He got caught because police zeroed in on three things: 1 Geography (where he lived and worked). 2 His burner phones & his real phone in connection with that geography. 3.And finally because a witness described seeing a car (Avalanche) where one of the victims was last seen. That last one was ignored for many years. But once the police looked again they narrowed down their list of suspects by who owned this kind of vehicle at the time and place of the murders. Once they had their prime suspect, the police got his DNA from a discarded pizza box he threw away and then compared it to some DNA left at the crime scene. Once it matched, he was toast and the monster was arrested.

So the victim with the tattoo on her breast wasn’t bitten. It was a tattoo of a peach drawn with a bite taken out of it. If I recall correctly it made the peach look like a heart. This victim is generally referred to as “peaches”.

I hope they catch him. I live on Long Island and one of his victims' "peaches" was found in a park two blocks from my previous home. Her child's body was and the rest of her remains were found near Jones Beach. I still can't believe no one came forward to identify them.

It's disgusting and depraved to take a life. And that of an innocent child just goes beyond evil. These poor women are out there on the streets because they are lost, feel unloved, were raped, kicked out at a young age, misled by some false promise of love by a partner, and they're just trying to survive. I don't understand how anyone can look at a prostitute and not want to hold them and tell them "you are so much more than you see."

Ahhhh!!! I’m from LI so thank you for covering this case, Dr. G!
Many of us here think it was that Bittrolff guy. Word has it that he did some handyman carpentry work in Gilgo Beach back in the day too (although that doesn’t necessarily mean anything on its own). Several others think it smacks of a Suffolk County Police Dept willfully blind coverup kind of like the Stephanie Lazarus case by the LAPD.
One of the most negligent things was how the Suffolk Police did not ask for or get the camera footage at the entrance of the Gilgo Beach community Shannan called 911 from until months later when the videotape was already overwritten. Negligent much? 😖 I would not be surprised if they had stuff written down in crayon and cereal killer in their files. 🤣 It’s kind of a disgrace given that Suffolk Police make a ton of money courtesy of county property taxes. My colleague’s husband is on the force and he earns about $300K per year no joke. No disrespect to the hardworking government officials here who do exist, but generally Long Island is very very corrupt and usually the police are never in any hurry to use their manpower to solve crimes.
“What are they waiting for? They’re really playing the long game here. Maybe they’re hoping to catch the killer when he’s in his 80s. I don’t know why that would be advantageous.”
🤣🤣🤣 Another classic Dr. G line.
Thanks for the daily dose of humor and education!

I'm a Suffolk County "Lifer" and you are 100% on point. The SCPD are so inept imo I don't know of a single big investigation that they didn't botch and their indifference to crimes like this one is mind-boggling! Knowing they make that kind of money is even more sickening since they do little more than give out traffic citations. We are one of the most expensive places to live b/c of extreme property tax rates and these cops are making 6 figures?? For what? I'd really like to know!

This case has been my obsession for almost 10 years and I am so happy to see you address it! A few thoughts…
    - John Bittrolff: Prior to the discovery of The Gilgo Beach 4, the killer of the dismembered victims had been dubbed “The Manorville Butcher.” This is another piece that points in the direction of Bittrolff… at least as it pertains to those specific victims.
    - Bittrolff was likely responsible for a third murder even though he was only convicted of two. All three victims were posed, and their left shoes were removed. He was convicted through a DNA match found in semen left on or in two victims. One could reasonably assume, therefore, that DNA was NOT found with The Gilgo 4. Otherwise, Bittrolff would have been identified or ruled out as the killer of those victims.
    - Many people have questioned whether Bittrolff could also be The Eastbound Strangler, who murdered four prostitutes in Atlantic City, NJ, removed their shoes and socks, and posed them facing east.
    - It was reported very early on that The Gilgo 4 were all strangled and found completely nude. (Shoes removed.)
    - After following this case for nearly a decade, I tend to think that Bitrolff is definitely the Manorville Butcher, but not necessarily the killer of The Gilgo 4 (or the Eastbound 4)... although I could easily be convinced he killed all of them.
    - Calling Melissa's sister: There is a convincing theory that LISK called Melissa’s sister because he directed Melissa not to bring her cell phone and she disobeyed him. Therefore, he “punished” her by calling her sister. (It was also reported that he told the sister Melissa was alive and being tortured.)
    - Lastly, you could do a whole video on the mental health and personality factors of Peter Hackett alone! That guy complicated this case in so many ways. I would not be surprised if he was the killer of The Gilgo 4, and Shannon Gilbert. Hackett was ruled out as a suspect, but we don’t know how he was ruled out, and the police department was proven to be corrupt at the time he was ruled out.
Thanks for covering this case! I also appreciate your thoughts on organized/disorganized serial killers. I find that topic fascinating. Maybe that alone is worth a whole video? :)

    • @pkanereallyrandom
      @pkanereallyrandom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I agree that Bitrolff is a very strong contender for the manorville bodies.
But the killer of the gilgo 4 also called Maureen's friend Sara and taunted her using the same whorehouse terms and reference.
I believe that the remains of the gilgo 4 were found skeletonised, if that is the case then it is highly unlikely that the cops have DNA.
I also doubt the g4 killer has stopped, my guess is that he has just evolved, changed his dumping ground / disposal method or moved away.
At least that's how I see it.

Dr. Grande, in a documentary I saw, it stated that the supposed killer called the victim's sister from an a highly populated area which suggests knowledge on how to avoid being located by satellite. So, rather than suggest carelessness and low conscientiousness, the context suggests otherwise, according to the documentary. It was suggested that he may have been, or still is, a police officer.

Thank you, Dr. Grande. This subject horrifies and saddens me. I was just listening the a podcast yesterday evening about the Missing Women of Juarez. Another massive amount of violence & brutality against regular women and girls. Both in Long island and in the Mexican dessert, the police were confronted with "mass" graves, that were strewn across the same site as many other victims' bodies. I feel more in charge of my horror & fear when I listen to your videos. Thank you for that, as well as everything else you do.
Sometimes I just don't understand why women are so expendable in our (and other) cultures. It's like a burning coal in my chest that I can never seem to be able to let go...but your videos do help me categorize the difference between my feelings and the actual evidentiary facts.
Take care and I hope you are staying safe and doing very well.

Hi Dr. Grande, would you consider doing an analysis video on the mental health and personality of Varg Vikernes? He is an infamous Norwegian black metal artist who was imprisoned for the murder of Euronymous of the band Mayhem, as well as the arson of three churches and a planned fourth arson. The reason behind the murder is highly disputed, some speculate it was the result of a financial dispute. Vikernes claimed that Euronymous was planning to torture and kill him, and he wanted to get to Euronymous before he could get to him. After Vikernes' arrest, police found 150 kg of explosives and 3000 rounds of ammunition in his home. He was planning to blow up a radical leftist/anti-fascist/anarchist enclave in Oslo, the capital of Norway. All of this made him and the black metal scene Norway's bogeyman for a while, and has made him the most infamous black metal artist of all time. It would be fascinating to hear your analysis of his mental health and personality. Additionally, it would be interesting to take a look at the black metal scene and how people within the scene perpetuated hateful ideologies such as white supremacy and fascism.

This guy had to be scary calm to pull over to the side of the road and dig those holes with a dead body in his car. Would have only taken one cop to investigate why he is pulled over.
I find the burial method so strange and intriguing. Buried in a burlap bag in the fetal position and all pointing in the same direction. My theory is they are facing towards his house and he possibly sees them as his children, or maybe his possessions.

Thank you for your excellent analysis of various cases, Dr. Grande, particularly during this pandemic where you've taken the time to make many more videos and on a wide variety of topics. As an INTJ, I particularly appreciate both your focus on scientific objectivity mixed with your deadpan delivery of humorous observations and the wide range of subjects you cover. Would you perhaps be able to take a look at the murder of Australian Tara Costigan, mother of three (3) who was savagely murdered with an axe wielded by her ex-partner as she was actually holding their week-old baby in her arms? I've recently bought the Kindle and Audible book about the murder titled, "The First Time He Hit Her" by Heidi Lemon which goes into detail about the case and the domestic violence which preceded the murder: Tara had taken out an interim domestic violence order just the day before the murder. The book is excellent but I would really appreciate your analysis of the case, both the murderer, Marcus Rappel, and the victim, Tara Costigan and the issues the case raises about domestic violence and the safety of women who take out DV orders.
