I use homemade chicken doodoo, homemade worm castings, homegrown pumpkins, homegrown sunflowers, and wild caught channel catfish in my compost, with hand harvested creek silt added after it is done. I use this as a top dress, a tea, whatever. It is just a little bit of work, but it saves a lot of money, and it works really well. Thanks for the content
I follow the BAS way, but I do supplement CO2 starting late veg, tapering off for last weeks of flower (small commercial grow). I try to stay between 1200-1500ppm when lights are on. I have noticed a significant increase in bud-density and NO reduction in quality.I have strains testing over 4% terps / 30% thc. When I’m not supplementing CO2, my room will drop below 300ppm, even with some exhausting. I could run the exhaust system constantly, but then my humidifier struggles to maintain proper rh.
I have switched to flower after the third growth node, just to see if they would produce. I took the bottom pair of branches from the 4 plants, leaving 4 branches. Just a little bit of lollipopping, and it turned out 4 tops per plant of regular sized high quality buds. Just felt like sharing.

Keeping ferments going in the lung room is one way to incorporate the addition of CO2 without a major investment or alteration of the grow space. Like FPE’s, or even fermenting kombucha, ginger beer and wine! Just one way to passively up the CO2 while having fun.
Everything we do in the commercial grow room to produce for the market is very incremental. It can be thought of as an entourage effect, meaning, adding co2 is not an automatic yield increase. It's the entourage of everything else PLUS co2 that makes the difference & I agree that co2 is last in the list of must haves, right behind RO water in my opinion. The key to adding co2 to a grow is being able to maintain a steady PPM, thus co2 regulators, so I'm not sure how much good hanging a co2 bag or bottle in a tent actually does. I grow in coco & use a feed, feed, flush (with Recharge) watering schedule. The co2 in the room will build a little during lights out. Not sure where that's coming from, my guess is the bio from the Recharge in the coco, but I dunno for sure.
Huge fan of the 10x10 series and was wondering if you would ever do an outdoor grow? I think it would be very interesting seeing how a quadrant with the BAS method handles the weather and pests ect and how you personally would deal with those situations organically. Either way thanks heaps!

I have a 1000 watt Hps and have it remove the air from the tent thru the light out into the room. There is 2 extractors blowing in air from the window a/c unit. One intake is for the canopy and the other is for the bottom pot area. Works out great. All flaps closed, I balanced the intake and out take to keep the tent neutral air pressure in the tent. I have also yellow mushrooms also. Made by neem seed meal.
As far as co2 goes, in sealed rooms it gets a little complex. Young clones/transplants usually can get choked up by the high co2 the beds produce especially at night that number will rise exponentially. As a solution fresh air is pumped in throughout the night in intervals to simultaneously drop the ambient co2 and give the plants fresh air. In doing so the plants don't seem to be shocked or stunted for the week or 2 vs when there's no fresh air whatsoever. The co2 numbers stay fairly ambient throughout the day and night doing this. Another issue comes up when the plants get bigger and start raging.. within a few hours of lights on, no matter how high the ppms got at night, the plants will consume all the available co2 in the air and would be going most of the day without optimal co2 numbers (like lower than ambient co2 levels) thats when adding supplemental co2 comes in to play. Idk how many folks are doing living soil beds in sealed rooms but it does get a little tricky just wanted to post my personal experience.. 👌
I’m one of those people, Sealed room living soil beds. I can’t risk the neighbors smelling my garden so fresh air in and out isn’t an option. That’s why I use co2
My issue is outdoor humidity, 70%+. So with air exchange my grow space will be close to that same 70%. So I have to stop air exchange and turn on dehumidifier and AC. In this scenario I think I should at minimum add a CO2 bag or make a simple yeast table sugar generator.

Could you do a episode on the shelf life of your products? The ferments, Build A bloom, big 6, sea 90, some of the ammendments, craft blend etc... I have a shelving unit that I have a lot of the Build A Soil products and I just wanted to make sure that I'm not using things that aren't good anymore. I like having products that if needed I can use them but definitely don't want them to go "bad"
The ferments are good unless they freeze. They will still have nutrients but be very low in biology. All the dry amendments are good forever as long as you keep them dry. Sea90 is salt, so good forever also. Think of these inputs as minerals and elements from the periodic table. They are good forever as long as they stay in their current form. Now things like compost and worm castings are also good forever but as they dry out you will lose much of the microbiology. Hope this helps.

Yo I've been growing for almost 3 years now, 2 of which have been the build a soil way, And this is by far the best explanation of why you don't have to supplement CO 2 in a living soil system and that was the best visual description of what a Sealed room is and why you would have to supplement CO 2 in a closed room. As a new grower you just see so much information on supplementing CO 2 that you think you have to do it when Your Herb is even more fire when you don't supplement and just use fresh air exchange
when growing commercial and getting tested for aspergillis and other spores there are benefits of a sealed room/sterile system. I wouldnt say herb if more fire when you dont supplement, its just two ways of skinning a cat. When done correct, Co2 can give benefits. In a homegrow, I dont feel its necessary.

I use 6 inch fans for inlet n exhaust plus a few 6 inch fans to make the leaves dance. An automated drip system, top dressing and weekly feeds keep the girls happy. Average yield is 6-8 OZ per plant x 4 per run. The Buildasoil way is working awesomely for me! thanks for all your guidance, bro.
I do as well but they move to the 4x8 for flower. I run can run 5 comfortably in the 4x8 and 2-3 in the 4x4 depending on what strain I’m growing. You’re right! ….Crazy effortless results…. just dumping water in when the bottoms dry and massaging stems out. 1 top dress and you’re done. I run 2 autos per box if I’m doing photos I do 1 per box. But with genetics and quality of autos now, I’m not sure why I ever grow photos anymore.

Always be aware that anytime you supplement C02, And use an air conditioner, That you should have a dual hose portable air conditioner, A Mini split, Or a window split system window unit. Otherwise you are simply venting your CO 2 outside. A split system or dual hose system will keep the CO 2 enriched environment inside and the hot air outside that is being used to pump the compressor . It's usually about 35% more efficient anyway.
Hi there. I've been liking the content- good info that I am sure helps lots of folks grow their own meds. I grow at high altitude in Colorado and feel that CO2 is necessary. The difference in size, density and quality is obvious to me. But that is me.. and every grow room is a little different. There are many factors that lead me to that decision.. running a sealed and controlled environment is a big part of it... I agree that MOST growers won't see the benefit of CO2.. it is expensive and unless you go through all the other steps to have a grow space that makes best use of the addition, you may be just wasting money.. Fresh air ventilation is the best solution for most people. The mushroom CO2 bags are a gimmick. They don't put out enough to make a difference... you need to use tanks or a propane generator if you want to add CO2.
I tried the Exhale Co2 bags and they were a complete waste of money for me. I hung an XL bag (made for a 5x5 area) and their regular size bag in a 3x3 tent that has no exhaust and is located in a closed closet. Co2 went up maybe 100 to 200 for a couple weeks, but then went back to what is was before I added the bags.
Fresh air for the win. I’ll put a window fan in to bring in fresh air from outside into the grow room. Helps control heat and humidity as well and uses way less power than AC. Get a Gorilla tent. Most definitely worth the extra money as the extra height helps with heat as well.

I actually started creating compost because my parents house is dry clay and salty snow ditches and the year I started messing with my yard they redid the entire street so a lot of my work got renewed and I had to double down but now it's even better and took the waste to try to mitigate that hot dry dead soil and now it's so green and lush wet dark brown soft extreme vigor
Thank you for all the amazing knowledge you drop on us. Question regarding a top layer / mulch layer using the fan leaves from defoliation as a top cover. This ought to help keep evaporative loss down, but does it pose any negative effects to the plant far as nutrient toxicity???
Anyone adding co2 please do it properly and use co2 gas from a tank. Exhale bags do not work, simple as that. As stated in the video, co2 is only required if you have hit the dli by using 1000 ppfd and at that point you need to know how much you are adding as it needs to be equivalent to the ppfd ie 1100 ppfd, 1100 ppm (or whatever the measurement is) co2. Has to be a closed system in this instance.

If ya have a short tent you can cut a hole in the bottom for the planter to poke through. Sit the tent on something the height of the pot, supported on each side so the top of the pot is sticking through the hole. You gain the height of the pot back.

I'm definitely with you on C02. But. I've heard magnets near the water you use charges the water and shrinks the molecules and plants drink water faster and more like rain water. So I thought I'd try it. Dude. I've notice a difference in bud size and plants drink water up from the bottom fast. Sounds silly but worth the try.. 🤙. I use a magnetic tool tray near my water..
I started a Lemon tree from seed from a grocery store lemon and that has been really fun and i would love to know more on how to take care of it before i kill it lol
Usually citrus from the store are gonna be hybrids. The seed wont produce the same fruit as the parent. Get a big pot you can roll inside during the winter if you get freezes. That lemon plant might work out, but I think you will be happier buying a nice meyer lemon or some other verified cut from a nursery. Citrus doesnt tolerate freeze, so you gotta move em inside a greenhouse or in a window for the winter. Thats just off top of my head, google or youtube homegrown citrus for more accurate info.
If you grow inside your house there’s no need for supplement Co2 I average in the 700s in my grow space, just from my family and I breathing inside the house.

If I may offer some advice, get into roasting now before you have a harvest, so you know exactly how you want them when they're ready. Check out the Fresh Roast series of roasters, great starter device and when you decide you want to go deeper and get something like a Behmor or bigger, you can give the Fresh Roast to a friend, and convert (or curse!) them to roasting too. Sweet Maria's is a great place for people getting started, they a retailer of home roasters and beans. They've also had a neat series recently on their YT touring some organic farms in Ethiopia too.

Correct! This is because breath contains 38,000ppm CO2. Atmospheric concentration is usually around 420ppm. It doesn’t take much breathing to substantially raise the concentration however it does get used up fairly quickly by the plants.
I use a scrog screen with my earthboxes. I have two earthboxes in a 3x3 and my plants are typically 10 inches tall and 2-3 feet wide. I can pull 14-20 ounces with 40 days of veg out of a 3x3 from 2 seeds. 3 crops per year and it supplies me and my 2 adult sons.
Absolutely use co2 in your grows. Don't listen to everything other people say. Use your own intuition and testing to grow your plants. Learn stuff for yourself by practicing and not just taking people words for it. Co2 is one of the best additions to your grow...its amazing. And no, it doesn't lower quality. I've noticed that all of these experts try to push their own philosophies to the point where they are almost annoying. Again, try things for yourself!
Yeah but if you are gonna use co2 do your research and use it correctly. He meant well by telling people to figure the other limiting factors out first. You probably know better than anyone CO2 can be done wrong.

Great episode!! I wanna grow coffee myself, I’ve grow many pineapples from tops and even pups off of those plants. 2 1/2 years to get a pineapple to fruit from top cutting but pups produce faster. Two different kinds of pups come from them. Some like banana’s that come off the roots and others that grow off the plant itself. They will produce at different speeds as well. Pineapple is great because most people have never eaten a ripe pineapple. Taste much more like a mango that most people know. I’m so looking forward to this houseplant 10x10!

I understand you are trying to show different methods but sometimes you call out that you are or aren't using something so I wanted to confirm if you had changed your practice or not. Additional question: In between grows is it OK to let the living soil freeze? Not solid like an ice cube but more like frozen ground. Sounds like you grow outside in Colorado, how do you prepare the beds for winter? Using the same tent for veg/flower/dry and I want to remove the Earthboxes during the dry. I can't store inside when not in the tent and outdoors is below freezing. Besides slowing microbial activity and possibly reducing the worm population, can you think of other negative impacts? Of course I would let the soil get back to room temperature before retransplanting and I can amend with Rootwise, Kashi and Gnarley.

I tried a 1 gallon for an autoflower, and I was running low on weed. So I tried to keep it small, so I thought I had a 4 foot Substance D autoflower in a 1 gallon pot. That is crushing thanks to 3.0 soil. Never again will I do this.

It taught me that the veg stage is more like the "root" stage.

You’re right! ….Crazy effortless results…. just dumping water in when the bottoms dry and massaging stems out. 1 top dress and you’re done. I run 2 autos per box if I’m doing photos I do 1 per box. But with genetics and quality of autos now, I’m not sure why I ever grow photos anymore.

Always be aware that anytime you supplement C02, And use an air conditioner, That you should have a dual hose portable air conditioner, A Mini split, Or a window split system window unit. Otherwise you are simply venting your CO 2 outside. A split system or dual hose system will keep the CO 2 enriched environment inside and the hot air outside that is being used to pump the compressor . It's usually about 35% more efficient anyway.

Hi there. I've been liking the content- good info that I am sure helps lots of folks grow their own meds. I grow at high altitude in Colorado and feel that CO2 is necessary. The difference in size, density and quality is obvious to me. But that is me.. and every grow room is a little different. There are many factors that lead me to that decision.. running a sealed and controlled environment is a big part of it... I agree that MOST growers won't see the benefit of CO2.. it is expensive and unless you go through all the other steps to have a grow space that makes best use of the addition, you may be just wasting money.. Fresh air ventilation is the best solution for most people. The mushroom CO2 bags are a gimmick. They don't put out enough to make a difference... you need to use tanks or a propane generator if you want to add CO2.
I tried the Exhale Co2 bags and they were a complete waste of money for me. I hung an XL bag (made for a 5x5 area) and their regular size bag in a 3x3 tent that has no exhaust and is located in a closed closet. Co2 went up maybe 100 to 200 for a couple weeks, but then went back to what is was before I added the bags.

Fresh air for the win. I’ll put a window fan in to bring in fresh air from outside into the grow room. Helps control heat and humidity as well and uses way less power than AC.
Get a Gorilla tent. Most definitely worth the extra money as the extra height helps with heat as well.

Autoflowers in a 3x3 bed - it would be great to see how big they get to show the true potential
I actually started creating compost because my parents house is dry clay and salty snow ditches and the year I started messing with my yard they redid the entire street so a lot of my work got renewed and I had to double down but now it's even better and took the waste to try to mitigate that hot dry dead soil and now it's so green and lush wet dark brown soft extreme vigor

Anyone adding co2 please do it properly and use co2 gas from a tank. Exhale bags do not work, simple as that. As stated in the video, co2 is only required if you have hit the dli by using 1000 ppfd and at that point you need to know how much you are adding as it needs to be equivalent to the ppfd ie 1100 ppfd, 1100 ppm (or whatever the measurement is) co2. Has to be a closed system in this instance.
I recently started some dragon fruit and miracle berry plants. Also sprouting some white strawberries. Looking forward to seeing you grow coffee plants and more!

If ya have a short tent you can cut a hole in the bottom for the planter to poke through. Sit the tent on something the height of the pot, supported on each side so the top of the pot is sticking through the hole. You gain the height of the pot back.

I'm definitely with you on C02. But. I've heard magnets near the water you use charges the water and shrinks the molecules and plants drink water faster and more like rain water. So I thought I'd try it. Dude. I've notice a difference in bud size and plants drink water up from the bottom fast. Sounds silly but worth the try.. 🤙. I use a magnetic tool tray near my water..

My very first indoor grow ever, I negelcted my airflow (literally had none lol). I certainly learned my lesson there, you just CAN'T forget about air.
I started a Lemon tree from seed from a grocery store lemon and that has been really fun and i would love to know more on how to take care of it before i kill it lol
Usually citrus from the store are gonna be hybrids. The seed wont produce the same fruit as the parent. Get a big pot you can roll inside during the winter if you get freezes. That lemon plant might work out, but I think you will be happier buying a nice meyer lemon or some other verified cut from a nursery. Citrus doesnt tolerate freeze, so you gotta move em inside a greenhouse or in a window for the winter. Thats just off top of my head, google or youtube homegrown citrus for more accurate info.
When I did my grow outside I would use my charcoal grill positioned near my plants. It also helped me keep warm ✅💯
If you grow inside your house there’s no need for supplement Co2
I average in the 700s in my grow space, just from my family and I breathing inside the house.

If I may offer some advice, get into roasting now before you have a harvest, so you know exactly how you want them when they're ready. Check out the Fresh Roast series of roasters, great starter device and when you decide you want to go deeper and get something like a Behmor or bigger, you can give the Fresh Roast to a friend, and convert (or curse!) them to roasting too. Sweet Maria's is a great place for people getting started, they a retailer of home roasters and beans. They've also had a neat series recently on their YT touring some organic farms in Ethiopia too.

Correct! This is because breath contains 38,000ppm CO2. Atmospheric concentration is usually around 420ppm. It doesn’t take much breathing to substantially raise the concentration however it does get used up fairly quickly by the plants.

I used an earthbox in a 2x2.5 gorilla and definitely needed the extension to grow a monster that took up the whole screen.
I use a scrog screen with my earthboxes. I have two earthboxes in a 3x3 and my plants are typically 10 inches tall and 2-3 feet wide. I can pull 14-20 ounces with 40 days of veg out of a 3x3 from 2 seeds. 3 crops per year and it supplies me and my 2 adult sons.
I get a bit smarter after each FAQ. Awesome stuff!

Absolutely use co2 in your grows. Don't listen to everything other people say. Use your own intuition and testing to grow your plants. Learn stuff for yourself by practicing and not just taking people words for it. Co2 is one of the best additions to your grow...its amazing. And no, it doesn't lower quality.
I've noticed that all of these experts try to push their own philosophies to the point where they are almost annoying. Again, try things for yourself!
Yeah but if you are gonna use co2 do your research and use it correctly. He meant well by telling people to figure the other limiting factors out first. You probably know better than anyone CO2 can be done wrong.

Great episode!! I wanna grow coffee myself, I’ve grow many pineapples from tops and even pups off of those plants. 2 1/2 years to get a pineapple to fruit from top cutting but pups produce faster. Two different kinds of pups come from them. Some like banana’s that come off the roots and others that grow off the plant itself. They will produce at different speeds as well. Pineapple is great because most people have never eaten a ripe pineapple. Taste much more like a mango that most people know. I’m so looking forward to this houseplant 10x10!

Additional question: In between grows is it OK to let the living soil freeze? Not solid like an ice cube but more like frozen ground. Sounds like you grow outside in Colorado, how do you prepare the beds for winter?
Using the same tent for veg/flower/dry and I want to remove the Earthboxes during the dry. I can't store inside when not in the tent and outdoors is below freezing. Besides slowing microbial activity and possibly reducing the worm population, can you think of other negative impacts? Of course I would let the soil get back to room temperature before retransplanting and I can amend with Rootwise, Kashi and Gnarley.

I tried a 1 gallon for an autoflower, and I was running low on weed. So I tried to keep it small, so I thought I had a 4 foot Substance D autoflower in a 1 gallon pot. That is crushing thanks to 3.0 soil. Never again will I do this.
