How to Replace Landcruiser 1HD-T Big End Bearing Shells | The Issue is REAL!

  • In this video Jafffa Adventures details how to replace the big end bearing shells in a Toyota Landcruiser 1HD-T diesel motor. These big end bearings have a history of premature failure and in this video Matt, a qualified engine reconditioner, determines if this is the case with this particular Landcruiser 80 Series. This Landcruiser 80 Series has been regularly serviced and has 80,000km on the motor since a complete rebuild.
    In addition to the big end bearings, we also replace the timing belt and tensioner, the harmonic balancer, and the remainder of the drive belts.
    Of course while doing the work, we also manage to have a lot of fun and laughs.
    Be sure to like, share and subscribe because that seems to be what every other TH-camr says and I don't want to get left out!

    1) I used to own a 2006 GXL TD Auto 100 series with a 1HDFTE along with a 2006 79 with a 1HZ. Both purchased new. I liked both vehicles and engines. One towny and one worky.
    They were serviced by Toyota every 10k and by me every 5000km. Never burnt any oil and never broke down. Both were sold at 190k. Today my V8 burns oil and makes the sump oil black very quickly. My 2 old Toyota's referred to above always had golden oil. It's not that I mind buying the oil - It's the fact that Toyota diesels are not supposed to burn oil. We've had diesel cruisers in the family since the 70's and they never used oil. These new V8's burn oil, the filter is hard to get to and the starter motor needs replacing all the time because they don't like dust, mud and water.
    2) Hey, one technique I use all the time to take off oil filters is a rag and a steel bar/screwdriver. It's simple as. Just wrap the rag around the filter and put in the screw driver and twist. Proceed as nature intended. Easy.
    3) People say Go well Go Shell but I say Go First Class or Stay at Home.

    • @JafffaAdventures
      @JafffaAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question Sterling. I’m no expert but if it is a knock at the bottom end the next thing I would check is your oil pressure. You may need an additional gauge that actually displays the pressure and then compare this against the factory specs. If it’s down on oil pressure I would still be suspicious of the bearings. Just a thought anyway mate. Cheers🤔👍

    Got to say I'm pretty shocked with the condition of that last bearing. I wouldn't think that you would get a failure like that within 300,000km of a rebuild let alone sub 100,000km. Surely that has to be some sort of bearing manufacturer issue as Toyota would of had a warranty for longer than 100,000km surely. Would a race bearing like ACL be the best option?? Do you know the origin of the bearings that were pulled out??

    • @JafffaAdventures
      @JafffaAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t know the origin of the bearing pulled out but I do know this is very common on 1HDT’s. I’ve done several now, same issue. If I owned one I would be replacing them every 100K regardless but this is only based on my experience. Go well mate👍😎

      I thought I had read that this wasn’t much of an issue with the 92 or later models? Also how did he know which bearings to get? I was under the impression that you would need to take it apart and verify bearings then order because of there being different ones for different yr models. Just trying to learn, as I’m wanting to do this to my 92. Also great video, second time watching it 👍

    • @JafffaAdventures
      @JafffaAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers mate. I have not heard of different sized bearings for different year models, that’s a new one on me. It would certainly surprise me if it were true, a 1HDT is a 1HDT. However if your research is telling you otherwise, then fair enough. What we did NOT know at the time was if the bearings in the engine were oversized or not. We took a chance and jagged it. If we would have got the wrong ones a quick exchange at the parts store would have had us sorted. Cheers 👍😎

  • @DiHandley

    So I would have thought that if a bearing has delaminated the crank would be damaged in some way or other??

    • @JafffaAdventures
      @JafffaAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question David.
      If the delamination is advanced, absolutely. We caught this right at the beginning with only one small fleck that you saw in the video. Also the bearing shell surface material is much softer than the crank journal. That being the case, no damage.
      If you take it to extremes, it damages the journal from the underlying shell material, plus typically a drop in oil pressure as the clearances blow out. Cheers😎👍

      Hi Billy, great question mate. In our case the owner knew that the engine had been rebuilt and he had the paper work showing that the crank had been ground and oversized bearings used. If your engine has not been opened up, then it will have the stock factory size bearings. If your engine has been rebuilt and you don’t know if the crank has had any work, the only option is to pull the bearings out and have a look on the back sides of the shells. If they are oversized it will have the size stamped on the back sides of the shells. I trust this answers your question Billy👍

      With the top shells in the con rod, you just push the piston up the bore a couple of inches and you can access them easily. I think we detailed this in the video, but I could be wrong too🤔
      Yes we definitely plastigauged the first she’ll we put on. Set in the plastigauge, torqued the cap down with the new bearings, then removed the cap and took the measurement. The first one was good so we took the rest as being ok without using plastigauge. I would not recommend just sending them without taking a least one reading, a mistake here could cost you your motor😬

    Its not common at all its false information that carried on because a few 91 models had dodgy big ends in them from factory they can be replaced with good aftermarket big ends and later model 1hdts had a new version of big ends put in them

      I’ve had very close experience with three 1HDT’s and all had the same problem, delamination of the big end bearings. For a few dollars and a couple of hours work, I would NEVER take the chance, it’s just not worth it. You and others may disagree, and that’s cool but it’s not for me. Have a great weekend, Cheers😎👍
