y’all are truly the greatest source on independent gardening. instead of marketing your mixes you teach everyone how to basically make the products with the knowledge passed on to you. this is why your growth is so exponential and why i will be a lifelong customer. thank you and the build-a-soil family for everything y’all do for the community. much love.

If y'all only knew how much these videos have changed my life in the past year it would really blow your minds. I really want to share my story about what has happened to me in the past 5 years but this is a comment section lol. All i'm gonna say is that because of the knowledge you've instilled I've been able to go from a hospital bed on life support to growing and helping other people with cancer get better. I owe u guys my life in some weird cosmic way. I'm sorry I don't want to sound melodramatic it's just the honest truth💚💯

WOWZER! Searching for organic rice hulls I stumbled on this company to order from. Seeing they have a youtube channel I had to check it out. I am blown away. As a compost "queen" I compost wherever I go and compost everywhere and in multiple ways. As a "master gardener" of over 60 years I've learned a little-lot and love sharing. So I teach compositing and vermiculture and now here I find I have so much more to learn. I love that! Thank you! I'm grateful for my stumbling... I'll be back!

Been using coots since 2014 when i found off GC forums. Its so great to see this video. Amazing for newbies right here. If you have any interest in home gardening, be it medicinal or food and flowers this is great. And this video makes it soooo much easier to understand. Its amazing how far thibgs have come in 8 years. From taking notes from people who posted recipe online and having no idea what i was doing, trying to even source the ingredients to today when you have someone physically showing you while explaining every detail and how to source it. This is one of the best videos ive seen on how to build your own soil.
Absolutly killing brotha thank you for all the hard work.

I've tried telling people these ways and telling people to look up Clackamascoot and seeing how simple organics really is. When someone with a big platform and the ability to communicate things in the simplest of ways is spreading knowledge like this, it just hits so much harder. them rice hulls are what ive been looking for. organic source of silica.... really helps plants in "harsh" conditions by helping with uptake of nutrients and what not, here in the desert the heat stress takes quite a toll.
thanks dude. i will incorporate rice-hulls!

    • @racebiketuner
      @racebiketuner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They work great, but be careful about the source. Lots of pesticides and herbicides are used in commercial rice farming. Those from Indonesia tend to have a higher PPM of rat poison.

Another excellent source of chitin is the clipped ends of mushrooms, what us mycologists refer to as the butts of the fruits. Not on do these clipped ends and a host of different nutrients that were mined by the mycelium Their decomposition attracts mycorrhiza bacteria and fungi and is no different from using Azos

Jeremy, I'd like to express my appreciation for your videos. In my opinion, your vids are the most instructional and well presented on YT. I can't thank you enough for all your effort in producing these.
This, in particular, was a very valuable vid for me. I've been reluctant to purchase the BaS soils due to the shipping charges to the NE US. This vid allows us to build a fantastic soil with local material and fine tuning with the smaller quantities of BaS ingredients, making the creation of a quality soil more affordable. Fantastic!
On another note, on my second grow, this time using BaS Build a Bloom, coconut milk powder, worm castings, and Craft Blend and my plants seem to be Very happy.
Using these products makes it very easy to keep up with their nutritional needs.
    Thanks again Jeremy.

Awesome video! Thank you Jeremy & Clackamas Coot (cool nickname) for working together and sharing your knowledge. You both give this plant the 'coot', or the 'love' it deserves imo. Whatever a 'coot' or clackamas is there's definitely lots of 'love' (or coot) going on that's for sure?

We need a coots worm castings breakdown. Like how he does it start to finish. If I could go to his house to learn I would !

I swear I’ve heard that opening sound design ID - minus the jar lid screwing off. I believe Amazon has the same one. I could be wrong. Otherwise, I wish I had that much space to work with, a dream come true. Super awesome work and yes, the shoveling is how I injured my arm. How did you know…hahahaha

When I was growing indoors in a house i liked to fill as many totes as needed with equal parts then dump each one into a sole lone empty tote, the dumping action of each one basically mixes each one up, and you can go back and forth between the empty one and the totes filled with equal parts. Then at the end you can dump all of them into one pile and barely have to mix anything, on a tarp or garbage bins or whatever next to your grow for minimal transfer. Was cleanest way I could mix in small quarters.

I just made a decent amount of soil sourced some from you guys & some from a local nursery garden center near me i got the moss from them I did do the mineral amendments & clacamus kootz recipe nutrient mix and rice wholes from you I didn’t have access to pumice so I used those hydro clay puffs I may order some from you soon & as I re-amend the soil later on i will maybe remove some of the clay and use the pumice instead, I have a worm bin so I am using some of my own worm castings so it’s looking good I added my own compost as well I’ve made about 55 ish gallons of soil mix I think I probably might need the kelp meal, insect frass and biochar but I haven’t tried growing anything just yet but I’ll keep you posted as I do 😊

I got a cool little idea for you Jeremy. You should get a few bags of KIS water only soil and do a side by side test with your soil that you made here in this video.

I’ve just finished blending my second cubic yard of Coots’ 1:1:1 mix, so that makes me the World’s Expert on Dirt, right? The first yard (27ft^3 or roughly 200 gallons), I did just as Jeremy did, and then I thought a little...
    Things that became clear:
Use an oblong tarp, as big as you can get. For a yard of soil, I used a 12x 20. As you blend, move it from one end to the other, then pull the empty end over while it cooks off.
Use steel garden rakes to move your soil while blending. I shoveled like J. did for the first yard, but mostly raked the second. It was lot less effort and I think it blended more evenly. When you do shovel, use a gardening shovel, not a coal scoop. Toss the mix and flip the shovel over, so that the soil will spread and blend more rapidly. Do this and your lower back and shoulders will thank you.
As you’re blending, spread the pile wide, so as to get an even water distribution. Spray on water about a gallon at a time, and rake it in. This eliminates both dry pockets and soaked areas. Move a bit, rinse, rake, and repeat until done. The even moisture is important.
DO NOT OVERWATER! As you rake in, do a squeeze-check often, and blend your layers. For this, I used one of those 4-tine long rakes. Low on the tarp, work with the tines up to avoid snagging.
Once you’ve spread and moistened it all, pile it up. Horsepower as much as you can with the tarp, shovel a little into the middle, then rake it up hill as high as you can. Pull around the pile, not straight up (much). You’ll be able to make the pile taller, which helps. At this stage, it’s mainly horse it over then rake it up.
Do expect temps as high as 140°f. I’ve turned this batch three times over the course of a week, and it’s still 120°.
Finally, at least once in your life, forage for and blend a batch of your own soil. I’ve learned so much during this project. I won’t tell you it’s easy, but it ain’t too hard. Try it!
