Ah, the glorious days when racing videogames were FUN, not boring and miserable like driving through highway traffic. And what a showcase for Nintendo 64's power: no popup, smooth textures, highly impressive.
Too bad the very good graphics makes it hard for emulators to emulate...You basically have to be on PC and not on a hacked Wii or Mobile Phone to play this.
Too bad arcade racing games are not looked at with such fondness these days anymore, I don't know if people think they've gone out of style, which is most likely the reason, I don't know, but they never go out of style to me, they exist for a reason, for lighthearted fun. but honestly we need more arcade race games with the same vehicle handling as this one.
Looking back this game was well ahead of its time to have music that featured band instruments and vocals. not many others I can remember that did except Road Rash.

I think the game was mostly graphically focused on instead of playability. As you can see, the game has stunningly solid frame rates and wonderfully designed graphics and other visual features, however it's lacking deeply in design and playability. It's a transcendent above other racers and it clearly is N64's most beautiful racer for it's time.
I was probably like 6 at the time and I wanted a super Nintendo because that's what all my buddies had at the time. My dad takes me to Sears and gets me an N64 with a bunch of games, top gear included and it was the best game out of the bunch. This game got me into the racing genre and I've never looked back.
Hm . Are the songs from this game "real" songs, or were they recorded by the development team? I know some N64 racers used actual artists music, like how NASCAR 99 used Surfin' With the Alien by Joe Satriani, among other songs, but it definitely wasn't as common of an occurrence as it is now
There was absolutely no way to play this game with the top cars without bumping everywheret, but it was kind of a "dance" that you had to memorize... this game is awesome!
they should make new Top gear overdrive 2 to PS3 or xbox one or pc or something like that I would like part 2 of this game I like this game I have completed game and was always 1 place on race

@@ReflexPancake I got it nearly perfect on Mupen64 on Android. Very minimal graphical glitches.

This, Top Gear Rally and Star Wars Racer gave me a LOT of fun back in the day, and i'm not even a big fan of racing games.

I was never good at this game. Need to go back and give it another go. This was the game that introduced me to the F40.
