I love how everyone accepts that Jack Black is killing it, but I wish more people would acknowledge how good Keagan's voice is; I literally wouldn't have even known it was him if I didn't already know the casting.

It also helps that Jack black is no slouch when it comes to voicing animated characters. He's had years of experience and knows how to bring life to the characters he voices.
Chris on the other hand; I don't remember hearing anything about him being in an animated film or even game. He's basically the main film actor whose now playing a movie with only his voice. I'll reserve judgment until we hear the full extent of whether he's improved and has an accent beyond just Chris Pratt or not.
Keegan-Michael Key and Charlie Day shouldn't be underestimated either since the two are pretty good themselves with their voices and I trust their abilities to play these roles.
Don't forget Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek/Magikoopa, it's a pretty fitting voice for a character like that!

Jack Blacks first line I couldn’t even tell it was him, but Chris’s Mario I can tell straight away that it’s Pratt with some weird mix of Martinet’s Italian accent and a Brooklyn accent
For some reason most of us expected bowser to sound goofy but he’s good except for Chris who is exactly what I thought
Ikr. I've heard Jack Black a few times, but they all sounded like Po or Jack. This is the first time I've truly heard a different person, the one called Bowser.
He gave it a little bit of an accent at the end. Not only would it be hard for some people, especially some parents that aren't gamers or hear stereotypical italian accents, find it hard to understand but some might call it racist stereotyping. It's a kids movie for kids. Don't expect masterful writing or super acting.

I love the moment Mario came into frame, everyone around the world collectively went "oh no..."
This trailer was definitely one of those times where everyone was upset that their guess was right.

I think as long as Chris is given some good lines he’ll be okay. Jack Black tho, he absolutely nailed it as Bowser.
Agreed. In my opinion, the biggest hurdle this movie will need to overcome is making the character of Mario compelling. Most Nintendo protagonists are blank-slate characters with minimal personality traits besides the standard heroic ones: some combination of brave, determined, upbeat, etc. That approach works for video games, but you need your main character to have an intriguing story in a movie or show. Having Mario (and Luigi) seemingly be from the real world and thrust into the Mushroom Kingdom (sort of like an inverse of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020) could be a decent starting point. I'm curious to see where they go with this.
I really hope so.
Cause i don't want to hear any cringe lines like they sometimes do in the Despicable Me and Minions movies.
Or worst,The Dr.Seuss's The Lorax and The Grinch animated movies.

Get this: what if Mario is just a regular plumber isekai'd from the real world so now he's slowly going insane. By the end of the movie he forgets everything about his real life and only remembers his name. His accent gradually shifts, and they end the movie with a perfect "ITTSA ME MAAAARIO" as he decides not to go back and stay in the Mushroom Kingdom. I'm probably wrong, but one can dream....:(

Jack did an incredible job as Bowser, just loved his prestation a lot, which make the contrast even bigger....
I wasn't expecting anything good or bad from Chris but omg this last sentence!!! Problem of it just being his voice asside this was just soooo flat! He is supposed to be a hero going to save the world but sounds like a teenage having to do a chore with their parents asking him to be a little more entousiast about it (it's the best image I thought to describe it).
It's not often that I'm more exited to watch content in French than VO honnestly; Pierre Tessier is a very good VA and even if I prefer a little more Jack's performance, Christophe Lemoine is very good and did a great job too on Bowser.
...A hero? Dude's literally a regular plumber from Brooklyn. It IS a chore for him. Why would he sound heroic when he wants none of this???

If you listen to how he says the word "here", they're apparently going to go with him faking a Brooklyn accent, like Mario had prior to Martinet in stuff like the cartoons. At least I think it was Brooklyn...

It sounds sort of like Martinet’s accent at the start but then at the end sounds kind of Brooklyn. He was supposed to be working on the accent with Martinet, the director, and Miyamoto/Nintendo. However we’re still 6 months out from release so this might not be the final version of the voice and they just used what they had come up with so far for the trailer

This is at least a "teaser" as opposed to the actual trailer, so at best they just used crappy lines for the trailer, and at worst this is what he'll sound like the entire movie.
it's funny, at 1:48 I saw bowser's face and thought "wow, bowser looks like jack black for some reason" then they immediately brought up that the VA was jack black. I didn't even know who was casted for this, I don't really follow nintendo stuff

I did not expect Bowser to sound like that, but it's a great take regardless. Slightly more sophisticated and smug than what I was picturing in my mind, but it works well. Props to Jack Black. Similar, Keagan-Michael Key's Toad is good - it is fun, easygoing and has a slight screechiness to it, but not enough to make me want to claw out my ears. Kevin Michael Richardson's Kamek is fundamentally _perfect,_ it's the ideal voice for the character. The penguin king by Khary Payton sounds super fun. And from what little grunts we heard of Luigi Charlie Day seems to make it work well, too.
And then there's Chris Pratt. Good lord, is there Chris Pratt.

It's a good thing that Chris's voice work can easily be fixed. I think though that this might go from Live Action to Mushroom Kingdom and that this smoment is the end of Acr 1. which is why is voice is realistic sounding. i could be wrong though but I think that is what might happen. If it is straight cartoon all the way through then chris should ham it up a bit. - good thing that stuff can be fixed.
They've nailed Bowser, Toad sounds good enough to be taken as a more serious character for a movie, while still retaining some of that goofy charm, but tbh Mario's voice is so iconic that I was probably going to be disappointed no matter what Chris Pratt's performance was like.
I hope Luigi speaks like in that sex ed. tape, that would really match the energy of Chris Pratt as Chris Pratt with a fake Brooklyn accent.

I've seen tons of praise for Jack Black and some for Keegan, but can we talk about Kevin Michael Richardson? I know he's a voice actor and was guaranteed to be good, but I also thought I knew what his voice sounded like. When I heard him as Kamek, I had to double check to make sure I was thinking of the right guy.
Honestly, only one I don't have problem with the voices is with Jack Black being Bowser

I can tell who was born after the 80's based on their reaction to Mario's voice! XD Anyone who didn't grow up with the Super Mario Brother's Super Show (1989) or the Super Mario Bros film (1993) wouldn't expect that the voice is based on the origin lore for Mario that he and his brother are Italian American plumbers living in Brooklyn who accidentally get isekai'd into the Mushroom Kingdom. Chris' voice is definitely inspired by Lou Albano's and Bob Hoskin's voices for Mario. I love Mario's voice in this movie, but I also own the complete series of the Super Mario Brother's Super Show, lol.
Problem being a slight accent doesn't change the voice enough to be someone new. We know how chris prat sounds and this is him. He needed to go the extra mile to change his tone and inflection to but didnt.

Honestly, everyone sounds really good in that trailer. Jack Black is a pretty good Bowser and Keegan Michael Key's performance as Toad is also good. I especially like how Keegan doesn't do that throaty, squeaky Toad voice that most of the games portay him with.
Chris Pratt disappointed me tho. It's just his normal Chris Pratt voice, but with a slight New York accent. Maybe I'll get used to it at some point.

I think in general most of these characters never talk, so no matter what there will be some weirdness. I mean even Donkey Kong is being voiced and he only makes Gorillia noises (and no the cursed 3d animated DK series does not count lol)
People just don't get that if Mario spoke in the same manner in this movie like he does in all the games for almost 2 hours or more would get weird and irritating.
Him sounding like a normal guy makes sense cause both him and Luigi are just normal guys to begin with, their just plumbers who were thrust into big responsibilities.

@@Arashi257 I mean even then, the real jarring part for most people seems to sound like just Chris Pratt (with slight Brooklyn). I mean, it’s less a problem with Chris Pratt’s acting and more so that Mario feels miscast.
Maybe a subdued version of the game doesn’t work. But even going by the Brooklyn accent version, this isn’t a strong showing.
It’s not Chris’s fault here and more the producer/director really.

Chris Pratt does seem to be putting on a bit of a Brooklyn accent but you can't hear it when he's being quiet in that first bit.
The thing with Mario is that we half expect Chris to do an Italian accent since that's how Nintendo portrayed Mario in the first place while bowser doesn't really speak, most of the time he just growl so giving him any voice as long as it's grumpy sounds fine while Mario with New York accent doesn't really fit the character's personality as Nintendo intended to be

I wouldn't say all, but a good majority of the hate is just the typical Chris Pratt haters. Others who are hating it is because they love Charles Martinet Mario version because his voice has been around almost all the mario games and grew up around it and there are some who are not aware that there was other actors/VA before Charles Martinet and was suppose to be more around the Brooklyn accent, But Charles Martinet wanted to changed it up a bit to be more cheery and joyful for kids to like it.
Charles Martinet also does the voice for Luigi, Wario & Waluigi and yet nobody arguing over the voice actor playing as Luigi in the movie lol.

I think people are a bit too harsh on Chris Pratt for the first trailer. I'm not a fan of Chris by any means, but all we've gotten were two voice lines which will probably be re-recorded before the actual movie releases, and Chris Pratt doing an Italian accent for an hour+ would get mega annoying fast (they could have just cast Charles Martinet as Mario but whatever)
I'm not expecting an Italian accent from him. Atleast change a little bit cause he sounded like Chris Pratt and like he is not playing a character it's just him on a Mario costume.

As a Spanish speaker who has also seen the Spanish one, I have to say the Spanish voices are absolutely much worse. Bowser doesn't sound bad but sounds quite worse than in English, Toad sounds too normal (I didn't really like the English one but at least it was quirky, better than this) and Mario straight up sounds even more regular than Chris Pratt (even though the dub actor is the one who always does Chris Pratt's dubs, he somehow sounds worse than in the other roles), he even sounds stupid and cringe. They fucked up imo.

@@Frawst_ He sounds way different for most of the trailer, it's just certain parts that might take me out of it.
I imagine that when I'm actually in the theater and have been watching for an hour or two this effect will probably disappear because I'll acclimate.
and I mean, of course it's subconscious. It still affects the experience though. I doubt it will lessen the experience of the movie for me though.

Would it have killed him to say "Here we Go!" instead of "Here we come" come on Chris you had one job, can you at least give a bit of fanservice.

@@VampireSentoki56 Sure he didn't wrote the script, but didn't he said in the tiny interview before that they worked on the voice together, if he really cared, he could have said it in a more fitting way

@@roberttheronin9803 Yes! after all they're the ones who hired Pratt in the first place, also it may not even be chris' fault maybe its just a weird descision from the director. All i'm saying is the catchphrase was right there and they decided to go for this. Also it's just a trailer they may decide to change it who knows?
@@SeizetsuYamiyo he'll say here we go probably after the darkest hour moment. He hasn't made his catch phrase yet. Also, "mushroom kingdom here we go" doesn't really sound... Proper.
