Oh my GOD you've never heard anything Katamari?! I can't WAIT until you hear Lonely Rolling Star! This game series has some of the best music in all of gaming, and Lonely Rolling Star might be the darling of the entire series's repetoire.
That song is honestly still one of my absolute favorites from the series. So freaking cheerful for no reason whatsoever. *especially* considering the lyrics, hah
Katamari Damacy was one of the most defining games that changed the way I think about videogames as an art form. It's a game about connection, it's a game about forgiving your father, it's a game about embracing positivity even in the face of meaninglessness, and it's a game about rolling things up into a ball and exploding them. When I finished the game completely back in like 2005, I had to go stand in the shower and weep because now I could never again experience a part of such a moving piece of art with fresh eyes. I could never again experience it for the first time.
14:40 "Everybody's saying that the Scatman stutters but doesn't ever stutter when he sings..... but what you don't know I'm gonna tell you right now that the stutter and the scat are the same thing....yo I'm the Scatman""
katarmari is SUCH a fun weekend or single night game, its short, its fun, its silly and it such a novel concept, and its not really hard so you can plow through it with no inhibitions. Katamari on the rocks is kind of the theme song, and on the rocks kind signifies the easy listening nature. Theres an on the swing, an on the funk, on the moog, on the rhodes and on the wings, and most of them are more obvious than on the rocks to be fair
Katamari basically means ''to clump'', which is a fair description of the gameplay, as that is what you do. This series is full of great music, like ''The Moon and the Prince'', "Everlasting Love'', and ''Lonely Rolling Star''. I'd also recommend to check the series out, as the first two games in the series got Remakes that are out on basically everything, and it is really unique.
'it's like a fever dream' - yea that could basically be a review of the series 😂 there's not too much story to the game, so it's easy to just tell you the story is based off a surprisingly simple premise: The King of the Cosmos (thumbnail #2) got drunk and knocked the stars out of the sky. So you, the tiny prince, have to roll up a bunch of random things so they can replace the stars good ol' dad knocked down. And yes, that was mostly Japanese lyrics until they went full crazy bus
Katamari has a legendary soundtrack, especially the first entry. As I understand it (other comments will probably clarify), the composer specifically sought out formerly popular Japanese artists that had fallen out of the limelight to contribute to the OST, hence the retro-pop vibe to the whole thing.
You nailed the 60s feel! There's cutscenes in the game that are definitely reminiscent of educational/propaganda posters that were prominent in 60s Japan.
I'm glad you also did the original version! I put in the version from "We ♥Katamari" because I was trying to think of what's the most WTF song I can suggest and of course Katamari came to mind.
The second one gets so much funnier when you understand the Japanese, because he's just riffing on the word "katamari" and the concept of rolling things up and at some point he just starts singing "Well, I'm tired now, can't think of anything," etc. Hilarious track
I got all achievements in the We Love Katamari remaster a month ago and I can't recommend the series enough. The original is 20 years old and it feels as special to this day, as it did back then. Everything about the series is weird but also really amazing, the gameplay, the artstyle, the music, the story and characters, it's just so much fun and somehow nostalgic, even though I never played them as a kid.
Smooth McGroove did recently start making new content a few months back! Not quite at the frequency he did before, but any amount of McGroove is better than none at all!
So, not fluent in Japanese, but for the We Love Katamari version, the singer seems to basically go on a ramble about "What is 'katamari'?" and trying to figure out what it really means kinda like how you would think about something in your mind. "What is X?" "Oh X is Y" "But if X is Y then..." kind of thought process.
Everytime I hear the beginning of the song it puts a smile on my face. The soundtrack to the whole series is worth a listening too specially Cherry Blossom Color Season. That track alone brings me to tears everytime, so beautiful.
You cant tell me that someone was on something while making the katamari games, the games are such random fever dreams of over the top chaos, it must of been so fun to work on these games.
A re-release of the original KD is available on Steam. I picked up the initial release way back on PS2 when it came out as a discount title for $20. I looked at the packaging and thought, "These people are on acid - but hell, it's twenty bucks, I'll give it a shot." Having played strengthened my initial impression, and I have never regretted it. The rest of the music is amazing, too, and includes songs that are tributes to styles such as Big Band and vocalists such as Sinatra. Look for the "Katamari Fortissimo Damacy" soundtrack disc.
Let's gooooooo! I love this game, and all the music that comes with it. I remember the hype that surrounded this game when it first came out in North America - They just showed footage of gameplay and some bizarre cut-scenes with that song playing in the background. It was wild. Have you ever had a moment where you could basically understand what you were seeing, but still kept asking yourself what the hell is going on? That's what it was like seeing that ad. I honestly feel like the soundtrack for this game is seriously underrated. It's so diverse, but nothing seems out of place. I highly recommend "Lonely Rolling Star", "Crimson Rose and Gin Tonic", "Que Sera Sera", "The Moon and The Prince", and "Walking on a Star". I know that's a lot, but I actually left out a few others favorites like "You Are Smart" and "Katamari Mambo"... In fact, just listen to the whole soundtrack. It's worth it. EDIT: I just realized that the second song was along the same lines as Soken singing "La-Hee". It's the shit-post version of the original.
Now for Lonely Rolling Star! ❤ EDIT for Jesse: I've just learned that Consouls have on their channel several of Katamari tunes, Lonely Rolling Star among them.
Yeeeeeeaah! This song is iconic as hell, cause while I know a bit about this game I'm not super familiar with the whole soundtrack. So I was just thinking as I saw this video: "Katamari On The Rocks? Is that that one song?" and wouldn't you know... LAAAAAAA LALALA LALA LA LA LALA LA LALA LAAAAAAA
I'm guessing that Lonely rolling star is the other request because it's god tier. But like, it's hard to find a single track in this ost that isn't. I'm gonna pick Katamari Mambo after Lonely rolling star as my favorite, it's so... human. It's actually incredibly suggestive if you know what it says or translate it, but in such a dorky, lovable way
Also if you ever look up what the lyrics are in Lonely Rolling Star, just prepared to be sad for awhile. But it's ok because that song has two sequels, Sayonara rolling star, and Lonely Rolling No More that bring it back around from later games.
The mountain is Mt. Fuji. Its the tallest mountain in Japan and extremely prominent and important in the culture, myths and arts in Japan. You'll see it a ton in Japanese traditional art, often in the background
I loved the first game when I played it in college, and the soundtrack just blew me away, so much character and enjoyability. I made my own rendition of another song, Que Sera Sera, off the soundtrack. I pretty much 100% d the whole game except for a glitch that wouldn't allow me to get a specific present in level 6 or something. I never played the second one and heard that terrible a capella rendition, but I saw my sister playing it which was what inspired me to buy the first one to play for myself. I also watched her play some of the 3rd one for the PS3 and it wasn't as good, to me 1 and 2 looked like the gems of the franchise
Ever since I subscribed, I've been shocked that Katamari hasn't been on this channel yet! The first two Katamari games are easily in the running for my favorite game OSTs, right up there with FF7, Castlevania SotN, and Castlevania Curse of Darkness, that's probably my top 4. I reckon the only reason anyone forgets to name them as the one of best OSTs is due to all the vocals, which isn't a very traditional game-like.
I remember reading that the creator wanted the ost to be so catchy, is almost like a curse. And it succeeded. Listen this song once and it will never leave your brain lol
Just do an hours long react to the entire Katamari series OST cause it's 100% fire feel good tracks. Also, the word "katamari" basically refers to a "ball of things", so that's why the game is, yeah, just rolling things into a ball (from insects, to people, to houses, to monsters, to countries, to planets and to the entire solar system, literally lol).
I haven't played Katamari yet, but I've known its music for a long time now. I remember the first time I heard some, I was listening to some playlist or other while doing something else and a Katamari song popped up and had me pulling the playlist up to see what the heck I was listening to because it was so different from anything that had been coming up to that point. "the whole thing sounds like a fever dream" The game looks like one XD!. They and the music seem so vibrant and cheerful though
Katamari Damacy is a very fun game, and the music reflects it perfectly. Every song is unique sounding and fun to listen to. I really recommend you listening to Katamary Mambo Syndrome Mix :)
My favorite Katamari track is for sure Cherry Blossom Color Season, very different feel to this, with a children's choir. But equally genuine and heartwarming.
In this case "on the Rocks" is basically saying it's the rock version. There's also Katamari on the Swing. Also I think this predates Smooth McGroove, and yes he started making videos again.
on the We Love Katamari version, the singer is both freestyling and ranting/complaining throughout the song about all the shenanigans in game as The Prince (player character) is rolling up (clumpling together) stuff from the smallest and inconsequential things to cars, cows, buildings, mountains, etc. and so yeah "it's like PTSD" but it was all in jest for the sillies
Its basically an arcade style score attack game with various levels, where you collect objects into a junk ball in order to make your ball capable of grabbing increasingly larger things. I want to say the original was a surprise hit, but then they tried to force it into an annual franchise for like 5 years. Its currently making something of a resurgence with remasters being released with several years between them.
One of the main reasons people love Katamari is the music. I really hope people have suggested masterpieces like Lonely Rolling Star or Katamaritaino (Roll me in). God, Katamaritaino is an experience. Oh, and yeah, Katamari pretty much just means a clump of stuff. You roll a ball around and, well, make a giant clump of stuff which then gets sent to space to repopulate it with stars. Yup. This game's charm is off the charts.
This game reminds me of earthbound in which the creators are fans of a certain era of music. Except this dials it up to 100%. I absolutely love this ost.
Since you talked about him in the video, Scatman John is one of my favorite artists ever, and i highly recommend anyone who hasn't checked out his discography (he's got more than 2 songs, and they're all amazing!!!) So go give it a listen!!!
Mmmm, the greatest song in history. Also fun fact, they made a specific version of this song for the last level of the game that lasts 12 minutes (half of the length of the final level.) It loops once and that's the end of the game.
I've never played a Katamari game, doesn't seem my style but I've heard parts of the first one a ton over the years from TH-cam videos using it as background music or as a joke about large rolling objects.
Katamari is certainly a unique franchise. It is ironic since it's creator, Keita Takahashi, is very vocal against franchise's and prefers to do new projects instead. He left the series after We Love Katamari because of that mindset. The games are oddly addictive with moon logic as you play as the Prince of All Cosmos making new stars and planets after your father, the King of All Cosmos, destroyed it all in a drunken bender of destruction by rolling up anything you can find to make new ones. It's all very weird, tongue and cheek, and very addictive. The whole soundtrack is amazing and really iconic. Basically every track is a banger.
Believe it or not, the lyrics are not giberish. He sings about doing a Katamari, but then he start to question, what really is a "katamari" what does the act of "katamariing" means. And then he says let's try to Katamari, and that he made it, he did a Katamari.
I don't think Smooth McGroove was that inspirational for game music... Maybe for acapella covers... I'm not aware of him being that popular in Japan either... But either way, if the acapella version was in the original release of the game, I think it predates Smooth McGroove's channel by 5 or more years... On top of this, I don't think it's that crazy for creative music types to be interested in acapella music before that and they may even arrive at it by accident... I'm pretty sure I've heard of composers and the like sketching out music using recorded vocal tracks, especially those more familiar with vocals and not so much with instruments... Although in this case I think they were likely doing the acapella for fun. .... But hey, Smooth Mcgroove is great, so I wouldn't blame them if they were inspired by him lol... Also possible that he might have been inspired by this track, although I'm not sure if he was aware of it or not... I forget if he ever did covers of these games... And can't be bothered to check right now ^_^;;
Disgrace is an awfully strong word for something very clearly orchestrated and engineered. It's meant to sound like a jalopy rumbling down a hill and breaking down - it's an experience.Just like the whole franchise.
Katamari Damacy is "It started as a joke, but we kept going till we had a finished product" the game.
A game where you roll a ball and stick small objects, toys, bricks, animal, people, cars, buildings and throw it into space and turn it into a star.
All while enjoying the screams of the people when you roll them up. The screams of joy and rapture!
Also, your father is the size of a planet and speaks entirely in record scratches.
VAULTING BOXES, PENCILS, ERASERS, POSTCARDS, RAMEN, ROBOTS, COWS, SHEEP, THIS BOY, THAT GIRL, MOMS AND DADS, BICYCLES, MOTORBIKES, HOMES, BUILDINGS, RAINBOWS, CLOUDS, ISLANDS, *HOPES AND DREAAMSSS* oohhhhhh~
Oh my GOD you've never heard anything Katamari?!
I can't WAIT until you hear Lonely Rolling Star! This game series has some of the best music in all of gaming, and Lonely Rolling Star might be the darling of the entire series's repetoire.
Lonely Rolling Star is an absolute banger but my favorite is the very underrated Katamaritaino.
@@sverd3901 ANGEL RAIN is also a fantastic one
@@fallingstars5683and don't forget Disco Prince! 🕺🪩🤴
That song is honestly still one of my absolute favorites from the series. So freaking cheerful for no reason whatsoever. *especially* considering the lyrics, hah
Truly one of the best osts of all time.
"I feel like I'm on drugs."
Yep, that's what playing Katamari is like.
Literally, that's how the King of Cosmos destroyed the universe (again)
Katamari Damacy was one of the most defining games that changed the way I think about videogames as an art form. The composer for a lot of the Katamari games is Yuu Miyake! He's done Tekken and Ridge Racer.
RIDGE RACER!?

Someone please request Rolling Star, Jesse NEEDS to experience more of this glorious soundtrack!
katarmari is SUCH a fun weekend or single night game, its short, its fun, its silly and it such a novel concept, and its not really hard so you can plow through it with no inhibitions.

Yeah. I heard they spent more of the budget on the music then the rest of the game.
You nailed the 60s feel! There's cutscenes in the game that are definitely reminiscent of educational/propaganda posters that were prominent in 60s Japan.
seems also inspired by the 1968 film "Yellow Submarine"

He's very clearly improvising which makes it sooo much better

Smooth McGroove actually does! He started releasing new videos last year after an extended hiatus.
I got all achievements in the We Love Katamari remaster a month ago and I can't recommend the series enough. The original is 20 years old and it feels as special to this day, as it did back then. Mentioned in this video;
Scatman John - Scatman

Best song to ever exist lol
Smooth McGroove did recently start making new content a few months back! Not quite at the frequency he did before, but any amount of McGroove is better than none at all!
Also, I’m pretty sure both games predate TH-cam, so I don’t think smooth had anything to do with it hahaha.
Whoever requested this knows exactly what they are doing
The _Katamari_ series has some seriously excellent music.
I love this series, it's so wild. Your dad goes on a drunken bender and destroys the galaxy and it's up to you to put all the stars back in the sky.
This is such a legendary video game song, it's wild and wacky, just like the games themselves
5:13 I love this part where they repeat that section of the song except the drums keep going instead of stopping
So, not fluent in Japanese, but for the We Love Katamari version, the singer seems to basically go on a ramble about "What is 'katamari'?" and trying to figure out what it really means kinda like how you would think about something in your mind. "Feels like I'm on drugs" is exactly the mood of the entire franchise.
You cant tell me that someone was on something while making the katamari games, the games are such random fever dreams of over the top chaos, it must of been so fun to work on these games.

Katamari On The Swing is conspicuously missing.
I think that's probably my favorite one, I went for the most WTF factor rather than my favorite one!
Now for Lonely Rolling Star! ❤
EDIT for Jesse: I've just learned that Consouls have on their channel several of Katamari tunes, Lonely Rolling Star among them.
I can only imagine his reaction to Katamari on the Funk.

The mountain is Mt. Fuji. Its the tallest mountain in Japan and extremely prominent and important in the culture, myths and arts in Japan. You'll see it a ton in Japanese traditional art, often in the background
I think these were the first soundtracks from games I ever downloaded as a kid, all the tracks are so catchy and fun and still bang today
BEST OST EVER
I loved the first game when I played it in college, and the soundtrack just blew me away, so much character and enjoyability. You really need to review Katamari on the Funk and the full 10 minutes one, it is one of those you can tell was a ton of fun to make.
The most whimsical and silly song to listen to while rolling screaming people and animals into a ball to fire into space.
The mountain in the background is Fuji
Ever since I subscribed, I've been shocked that Katamari hasn't been on this channel yet!
The first two Katamari games are easily in the running for my favorite game OSTs, right up there with FF7, Castlevania SotN, and Castlevania Curse of Darkness, that's probably my top 4. "the whole thing sounds like a fever dream" The game looks like one XD!. They and the music seem so vibrant and cheerful though
From que sera sera to lonely rolling star, I love how varied the katamari ost is while still consistently being only bangers
Katamari Damacy is exactly as insane as you think it is, and it is WACKY and HELLA FUN. The reroll remakes are totally worth playing.
this song just makes people happy.
"Katamari On The Swing" would be a suitable follow-up to this.
This game is a wild fever dream of positive zanny energy.
on the We Love Katamari version, the singer is both freestyling and ranting/complaining throughout the song about all the shenanigans in game as The Prince (player character) is rolling up (clumpling together) stuff from the smallest and inconsequential things to cars, cows, buildings, mountains, etc. and so yeah "it's like PTSD" but it was all in jest for the sillies

oh yeah, and I guess EVERY other track too. lol
First one makes you smile, second one makes you grin and in the end confused. :'D
"The whole thing sounds like a fever dream."
Yeah.
Oh god Katamari is great. Definitely listen to more tracks
KATAMARY SOUNDTRACK IS SO GOOD! It's absolute joyful nonsense JUST like the game! CHUU CHUU CHU CHU CHU CHU CHU CHUU CHUU
I've never played a Katamari game, doesn't seem my style but I've heard parts of the first one a ton over the years from TH-cam videos using it as background music or as a joke about large rolling objects.

On the stray comment of Smooth McGroove, he just recently returned to youtube and started uploading stuff. How long though who know?
Katamari music is amazing
as expected of a game where you roll up balls and then throw them. the ost is catchy.
Can't have been inspired by Smooth McGroove since We love katamari came out in 2005, lol!
By the way, Smooth McGroove went on hiatus, but now he's back!
Jesse wants to go listen to Scatman John, but I'm off to listen to Katamari on the Swing
That second song is a mess 🤣
Katamari + Zaza chillstream when??

I'm pretty sure I've heard of composers and the like sketching out music using recorded vocal tracks, especially those more familiar with vocals and not so much with instruments... Although in this case I think they were likely doing the acapella for fun.
.... But hey, Smooth Mcgroove is great, so I wouldn't blame them if they were inspired by him lol... Also possible that he might have been inspired by this track, although I'm not sure if he was aware of it or not... I forget if he ever did covers of these games... And can't be bothered to check right now ^_^;;

I feel like im the only one that cares less about the main themes of katamari
t'as rien compris tant que t'as pas roulé une crisse de grosse boule dans le cosmos.
The second one was not katamari damashi. it was a disgrace to all sound.
this attitude you have towards sound is more of a disgrace than that wonderful performance lmao, music never asked for your pedestals
Disgrace is an awfully strong word for something very clearly orchestrated and engineered. It's meant to sound like a jalopy rumbling down a hill and breaking down - it's an experience.Just like the whole franchise.
All of the katamari games and music are a straight fever dream but also a vibe.
