Hey @turndownforwalt, I'd love to see a video of this nature exploring the intricate play styles of top players. And more specifically, how when opposite play styles/natures intersect on the top stage of Melee! It's a specific request, but I could see so clearly you making a topic like this work eloquently in a video! Obvious suggestion would be Mang0 vs Hbox but do your thing!!! All love, huge fan, keep up the fantastic work!!

@@jaysean9589 well I would say Chess isn't a sport because it doesn't have an aspect of physicality like Melee and traditional sports do. The same thing with poker. If someone who is paralysed can compete at a high level (theoretically possible in Chess and Poker) it probably isn't a sport.

Part of the iceberg you've scratched at reminded me an overlong quote below from Infinite Jest. It's actually about tennis, in place of Melee, though I think there are many unrealized parallels between the two. I hope you find this quote meaningful and illuminating.
"The true opponent, the enfolding boundary, is the player himself. Always and only the self out there, on court, to be met, fought, brought to the table to hammer out terms. The competing boy on the net’s other side: he is not the foe: he is more the partner in the dance. He is the what is the word excuse or occasion for meeting the self. As you are his occasion. Tennis’s beauty’s infinite roots are self-competitive. You compete with your own limits to transcend the self in imagination and execution. Disappear inside the game: break through limits: transcend: improve: win. Which is why tennis is an essentially tragic enterprise… You seek to vanquish and transcend the limited self whose limits make the game possible in the first place. It is tragic and sad and chaotic and lovely."

Amazing stuff man, and an incredibly eloquent way to say how I think many of us feel about the game! I often like to find ways that top players' personalities shine through in their gameplay (whether that be how reserved, aggressive, methodical, or how they react in high pressure situations), and I feel like Melee allows for that more than any other competitive game that I'm familiar with. And after all, self expression is what we should strive for most when playing the game, and in living our lives.
As for how your engineering job/YT career is gonna pan out, I can only say that I consider the quality of your videos to be like the quality of play from a top player in Melee, and I think you express yourself greatly through that. Like you really put in an insane amount of work every time out, and it's honestly crazy how you haven't grown the channel even faster than you have. But like Zain, and all the other competitors who've come up with a similar brand of grind, I know you'll reach far beyond 100K someday if that's what you want. And either way, I'm wishing you the best my guy.

I recently had a falco ditto on netplay, where we played exactly like I one another. It was freaky. I've never seen anything like it. It's not like I'm unique or anything, but melee is just so expressive that it's bizarre to see similar players. I told my wife about it and she understood the concept so well that she suggested that it may have been an AI mimicking my style LOL. While that's a bit out there, I love how it seems more likely than actually finding two melee players who play the same way.

Another interesting one for people getting cut at high school level and then going on to being the best. Brian O'Driscoll, probably one of the best centers in Rugby ever, was cut from both junior and senior teams in "high school" in Ireland for being too small.

For me jt really just comes down to showing them a melee set, asking them if they can do that with money on the line, crowd, etc. No? Okay then. The studying situations and plays, matchups, to put all that at the front of your focus is any sports task.

    It absolutely makes sense.
Video games is still a new rise in society today in America.
In Japan, China, and Korea they already accepted video games and don't bring down video games because they're unfamiliar.
America society will become familiar with video games soon and they'll see that they aren't so bad and, can be compared to real life, sports, psh, Anything and everything, like
    P. S.
Music is compared with anything and everything
And Video games is able to do the same by changing its genre, tempo, purpose, style, audience.

Honestly this makes me think about the thought process of some of my favorite mma fighters. Dominick Cruz comes to mind. He literally took bits and pieces of multiple styles and made his own and grinded his ass off. I'll never get the whole " not real sport" argument though. Competition and the urge for growth are in everything. Fuck mario party though.

    • @turndownforwalt
      @turndownforwalt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

MMA is a great parallel and it can certainly be applied to the topics of this video! I completely agree with you - competition and a desire for improvement are a part of almost everything!

I think melee's goal of king of the hill and not reducing hp makes it so that there are so many correct answers to any situation that the answer you choose really help define peoples personal playstyles.
Also commenting for engagement because youtube is SUUUUUUUPER dumb.
