No, not quite: "Yenta" is actually a respectable Yiddish name that has been used for centuries. Only since the popularity of FIDDLER has the name of this character become a synonym for the nouns "a busybody" and "a gossip." (In use: "Jan is such a Yenta.") Interesting, huh :-)
She's probably the most flexible role in the whole show - I've seen her played by all types, short women, tall women, with higher or lower voices, even by a few men.
It is a fantastic character part. Wonderful monologue. Totally see the late Bea Arthur in that role. Molly Picon a classic Yiddish theater actress. Stellar casting!
I'm sure that seeing such a diminutive actress in this movie playing this part has prejudiced me, but as brilliant a comedienne as Bea Arthur was, I find her larger-than-life stature too imposing for this character.
@@littlemarmoset it's a great part and Yente has one of the best stage monologues ever.......Didn't Molly Picon have that part on the LONDON stage? A renowned Yiddish theater veteran! I totally respect your opinion, Scott, but I am glad Bea Arthur was cast in that role. The way I see it, Yente was meant to be a TYPE, a larger than life character. She used to wield a lot of influence in the shtetl community, but in the course of the play, it is drastically reduced. Anyway, with or without Bea Arthur, it is one of the best parts ever for an older woman
@@catherinehazur7336 After I wrote that, I found out that Bea Arthur *had* played the part on Broadway, so I stand corrected. I'm sure if I'd seen her Yente instead of the one in "Fiddler," I'd have raved about *that* performance. As I said, she certainly was a *brilliant* comedienne, with one of the best senses of timing I've ever experienced! Thanks for your reply. I'm sure it's a super fun part to play.
In Yiddish Yente is not a name; it's a term for a meddling busybody, normally referring to a woman. Case in point: she opened up Hodel's letter from Perchik.
Yente is attempting to set Lazar Wolf up with Tzeitel, but personally, I think I know a much more practical wife for Lazar: Yente herself. Anyone agree?
It depends on what Lazar Wolf wants from a wife. If he wants a companion, Yente would be fantastic! If he wants someone to give him children (of which he doesn’t seem to have any), then someone younger would be better (from his POV, anyway).
Golda sounds just like my mother. When i was 25 after one disastrous relationship, she decided, that was it, i was on the shelf. She was right. I didn’t get married until two weeks before my 40th birthday. And not for love. For convenience on both sides.
so im a quite a goldish brown skin colour and im auditioning for the role of golde. So you think it would be silly for me to audition for this role because of the colour of my skin? and there are no brown jewish people?
They choose actresess with long noses as they see jewish woman. Like a caricture. But jewish weman in hollivood were allways lovely. And israeli girls are beutiful..
How the world changed nearly after a century. Now women expectations have gone up so high, boys are finding difficult to get married . This is in India.
"A husband is not to look at, a husband is to get!" Declared by the mother with a hard face and fist in the air! Hahaha, love it!!
Im Yente in my school play! I'm so excited, love her part!
Same
Congratulations! This is my FAVORITE musical! Have fun!
Just be sure to poke your nose into everything you can, that'll make a great display of Yente!
Enjoy your play!
Yenta is a real Hoot. Imagine your fate left in the hands of crazy Yenta. YIKES!

I thought yenta was Yiddish for an old lady
Is it racist? The word yenta?
I’m sorry, I can’t find them
@@maddogship So more like Karen?
Yenta’s are still respected. Because they have all the power.
"From such children come other children" XD

This woman is not the one who had played "Maud", but one of the other Golden Girls.
Always love your children. And you’re children’s children And your great children’s children, always!
Those floppy arms as Motel comes running up to the house 😂
I just got cast as Hodel and I'm so excited!
So how did it go?
I love this movie.
Christopher Martin same there.
I’m Golde in my school musical! Can’t wait to act as her!
I just got casted as yente today!! I’m so excited !

The joke is Yiddish goes "a yenta's business is yours."
That's outstanding.
@Rose dowling Which is made all the funnier by the rest of the context provided here. ;)
“Not every woman in the world is a yenta”
Golden Girl Bea Arthur originated the role of Yenta the Broadway production. You can hear her singing in the soundtrack.
I love the little sisters giggling.
I just found out today that I will be playing Yente in my school's play this year....I'm soooo excited
☺️
Mazel tov!
"No the tzar's Tzytle of course your's" lmfao
Out of all the characters in the movie, I think Yente would be the most fun to play, lol
"No! The Czar's Tsaitel!" 😂
You know...given Nicholas' antisemitic views that would've been interesting if he had a daughter named Tzeitel & never knew the origin of the name
Yente is attempting to set Lazar Wolf up with Tzeitel, but personally, I think I know a much more practical wife for Lazar: Yente herself. Anyone agree?
Yes, or someone closer to his age would be better.
I thought that, too. 😅
It depends on what Lazar Wolf wants from a wife. If he wants a companion, Yente would be fantastic! If he wants someone to give him children (of which he doesn’t seem to have any), then someone younger would be better (from his POV, anyway).
He wanted kids!!! Not a yenta wife!!
No - he wanted children.
"Not every woman in the world is a yenta."
And praise Jehovah for that.
XD
Yahweh.
Amen.
Molly Picon plays Yenta. A wonderful actress, starting I believe in the Yiddish theater and in radio theater.
I'm playing Yente at the spring.. And my Yente is not as friendly as this one.. :D oh... Can't wait!! :D
I haven't got much Yiddish but I do know most of the song from Fiddler.
I feel you...... the songs I like that are not English, I just learn the words to sing along! 😅🤗
I am not Yenta in my schoolplay. We didnt have schoolplays.
But sometimes, the toilets were working at my school back then...
Here because of Desperate Housewives. I wanted to know who Yenta was.
motel is so cute
I'm Yente in my school play! So excited (:
I need an opinion, should I audition for Yente or Chava? I'm so torn...
My PERSONAL opinion would be Yente :) she's sooo funny; but it's your choice! Either one is great!
What ended up happening?? :)
I play yente in my school play!!

I'm sorry to hear
"Prepair my poor Sabbath meal" Yenta you're stealing the food off the table of your host right in front of them! That's not right
Wonderful!
IM YENTE IN MY SCHOOL PLAY AND IM PSYCHED!!
I have thought that Yente would be a good match for Lazar Wolf. ❤❤❤
What about the tea scene? Interesting way to make tea. Got pretty dark for just a quick pour of hot water.
Is Molly Picon Yenta here?
Yes :)
Well ... she was ... yes.
Good god this lady was amazing. Fuck.
I think Aaron may have gotten Allegheny bio lab evaluation series'
Anyone else picturing Bea Arthur in this scene?

Afaik, any person can be jewish, you don't have to be born into it, it's more a religious thing. Although I'm not jewish so I don't know for sure.
There are Jews of every ethnicity. The Jews of Europe tended to look.... European but It really doesnt matter.
Judaism is a religion so it has people of all races. I wish you luck with auditioning!
I know this was 5 years ago, but I sincerely hope you auditioned and got the part. Jews come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.
