Even though the "Golden Child" in the movie was portrayed as a boy, "he" was actually played by a female actress, J.L. Reate. Her real name is Jasmine Reate. She was born September 14, 1979, in Monterey County, California. "The Golden Child" was the only movie she appeared in.

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid! Eddie Murphy is so great in this and it’s so quotable. No one reacts to this movie so I appreciate you doing it. It’s wild to me that more people haven’t seen this film. It’s a classic to me!

This movie has always held a special place in my heart. Eddie is so quotable. And I saw this on a cruise ship when my extended family cruised to the Bahamas. I spent the whole trip watching movies, dancing on the dancefloor in the afternoon, and drinking Shirley Temples in the bar. There was an arcade on board too. The Golden Child always makes me think of that cruise. Also, fun fact, the Golden Child is male, but the child playing him was a shaved-headed little girl. She grew up pretty! Love the movies you react to Jay! You help me relive my childhood and teens!

I remember watching this back in '86. "The Golden Child" and "Big Trouble in Little China" is a great example of one studio trying to coopt another's project and beat them to market with a similar film but I love them both and like to think of them as in the same cinematic universe.

"Keep your thought as pure as the water."
"Hey, this water ain't really that pure."
    "Un-heh, neither are you."
Fun Fact: Although the Golden Child is referred to as a boy throughout the film, J.L. Reate is actually a girl.
Location Location Fact: The house that Eddie Murphy stays in after his return from Nepal with the dagger is the same house that Steven Seagal's character uses in Hard To Kill (1990) to recuperate from a coma.
Music Enthusiast Fact: John Barry was commissioned by Paramount Pictures to compose, produce, and record a complete score. However, Barry was taken off the project after creative differences and reaction to test screenings . Although Michel Colombier completed the score, a few cues by Barry remain in the film, and one, Wisdom Of The Ages, was released on the original soundtrack LP. As of the present, the entirety of both Barry's largely unused music and Colombier's final theatrical version score have been issued on a limited edition 3-CD soundtrack by Capitol/La-La Land Records.

Underrated and very quotable. A LOT of funny moments from Murphy. Also, another underrated Murphy movie is BOOMERANG... a solid rom-com if you haven't seen it yet. And since you've done a couple of Murphy movies already, might as well react to the new one he's doing with Jonah Hill & Nia Peeples when that comes out.

Funny, you made the reference to Inspector Gadget. Because the voice of the Dark Master is Frank Welker, longtime voice artist, who was part of that second wave of voice artists that came in the mid-1960's until the 1980's. He first used that voice for Dr. Claw, then later for Darkseid during the last two seasons of Superfriends and Soundwave in Transformers (electronically modified). Since 1969, he has been the voice of Freddie in Scooby-Doo and, since 2002, Scooby himself. Other characters he voiced include Toyman, Mr. Mxyzptlx, Joker and Penguin in Superfriends, Iceman in Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Megatron/Galvatron in Transformers, Kermit in Muppet Babies and Dr. Ray Stantz in The Real Ghostbusters, plus numerous animal characters, including Brain.

Great movie, I mean "golden" movie. There are so many 80's and 90's movies that deserved more recognition than they got. But all of them are cult classics for a reason. The Golden Child (1986) is one of them, Eddie Murphy was in his peak back there! Easy recommendation!

5:15 Charlotte Lewis (The young lady trying to recruit Eddie Murphy's character) was about 18 when her scenes were filmed. Charles Levin, the TV show host in the beginning of the movie, died a few years ago after getting his car stuck out in the Oregon wilderness and falling down a 30 foot cliff/slope while searching for help. And the 'Golden Child' was played by a girl.

Maaan, I saw this as a teenager in the movie theater when it was released.
Apparently this movie was part of a deal Eddie Murphy made where he made so many movies they wanted him to make & he got a movie deal to make his own movies, Boomerang being the first of those. Then he recieved negative press feedback for having an all Black cast for Boomerang.

I am very impressed that you remembered "3 Ninjas". That was a favorite of mine. Victor Wong was also in Big Trouble. Though it's probably not as well remembered as "Beverly Hills Cop", for instance, I still think it belongs in any Eddie Murphy collection. It's a classic, to me. It has its own style, compared to Big Trouble. For a similar film, but a slightly more contemporary feel, you might like Jackie Chan's "The Medallion".

Way back in 1990 I was at an SF convention where the author of the novelization, George Chesbro, was one of the guests. A real gentleman and a scholar. The novelization was based on an earlier draft of the script is almost a completely different story; Chandler was a white guy- the studio was trying to land Mel Gibson for the part- and way more serious, since this was before all of Murphy's ad-libs and rewrites to punch up the gags

Saw this one originally in the theater, it was a double feature with Richard Pryor's "Critical Condition" . i havn't watched this film in 30 years probably. Not one of his best films but it is alright. The music cracks me up on how out of place it is in scenes for the mood of the film and what is going on in the scene. James Hong is awesome, First Comic Con i went to i 1997 my friend and i met him, we were waiting for him to come to the booth and was picking a photo for him to sign..he comes up behind us and says thats me pointing at the photos, lol then as he was signing he asked us if we wanted him to recite some lines from Big trouble..before we could answer he launches into lines from the film..it was a riot.

I've always had the feeling that this was a straight action script that was written for your run-of-the-mill action star, but then they somehow landed Eddie Murphy and he did what he could to improvise some humor into it. It's too bad that it wasn't tailored more to him and that the whole movie isn't like the mere 20 minutes in Tibet, which is the best part. I think that it should've been a fish-out-of-water movie with Eddie spending the vast majority of it in Tibet, similar to what we got a few years later with Coming to America. It would've been so much better. I still have a fondness for the movie and watch it from time to time, but it's really just for the 20 minutes in Tibet.

I believe this was actually one of the biggest films of 1986 (Top Gun took the prize as the biggest). Eddie Murphy had been in one of the biggest comedies ever a couple of years earlier (Beverly Hills Cop) so his name and face on the poster was enough to bring in the punters.
Actually I would say the 80s was the high point in his career, the only flop he starred in that decade was Harlem Nights. 48 Hours, Trading Places, 2 Beverly Hills Cop films and Coming to America - all 80s movies and all hits. He would sadly never again show such box office consistency, although he would still have a few hits peppered about his career in the decades to come.

I LOVED this movie when I was a kid. No idea why it wasn't a hit. Was made during peak Murphy as well. Maybe it was the satanic mutants going after a Buddhist kid?

A lot of nods to this movie in the Ace Ventura universe.

James Hong is in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it.

I haven't seen it yet but gonna watch it soon. Maybe my lazy Sunday movie. The cast of that movie seems pretty wild!

@@JayBondReacts I think I heard that it was nominated for like ten Oscars. It has to win for costumes and editing. Both were amazing.

The film was a pretty good success. Did 150m with a 20m budgett. But for some reason didn't get much syndication so it was kind of lost over time.

I miss this stage of Eddie Murphy's career. I'd like to see him play this kind of fast talking wise ass again.

Absolutely. It's a side I hadn't really seen before. I truly wish I watched him more growing up and didn't just know him as the Nutty Professor. 🤦‍♂️
