro? Im confused ;/ and how the cooling system
After going through many brands of headphones I actually enjoy the PlayStation Gold headset as my daily drivers. They gel well with me and are very versatile wireless or wired. Many audiophiles are too snobby to give such a cheap can a try, lol.
There is no downscaling problems, it's 4 pixels to 1 so it's going to look fine. Gaming on 4k shouldn't be a selling point considering laptops aren't for gaming and the screen alone should be a prime selling point because 4k monitors are expensive anyways.
Kavo-Thizzla running a game in a tiny screen surrounded by black bars (like at 6:04) doesn't seem better to me. Until they get those drivers fixed, this doesn't seem like the best option for gaming right now.
THANKS FOR REMINDING ME ABOUT MY AUDIO TECHNICA ATH M50. I JUST RAN OVER THEM WITH MY CHAIR AND BROKE THEM AND NOW I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO REPLACE THEM! THANKS LINUS!
There's a boatload of MBP reviews across the internet and a lot of people love them. So yeah, it falls into those Audio Technicas. They are good, and people know they are good. But Linus wants to review a product that appeals to his viewers.
False! Went from a VG278HE to triple portrait U231HMs. Then I bought a XL2720T because I missed 120hz. Sold it within a month. Going from IPS back to TN was 10x harder than going from 120hz to 60hz. But as soon as they make a ~$200 IPS 120hz+ monitor I'm getting 3 of those ASAP. Once you go triple portrait there's no going back.
So lesson learnt, don't get the 4K yet, grab the 1080p display and enjoy full screen gaming. Much cheaper with exactly the same spec apart from the display.
***** It's not that bad, it's only bad if you do photoshop and such, and for people like me, when i'm home i just use my 27" 1080P screen. It's definetly worth what it costs though, i'm getting the i5 version with the same specs, 749 dollars.
Im so glad that you finally got to review a Lenovo gaming laptop. I really like that they have moved away from the SLI configuration, that is what drove me away from the y500. Also I appreciate that you noticed the quality of lenovos keyboards, my gigabyte laptop in the same price range has one that is so much worse and I wish that high end notebook manufacturers would realize when spending that much on a laptop, a good keyboard is kind of expected.
Linus!! Great review man I just bought the 1080 model. I was thinking about investing the extra three four hundred for the 4k version but I appreciate your knowledge as well as your time time!! Cheers to you all at the linus media group!
Somehow Linus is starting to annoy me with these videos. It was much better when he unboxed and reviewed every little thing. Now he is just so full of himself.
***** His attitude is all like "I dont have time" "I dont fucking give shit about this product" "I`m so tired of this crap". That is what I get watching his videos nowdays. I know he dont give a fuck about the company that makes those products, he just acts cocky. He was much more down to earth before.
***** How is linus full of himself?I mean come on,especially if you used to like his content nothing changed. His attitude is far from not caring as he goes through every little detail with alot of thought clearly put into it.To each his own though, there are some other good tech channels aswell for you to check out if you don't like linus.
Dont know, maybe this is just his professional review, rather than the down to earth style video. Because this is a product samples, and one of the staff from lenovo have to watch this professional review. he's going to have 2 kids now, every night he has to come up with great ideas for videos, a lot of stress can change you, and so does fame. personally, i still like their review style, it still fun to watch for us, and maybe for newcomers.
I don't know what the hell I did, but I managed to get my Y50 to play games with 60hz. Idk but I screwed up my computer after I plugged in an external monitor which ruined my resolution, scale, and even some drivers + DirectX. It took me a while after failed driver fails, Windows crashes and such, but my laptop worked after a while (though in questioning some stuff because it screwed up a lot). What happened is that I believe that the laptop thinks it's part in the external monitor (which has 60hz) but it knows it is also the UHD monitor this supplying with 4K res. On desktop it is in 4K with the standard 48hz and when I launch a game (which is below 4K, in 1080p to be more specific) it goes to 60hz.
tony plane yes i think it is fixed because i can run far cry 4 without changing the resolution of my screen, but i am not sure if far cry 4 is a Direct X11 game. if it is yes its fixed
Dude you right! me too :( It have too also 4k resolution in desktop but i have an idea to fix that. Go to Intel graphics, go to Display and you will see in the categories: "Custom display" And your'e type the 4k resolution: 3840*2160 and apply. Wait! You have to restart pc in then you will see in display settings the 4k resolution :D
+yamaan93 Look, you don't need any website or something. if you want to run your lenovo PC on 4k resolution or any resolution you want. just add the resolutiom in Intel propeties> Display>Custom resolution. That's it! :)
I don't think this is for gaming. I think it's just a beautiful laptop that can do decent...everything. It's not designed for Max Settings whatever. It's just something that is a good all-around. I'd prefer a 870M, and I'd always buy a proper desktop for the price, but some people may like the fact of a crystal-sharp monitor with good ergonomics. If you want this laptop, get the 1080p one. 4k gaming laptops are something that is a next-generation. But it's a good multimedia laptop. That's my opinion.
Laptops with the 870m are much more expensive than this. But yeah, I don't see why they're cramming so many pixels onto gaming notebooks when you can't game at that resolution. Even the new Razer Blade can't run games at its native 3200x1800 resolution.
asdfrozen We wont be able to do 3k/4k resolution gaming on laptops for a good while. Maybe 2-3 more GPU cycles before we are maybe able to. Though who knows. But when it comes.....
***** Honestly, I fucking hate my decision to buy the Y510p. The touchpad is fucking horrible, the laptop has horrid heating issues (you can't use WASD on taxing games like Metro:LL or you'll burn your fingers), and the keyboard itself is very flexible (in a bad way) and poorly designed if you live in Canada. For some reason, the picture of the Y510p is NOT the same as the model you will receive- you get the Quebec french keyboard instead of the traditional. This is terrible because first, your left shift key is smaller, the enter key is just weirdly shaped, and your keyboard will be littered with french symbols and accents nobody gives a fuck about. Although I do admit, it is ALRIGHT for a gaming laptop, any dedicated person PC gamer should stick to getting a desktop. I paid $900 CA for my laptop, and I deeply regretted it when i saw a deal for a Desktop containing a GTX 760 for $900. Maybe the Y50 is a hell of a lot better than it's predecessor, but lenovo is too fucking cheap to issue a trade-in deal for unsatisfied customers like me.
Today I bought the Lenovo Y50-70 1080p 960m i7-4720HQ 8GB 1TB SSHD version. Now I have to wait untill it arrives... :O (I had to edit my post because I accidentally said Y40-70 and 980m.. Damn I failed xD )
Kim Jong Un Pretty well. BF4 on medium will get you above 60fps. IMO it is pretty loud though. It is also slow from time to time because the SSHD is only 5400RPM. But overall the price/performance is pretty well :D Also, in idle you'll notice that the keyboard gets warm, but while gaming the laptop will stay pretty cool on the inside.
***** Do you really expect people to buy laptops at this pricepoint if it didn't have a 60Hz (or more) screen? In other words, yes. It does have a 60Hz (ips) display
Linus, I have the Lenovo Y510P model with SLI 750Ms, and even though that it is a year old... I still think it would be worth a review. It was my first computer purchase as I am still saving for my dream gaming rig. But, this laptop has been an absolute pleasure, it has no problem with games and think for the price is one of the best gaming laptops on the market.
Bought the 2014 Modell with FHD and of course the 860M 4 month ago. Amazon has it on sale as the update with the 960M was upcoming. I paid only 750€ (~800$)! Im really happy with it and never regret the buy. Im sure the 2015 Modell with the 960M is great as the 2014 is!
I've had this laptop for almost two weeks. I totally agree with you, in that I am also hesitant to recommend it as a gaming laptop. Especially for competitive gamers where frame rates are essential to player performance/control responsiveness. Done extensive testing and temps usually never go above 70C while gaming. While under load the heat emitted around the middle of the keyboard bothers me, so I just connect my daskeyboard and it's all good. I wish they could put the ASUS g750 cooling into this laptop's form factor then it'd be perfect. regarding the lower resolution black bar problem. Even if your desktop is on 1080p resolution the dx11 game will still change the resolution back to 4k and then do the black bar thing. Really frustrating. I discovered my own workaround by pressing ctrl+alt+del while in game, then going back into the game and it will go fullscreen without the black bars. I think your desktop resolution needs to be 1080p when doing this. Fingers crossed they release updates for this...and i hope various programs will update soon to support 4k resolutions. Otherwise they all look super small and/or blurry if u run them while on 4k. In the meantime, I'm running on 1080p and everything still looks really nice albeit slightly less clear than on 4k. This laptop has been an amazing piece of hardware other than this problem. Photos look amAZING on the 4k display. I think this laptop is best for photographers, photo/video editors, casual gamers. This laptop is so sexy looking and the sexy black soft rubber matte finish on the inside is to die for. Heavenly for your hands to rest on. And the bang for the buck is just too great. It's da sex! All that is left to see is it's longevity and to wait for more 4k support software updates to come in.
I have to say that I have had my Y50 for around 2 months now and I got the 3rd cheapest model. I love it and I have had no problems with it yet. This is the 1080p model and it looks wonderful. Linus mentioned the hotspot between the e and y keys which is in fact true. It does not happen too quickly when gaming but if you game for about 30 minutes that puts the GPU at a high work load, it will get hot. However, this is easily fixed by a laptop cooler. Overall, I love the thing.
I actually got the version with i5 and 8GB of ram. have had it for a month now and loving it. I'v had some issues with the drive going to 100% and the laptop freezing but was able to fix it by removing some not needed stuff. But thanks for the awesome review.
For those wondering, there are many variants of the Y50, I didn't even know there are 4K and touchscreen variants of it. The majority of the Y50s "only" have a 1080p display, and there, the newest games (Titanfall, BF4, etc.) run pretty well at 1080p with medium to high settings. I don't know US prices, but the best Y50 variant is with a 1080p "non-touch display", Core i7, GTX860M, 8GB RAM and 1TB SSHD, you should check that out!
I use a previous gen Y50 with 1T HHD+SSD cashe as a DJ laptop Didn't freeze or cut out on me and performs extremely well even in a °90 outdoor event. Not a gamer...but I love how it works as a laptop.
I have the Y50 with a 1080p display! It is fantastic, and I can live without 4k on a 15 inch laptop. Playing BF4 on almost all high settings with vsync is insane!
I just purchased the Y50 but with the full HD 1080p resolution instead of the one in this video. GTX860m (Maxwell) 4GB GDDR5 and 16GB of RAM. It is definitely worth your money. I'm not hating on MSI or ALIENWARE but seriously guys, they are over priced. Guys, go for the Lenovo Y50 with the 1080p display and you'll be saving a lot of money. Not to mention the gaming experience is more than what i expected. High settings at 1080p (MSAA off because it isn't necessary) running at 60 - 70 frames per second. It's an awesome gaming laptop for a VERY good price.
Hey. I was thinking about getting the 4k version but I couldnt decide if the 8gb of ram was enough from the 1080p version. I was wondering if you could tell me if it is enough. thx. Can you also tell me about your experience with it?
I have the 1080p version of the y50. Awesome laptop, and doesn't have any of the problems he mentioned, including having a 60Hz refresh rate. It runs nearly all games on high/ultra on full HD and I can easily recommend it!
Does the matte screen affect the quality of a blu ray movie playing in comparison to a glossy screen? I'm this close to pulling the trigger on one because currently until the 7th of January Lenovo has a great sale on plus a 3 year warranty and accidental plan is only $210 but I'm wondering if there are laptop with better 1080 screens out there. The gaming prowess is damn good for the price though.
Djonkie Bonk I don't think I'm picky or experienced enough to give an honest answer, but the matte screen seems fine for me. The gaming power for price made this thing worth it for me though.
I've been watching this channel for the longest time. Linus always does reviews or builds of the best and most expensive products. So I'm a graphic design student and can't really afford those really expensive pc and gpus. But now I can actually say I own something he reviewed on his channel I feel so proud 😊. This laptops ideal for me I'm a huge gamer as well so it runs BF4 great and Ai Ps In and all the other Adobe programs like a dream
I got the y50 a few weeks ago and its so ham with an I5 for only $899 us dollar on Amazon its a steal and I hooked up a second monitor and it kills I was hoping you would review this epic product
I have got this laptop in 2022 from my uncle. Some peeps were saying it's a touchscreen some are saying it's not. I am confused. As of now mine is not showing any support as such, I was concerned if it was any driver / software issue. Is it a fine machine for decent programming?
I would recommend the $899 matt screen (none 4k) version, have had it for a year and love it! Also beware lenovo's shipping and customer service, it took two weeks and multiple calls to get it.
I have the Y50-70 with 860M and Intel i7 4760k , 1TB of HDD and FullHD 15" Monitor. Perfect for gaming, even better with Geforce Experience from NVIDIA.
This exact laptop with a 1080p screen would be the best fit here. 1080 is plenty of resolution at that screen size and it would get a nice performance boost. Plus no black bars.
I love the brushed finish which is striking and I like the way you highlighted the ports with labels something small but for example someone who didn't know which was which it is well implicated I like this gaming notebook but I do still prefer a full desktop gaming pc however it is a very good product.
1080p model fixed nearly everything issued in this video apart from touch pad. Yes the display is a bt less beautiful but the price is also lower by nearly $300 and a screen replacement is $60.. (Canadian) so... I've been really enjoying gaming in 1080p since gaming in 4K never made sense anyways on a desktop. CUDA cores made rendering high poly 3D with multiple shades for university crazy fast compared to CPU rendering on my previous HP DV6 laptop. Its also super cool while gaming, not noisy and the onboard JBL speakers are fantastic! some of the best i've heard on a laptop. Only downsides on the Y50 i can really point out are the battery life and display.
Just a heads up, be aware that the non-4K version of this laptop has a terrible TN panel. People and hardware reviewers have reported that they can't even comfortably look at the screen because it looks washed-out and has a tight viewing angle. So, if you want to buy this, you should much as possible buy the 4K version, just because the IPS display eliminates this problem.
Is it worth getting? Watching movies, surfing the internet, running some mediumcore games (borderlands, sandboxes, open worlds) and probably editing / doing some school work.
I still game with this PC, only difference is mine came with a 1tb sshd Samsung mini. I can even play battlefield 1 with windows 10 and the 860m with the most up to date drivers. For both school and gaming this laptop was a good buy, even tho I'm always looking into building a more powerhouse desktop.
I like this sentence:"for less than a cost for buying a 4K IPS monitor, you can buy an entire notebook with one attached to it. The world is a funny place." Thumbs up for this!
+LinusTechTips the Lenovo Settings program can control the battery life by adjusting the speed and display of the laptop and I also discoverd that you CAN change the way it scales on the screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F11 at the same time

Awesome! I'm thinking to get it ... Would it run games like Bioshock Infinite smooth enough to enjoy the game in general, in your opinion? Not a hard gamer, but i like to game once in a while, and this is within my price range.
Brittney Yu I have it and I can would say yes.

+Taillow77 Hey I just bought the Y50 4k as a Christmas present and plan on using it as a gaming laptop! Are you just running your game in 1080p to get good frames? :)
thank god!!! i was praying that you'd review this... i've been looking at it but didn't know and i trust your reviews so thank you :)
I've had this laptop for 5 years. Still going strong. Just cleaned out the motherboard and put in some new thermal paste.
Hey hows it work with modern games?
@@hobo_warrior7777 the most modern game Ive tried is Fallout 4 and it runs at 8fps with low settings. I am able to play games like My Time at Portia with 40 fps with medium settings fine. But currently, if you want to play games with the best performance, get a desktop or you're gonna spend $1600+ on a laptop that will meet your needs for a year at best.
@@FredDurst00
something is wrong if fallout 4 runs at 8fps, i haven't received this laptop yet but i have seen performance benchmarks and every game runs at above 30-40 fps at 1080p even at low-medium
The keys seem flimsy, i had to replace 3 keys already ( and to replace entire keyboard its a hassle)

Thats cool .. how is it with you now bro i decided to take one of this with 960 4g i7 16ram 4k display need it for gaming and editing is it good?
1440p screen might have been a better option for this
Even that's too much. If you want to use your laptop as a high-res workstation, get a $150 24'' screen.
gamhacked Sounds great.
That looks amazing. :) The price is reasonable too.
Please review the lenovo y50 uhd 2015 edition.
The y700 is out now and it's a much improved version of the y50. Needs a review from Linus! I ordered mine last week.
Comments made previously on this video that prove my point:

"The $50 cheaper non-4k version has a better 4gig 860m which is maxwell so also gives much better battery life."
I BOUGHT IT AND GETTING IT TOMORROW !!!!::)PPPPP PP: P: P: P
hey NemesisTechBoy I want to buy this laptop and I have some query regarding this laptop so can you please reply ?
I can confirm that the 4GB VRAM for the GTX 860M GPU is based on Maxwell Architecture (Im assuming that's what your referring to when you said "some query regarding this laptop")
Well yea but also more
have you tried the new games like Wolfenstien (2014) and watch dogs?
have you tried to play them on 4k? how much fps are you getting? is the 48 htz screen any problem?
is it possible to increase the resolution in game as Nvidia has given support for hitman absolution and many such games for 4k so have you tried the last gen games on 4k?
and most important thing is this laptop worth for gaming?
4hrs of straight gaming? wow. what about gay gaming?
Four hours is a light day of gaming bro.
The world will understand one day...
i JUST got one of these for my little sister yesterday, an it doesn't game for 4 hours ( he also said that he could game for ONE hour on it an it last 4 hours doing other task)
have you ever heard of charging your computer while you're using it?
Wow, I thought Linus was progressive...
I have the 1080p y50 and I love it. The only downside is the display viewing angles, but if it is angled at the right spot it is fine.
Yeah, display really sucks, colours aren't quite right, viewing angles are really bad. However it's possible to change the display to a better one for $50-100, and after that I'd say it'd be a damn good notebook.
You can actually replace the display for an ips one for 100$
I ordered mine today from ebay for 110. I had no idea you can replace the screen until you told me.
Sure you can, but you should bear in mind that not any screen will work. Y50 has four screws to hold the display and it has 30 pin eDPs.
If I am actually able to have 4K 64hz with drivers downgrade I would go for 4K. Anyway what do you guys recomend?
My laptop has lost its corners, bleeds the backlight on an edge, and has lost all covers on its hinges. But damn, it still works 8 years later
I just watched this video today to bring me back to the time when I was entering into the foundation, and this laptop was the first laptop that I bought.
Batman Arkham City in 4K averages 22 frames per second. In the next resolution down (2048x1152) average is 44 fps. For the money it's a great value.
The yellow is a bit green as has been mentioned but it's not something I notice. I'm satisfied with the performance for editing. 4k gopro video looks fantastic but is still huge files and it takes time to process. For the money I'm very happy with the performance but might buy a WD black2 combo drive for more space. 256 gig ssd fills up fast with 4k video.
have you play anyother shooting games besides batman with no bars? with the fix i wonder if the fps will also be a limitation. thx
Makoto hayashi I have played Skyrim, and a couple other games (flight sims) and so far nothing has black boarders. Anytime the resolution is less than 2160p the screen is scaled to full screen. The scaling is pretty good, 1080p games look very sharp and crisp.

ATH-M50 is like Pre-school for Audiophiles.
For less that 115 to 120 dollars they are the best option, and I'm sorry but not everyone wants to drop 300-400 dollars on a pair of headphones.

After going through many brands of headphones I actually enjoy the PlayStation Gold headset as my daily drivers. They gel well with me and are very versatile wireless or wired. Many audiophiles are too snobby to give such a cheap can a try, lol.
I don't understand a 4k display on a gaming laptop, not enough power
You don't game in 4k, desktop/video in 4k looks better, but you downscale to 1080p for gaming.
There is no downscaling problems, it's 4 pixels to 1 so it's going to look fine. Gaming on 4k shouldn't be a selling point considering laptops aren't for gaming and the screen alone should be a prime selling point because 4k monitors are expensive anyways.
***** If the ratio is correct, it wouldn't look like shit, and it is just a 15.6 inch screen, so yeah. 4k downscale to 1080p is the correct ratio.
Plus the pixels are closer together, so it should look better?
Kavo-Thizzla
running a game in a tiny screen surrounded by black bars (like at 6:04) doesn't seem better to me. Until they get those drivers fixed, this doesn't seem like the best option for gaming right now.

Since when has Linus reviewed an Apple Product on the LTT Channel?
It's very unlikely he will because I rarely see him review any notebooks from Apple, except smartphones of course
There's a boatload of MBP reviews across the internet and a lot of people love them. So yeah, it falls into those Audio Technicas. They are good, and people know they are good. But Linus wants to review a product that appeals to his viewers.

Any thing else looks like shit, I couldn't stand using that.
I second this. My friend has one. I played on it. Now I have one... best $270 I have ever spent.
Yeah, I'm never getting one of those then
I have one as well, you speak the truth

I agree his attitude stinks. But at least he's not trying to be funny this time.
If anything he goes through the trouble of reviewing the things that are less known.
Linus,
There are a lot of laptop GPUs these days. Could you make a video where you compare notebook gpu's? (Also with a few desktop gpu's)
880m = underclocked 770
860m = 750ti.
Notebookcheck.net lists a ton of game benchmarks for every mobile GPU out there.
HailgodMC yep that's pretty much accurate.. is the 870m like the gtx 760 desktop gpu ? just curious....
drifter4training nope, they are completely different chips.
oh ok....what about comparing to the 600m series ? many thanks and appreciated...
I just purchased the Lenovo Y50-Y70 which comes with 16GBRam 1TB 8GBSSD Nvidia 4GB GTX 960, I'm excited :)

thats weird, im on a y700 and it doesn't come in 4k
Dude you right! me too :( It have too also 4k resolution in desktop but i have an idea to fix that.
Go to Intel graphics, go to Display and you will see in the categories: "Custom display" And your'e type the 4k resolution: 3840*2160 and apply.
Wait! You have to restart pc in then you will see in display settings the 4k resolution :D
Maxim Beigel nope, i didnt buy the 4k model because it wasnt an option on their website
+yamaan93 Look, you don't need any website or something. if you want to run your lenovo PC on 4k resolution or any resolution you want. just add the resolutiom in Intel propeties> Display>Custom resolution. That's it! :)
Maxim Beigel the screen isnt 4k, when i bought the laptop their was no 4k option
+yamaan93 Because, they didn't added the resolution. You can add this resolution in yourself
But when it comes.....
asdfrozen I agree. Lenovo's probably experimenting and market testing with the new 4K displays
This is marketed as a multimedia / casual gaming notebook. a 750ti equivalent is no slough.

Linus should review a Lenovo Y510P I got one and its pretty good.
Y510P is an older version
Me too :P
sundhaug92 Diffrent models though. The y510 is basically the best gaming laptop around 1000$ if you're only looking for raw horsepower.
***** But the Y510 will soon be phased oiut in favor for the Y50.

Yessssss I asked for this!!!!! Thank you Linus!
great review and positive conclusion! Thanks Linus
I have this laptop with the 1080p display and I can honestly say it's amazing for the value, one of the best laptops for the price.
I never heard of the Y50 thanks For sharing Linus!
I use a previous gen Y50 with 1T HHD+SSD cashe as a DJ laptop
Didn't freeze or cut out on me and performs extremely well even in a °90 outdoor event.
Rohan Suri i got the 8 gb model and bought an 8gb dimm for it, its cheap an easy to replace and you will never need more than 12 gb for a laptop.
Ok. Thanks 😀
I just ordered mine, how long did your's take to arrive?
i got mine at Bestbuy so no shipping... sorry
Agh man! I was expecting you made a review of the 1080p screen model, though. anyway, great review, as always.
The only thing holding me from getting one is the screen. In which country did you buy yours ?
Djonkie Bonk I don't think I'm picky or experienced enough to give an honest answer, but the matte screen seems fine for me. The gaming power for price made this thing worth it for me though.

I just ordered this today, I'm so excited! :D
linus your videos are good, your tech tips are on-point, and you have good showmanship. That's why I like watching your videos.
I got this a couple weeks ago, it's pretty fantastic.
You are THE BEST reviewer I've seen on youtube:)
I have Y50-70 with 1080p, 960m, i7-4720hq, 8GB ram and 240gb ssd. I bought it for 850€. It's a beast, not a single problem.
really mine was the same specs but video card 4gb and it costed me 1040
+Flasher XMan yea, mine too is 4gb, i got it from german Amazon
Ranor80 Z Got it from eshop cy
I've been watching this channel for the longest time. Linus always does reviews or builds of the best and most expensive products. So I'm a graphic design student and can't really afford those really expensive pc and gpus. But now I can actually say I own something he reviewed on his channel I feel so proud 😊. This laptops ideal for me I'm a huge gamer as well so it runs BF4 great and Ai Ps In and all the other Adobe programs like a dream
How did that go?
I'm newer to LinusTech... Linus said "massive raging hard on" Lifetime subscriber just for that ;)
I got the y50 a few weeks ago and its so ham with an I5 for only $899 us dollar on Amazon its a steal and I hooked up a second monitor and it kills I was hoping you would review this epic product
I loved that laptop for the 3 years I had it It served me well for my first years teaching 3d modeling at a local digital art school.
I have got this laptop in 2022 from my uncle. Some peeps were saying it's a touchscreen some are saying it's not. I am confused. As of now mine is not showing any support as such, I was concerned if it was any driver / software issue.
Is it a fine machine for decent programming?
@@anubhavforall the 4k model had a touch screen if I remember correctly
Pretty happy with my Y50. Only downside really is the colors. Yellow =green, orange = brown. And Lenovo doesn't care :)
Lenovo is like the best kept secret in gaming laptops! I have the Y410P, which I go over the Y50 because of the DVD drive and removable battery =D
I would recommend the $899 matt screen (none 4k) version, have had it for a year and love it! Also beware lenovo's shipping and customer service, it took two weeks and multiple calls to get it.
I'm not sure about this laptop, but I did pick up a Lenovo Y410p when it was about $400 off. Definitely worth it.
Bought the Y50-70 about a month ago. After replacing the screen from TN to IPS its a great little laptop for the price you pay
how much?
it was around £700 after replacing the screen
I still have mine for 5 years now
Just a heads up, be aware that the non-4K version of this laptop has a terrible TN panel. People and hardware reviewers have reported that they can't even comfortably look at the screen because it looks washed-out and has a tight viewing angle. So, if you want to buy this, you should much as possible buy the 4K version, just because the IPS display eliminates this problem.
Is it worth getting? Watching movies, surfing the internet, running some mediumcore games (borderlands, sandboxes, open worlds) and probably editing / doing some school work.
congrats for your baby LInus!
We know about it but we like when you review and then we make a decision if we should buy it. Thanks Linus
Linus had another Baby! Congratulations!
I like this sentence:"for less than a cost for buying a 4K IPS monitor, you can buy an entire notebook with one attached to it. The world is a funny place." Thumbs up for this!
could you please do a re review of this laptop and please tell us if the problems have been fixed and if it is still worth the money
+LinusTechTips the Lenovo Settings program can control the battery life by adjusting the speed and display of the laptop and I also discoverd that you CAN change the way it scales on the screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F11 at the same time
Great review pal. Don't let the trolls control what you review. If you do, they will simply start complaining on every review you do, and where would that leave you and we, your adoring public? :)
These reasons are why I bought mine in 1080p :)
I play MW2 on 90FPS and sometimes above 100
Nice review Linus, I would love if you could review the Lenovo y40. It is a laptop with relatively high demand and very little coverage. I am a proud owner of this laptop and would like others to have more info about it.
