A general overview of the Book of 1 Kings continues the history of the Israelite monarchial kingdom begun in the books of Samuel. The book may be divided into three parts:
    1) The succession of Solomon as king of the combined kingdoms of Israel and Judah, and the death of the proceeding king his father David.
    2) The reign and achievements of king Solomon. Especially noteworthy is an account of his building of the Temple in Jerusalem.
    3) The division of the nation into the northern and southern kingdoms, Israel and Judah respectively, and the stories of the kings who ruled these separate kingdoms down to the middle of the ninth century B.C.
In the two books of the Kings each ruler is described and judged according to his loyalty and obedience to God, and national success is seen as depending on this loyalty and obedience, while idolatry and disobedience lead to disaster after disaster. The kings of the northern kingdom of Israel all fail the test, while the southern kingdom of Judah's kings have mixed results.
Prominent in the book of 1 Kings are the prophets of the Lord, these courageous spokesmen for God who warned the people to remain loyal and obedient to God and to not disobey by worshiping idols. Particularly notable to this end is the prophet Elijah and the account of his conflict with the priests of Baal in chapter 18.

In chapter 1 King David is dying and is cold. His servants found a woman to lay with him. This might sound strange but my commentary says this was a prescribed medical practice that was described by the second century Greek physician Galen and the Jewish Historian Josephus.

Indeed strange, but apparently an accepted cultural practice
