    Definitely prioritizing cut bait in the upcoming season. I'm in Minnesota so the laws make doing live bait a hassle and I can only have one rod out anyway. Caught my PB 38lb flathead on a dice size piece of sucker towards last fall.

    Wish I would have found your channel sooner but now is better than never. Being from New Orleans I grew up primarily salt and brackish water fishing. I’ve been in East Tennessee for 15 years and haven’t fished yet but that’s about to change as a result of finding your channel. I used to fish deep channels at night for sail cats and loved it. These flat heads look equally as fun to catch. Are they like always around (all year) or are there better times than others to fish for them. I really only ask because of something you said in this video about regretting not fishing for them now a couple months later or something like that. Thanks for your videos and keep fishing 👍

    I seem to only catch them on cut bait. Today I had 3 rods with live Bluegill out and 2 rods with cut bait. I couldn't keep the Channel Catfish off the live Bluegill and the only Flathead was caught on cut bait. My personal best Flathead was caught on cut bait too.

    Not a flathead but I was tickled pink I caught my first 60 a couple days ago on a bait you wouldn't believe ( chicken breast) 😭😂 and a fairly small piece at that about the size of a half dollar. Anyways I thought I would share that with you and whoever scrolls past this lol and thanks for the tips I always like to hear from other knowledgeable fishermen my biggest Flathead which was about 30 lb was on a big cut chunk of bluegill cut off right behind the dorsal fin. keep it up man keep catching them fish and putting out great content I know me personally would never get tired of fishing it's one of them things you love and the deepest part of yourself when you hear that drag squeal or see that rod bend over gives you a special kind of feeling!

      Cut Bait counts as live bait

    • @mch.l.trecords9169
      @mch.l.trecords9169 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coryandrews7306 it actually depends on the regulations in your particular state on whether cut bait is actually considered live bait. For example in Iowa where I live cut-bait is actually classified as dead bait which is a completely different classification than what they have for live bait. People just need to do research on their own states particular regulations because not every state is the same.

What would you recommend as far as line and rigging? And the reels your using in this video with line counter is what I'm going to try for this setup. I have only fished for flathead in the fall when they school up. Mostly because the river I fish for flathead has a low density of them. That evens up the odds in my favor. I just drift through the deeper holes (15-16 feet) and vertical jig with a 3/8 oz 4x salmon jighead dressed with a 5" swimbait or curly tail grub, tipped with a small chub or sucker. The hits are incredible and leave no doubt. I do use M/H spinning equipment with 15# braid. Best so far is a 55# fish. There are no oily bait fish in the river so the flatties predate on small drum and white bass mostly.

      Rod and reel is tough for shad. If you can legally snag them, that's your best bet.

    Good info! Honestly all the flatheads I caught this past year ( which wasn’t a lot😂) was on cut bait. I was fishing below a dam in Wisconsin last June with a live blue gill. A tiny snot rocket pike that barely fit it in its mouth killed it. Cut the head off and later put a 20 pounder in the boat. Lol. PS keep the hair. I’m growing mine out just because I’m going bald in the front. Just trying to keep the party going while I can 😂

    I fish in the Colorado river area. Mostly lower Havasu. No blues. Flathead and channel cats. I've gotten most of my flatheads on cut baits. 9 times out of 10 I'll cut a live bait to use for flatheads. It's more productive for me than live bait. Enjoy

    🇨🇦 Angler Hey Spence 👋 great episode..from what you've taught me I think shad live or nice bib oily mid section right pre spawn. So I've been watching your 2019 /2020 episodes and someone asking why you didn't have any tattoos..are you a baby.. you said smart baby or scared of pain one lol..then in 2020 I noticed your calf started showing a pic and has progressed till now a whole calf tat. I heard you say to another angler your love of flatheads, im starting to feel the same, they are so 😎 and different colours and those monster heads,..anyway you said "that's why I have a flathead in my tattoo. Can you share what your tat looks like..if you don't mind sharing. Best to Ella and woody. Deborah

    Hmmmm, I don't think of crappie as oily. Why do you suggest cut crappie over bluegill? The good thing is I can quickly fill a bucket with small, stunted crappie from a nearby lake for bait

    • @RiverCertified
      @RiverCertified  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crappies have more oil than bluegills, at least from what I can tell. Both are great baits, but I've consistently done better on crappie.
