  • “The crumb of comfort is Keir Starmer's personal ratings…Unfortunately, next to that is a cup of cold sick, which is that people are utterly fed up with the Conservatives.”
Rishi Sunak’s prediction that the UK is heading for a hung parliament is “for the birds”, says chief executive of Ipsos Ben Page.

They said the exact same thing last year and since then they've been trounced in by election after by election and the polls haven't changed. The idea that local elections that most people dont even vote in and where people vote for the Residents Association and other 3rd parties have any bearing on a GE is delusional, not least as it was only some places in England anyway.
Look at the mayoral elections, the Tories got trounced in West Yorkshire, trounced in Greater Manchester, trounced in South Yorkshire, trounced in Merseyside, lost in the East Midlands, lost in the West Midlands and even lost in North Yorkshire - thats true blue North Yorkshire and they lost. And the reality is if they hadnt rigged the voting system and changed it back to FPTP theyd have lost most of the PCCs they held onto as well.
We had a byelection on the same day and the Tories were trounced by Labour and nearly came 3rd behind Reform. If the Tories want to keep spreading this nonsense then fair enough but it wont be 2015 where they scare voters into sticking with them; all it'll do is motivate people to get out and vote to oust the Tories - they're pathetic and the GE can't come soon enough

As a Labour voter I say the Tories need a complete clear out or a split. The country needs a decent opposition, a moderate centre right party, but the whole ‘Tory’ brand is now a toxic mess, associated with self-serving grafters with a personal agenda of making themselves richer and destroying any kind of rights for the British people. What do the Conservatives actually stand for, apart from Rwanda and leaving the ECHR?

I am not necessarily the greatest fan of the current brand of the Conservative Party, but my thoughts after the Local Elections results came in were in those very words - that a Labour landslide is "for the birds". After the last General Election I think that Sir Keir Starmer will have pulled off a remarkable achievement should he win an absolute majority of any description. As for a hung parliament that holds no fears for me and it could, as was remarked by that person contacting the show, lead to the introduction of PR - a very positive outcome, I would say.

I agree that Kier Starmer and Labour may not be the ideal opposition to lead this country. That is based on people’s thoughts that it doesn’t matter who governs the country, they are as bad as one another.
The fact is, the conservatives have been dreadful and people have lost all faith and trust in them. The country is in a worse state now than what it was 15 years ago, and it’s getting worse.
People are fed up. The country is lawless, the policing is underpowered and quite frankly useless. The prisons are full and under staffed. Sentencing and the release of prisoners is absolutely shocking.
The government’s only focus seems to be on immigration right now. The issues in this country run a lot deeper than that and the government have failed to act on them. Now they have left it too late. The biggest problems have now bottled necked, and so has the mood of the country. We are sick and tired of what this country has become. If politics doesn’t sort things out, I can see the public taking it to the streets and who knows what will happen then.

They do NOT have any faith in the Tories to make their lives better and are bewildered by the thought that sending 100 refugees to Rwanda at vast expense is going to change their lives at all. It not easy to blame refugees for problems caused entirely of the Conservative governments making, though the Conservatives are trying very hard.

Sunak being as politically tone-deaf (and dishonest) as he always is.
If the local elections are a good guide to a General Election, then didn't the Tories come third in this one?
Is Sunak claiming these results prove that the Tories will finish behind the Libs in a GE?
In addition, if the polls showed a genuine close race between Labour and Tories, then it would motivate Tory voters to turn out because of concerns of Labour having to join up with the Libs and the Nationalists. But the election results, if we are unwise enough to use them as a guide to the GE, show that it would be easy in the case of a hung Parliament for Labour to join up with the Libs and no other party.
Sorry, Sunak, but you are just encouraging people even more to vote to get you out. Resign.
