    Raid fleets were great, especially in the early game. You could slip a small ship into a system first, and if a Raid fleet was about to show up, hide it in a nebula and wait for the raid fleet and the defending fleet to rip each other to shreds before sending in your main force to mop up any survivors. Ah, good times...

    I really do miss the raid fleets. I Loved just having 3 way space battles and they really just added that little extra to detail and were really fun. Plus it was a cool way to show off other factions ships and yeh they were a bit exploitable via hiding from them and letting them attack the enemy but I feel like that just adds more rather than takes as it makes u feel like a smart and competent space commander, using the enemy of your enemy to your advantage.

    fun look back, I remember a lot of these features from early builds. particularly the flak exploding around space ships with lasers which i thought was a interesting aesthetic idea, but not well implemented as it would erupt your fleet into a flurry of explosions every time they see a couple of fighters. Other things I recall were crimson vsds being very OP and Trioculus being a non-playable warlord faction before his recent re-addition which made me laugh at the time because i actually recognized him from his books.
    But of all the cut content, what I really REALLY want to know is why the infantry exploding animation from artillery was removed? i loved that shit! Literally blew me away, no mod for this game has ever included something like that

  • @zaleost
    @zaleost ปีที่แล้ว

    I do miss Raid Fleets, but even back when I first noticed they had gone I could very clearly see why they were cut. You're often almost forced to use them to cheese space battles as when attacking, if you didn't get out of the way and let them try their luck with the defenders they would just hit you in the rear, While as the defender they were naturally going to run in to the attackers path and weaken or even destroy them.
    If they were to be re-added, the main improvements I feel they would need is an alternative entrance zone from where the attacker is, as well as not being fixed on heading towards then defenders star bases. It would also be good if they could be tied more to the galactic map as well, so are more likely to appear if a 3rd faction also has a route to the planned being attacked and maybe even have the fleet actually be the one they have stationed nearby (although I suspect this would be a nightmare or even impossible to code in to the game).

    It really is a shame that the raid fleets were cut.
    I would suggest tying them to "high-value" planets like major shipyards and capitals to remove the RNG of the system? Or tie them to specific planets that were high-traffic areas in the lore? The final fleet battle over Kuat is probably a highlight of Star Wars gaming in general. It'd be really cool to see it spiritually return in some form.
    Even if it just has to be predetermined fleets on predetermined planets, i'd still love to see it come back some day. Maybe in FOTR or RR where there's a more confined set of units?

    My thoughts on each feature
    Friendly Fire: I'm good without having to deal with killing my own troops
    Faction Limits: SO glad the Devs still update EAW
    Diplomacy: In a way I think this could of worked, but would of been an absurd amount of work
    EOTH structures: Honestly the new stuff is an upgrade
    Flat laser explosions: Glad you fixed it
    Mega Mazer: Ok, I'll take your word for it Corey
    Buildable Fighters: Ok this will be a long rant, I think this could be brought back, make it an option in how you build your ships, with a set of fighters or fighterless and the cost changes based on if the choice, and for fighter squads, they're cheap, but can't travel to another planet themselves, same with ground stuff, you have to load them onto a ship with a hyperdrive, this would make your battle plans have more you have to think about as ships will be set to a limited amount of space for fighters or ground troops
    Fog of War: Just let it go,
    Raid fleets: Ok, I want this back, it adds so much to battles, and the way to decide what faction its from is based on which has ships on a planet right next to the one you're fighting on and how many, and what ships are they, although I know this would most likely be a nightmare to code in

    • @CoreyLoses
      @CoreyLoses  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You cannot make that option. You'd have to make two versions of every ship which are identical except for the lack of fighters, doubling the build bar and doubling the AI's load for units to consider. You also cannot load fighters and ground units like that. With non-hyperspace capable units any single ship in the fleet being able to jump means they all can (except in retreat). You don't have the ability to add them to specific ships. Same with ground units. You can make them attach to flagship as their transport, but then they still need a regular default transport and they'll all attach to the same ship. You can also stat the transports so the space units and ground units are all combined, but what has a whole bunch of other unresolvable issues.

    Hey Corey, I was wondering if Empire at War has the function where you could send two fleets to a planet and when the one fleet gets there before the other. Then when in the battle there would be a timer in the match that counts down when your second fleet would arrive. I only ask because it seems like it is doable from the random fleet thing. But then again, I assume the code for the random fleets are like the same one as the flag units when defending a planet, and you have a space station there? I have been in many situations where this would help me in a battle. On that thought, would there be a way you could build units while on the galactic map that are the units that will fly in to defend if attacked?

    • @CoreyLoses
      @CoreyLoses  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the random fleet thing was just spawns, it wasn't about pulling in units from another location. Being able to maintain a list of units at other planets and then calling them to the battle by spawning new ones and deleting the originals is possible, but fleets that are in transit to a planet would actually be the least possible thing to do that with, since they're not attached to a trackable position.

    if fog of war is brought back i dont think fog should be nearly as oppressive in the fights like why can some ships in other mods fire farther than it can see? if it cant detect that far it wouldnt be able to fire that far ( in space with nothing in the way at least)

    Thrawn's Revenge is awesome but I was thinking about why mods didn't leave me with the same or greater feel than playing the base game. Very few have an actual campaign like scenario beyond galactic conquest and non combat misc such as corrupting planets and the black market to buy upgrades otherwise, to me, EaW feels more like a chess game than it should. By that I mean that it loses diversity in gameplay and becomes highly repetitive.

      Thrawn's Revenge has a lot more research/events/upgrades than the base game, and if you're looking for story campaigns, the historical conflict maps in Fall of the Republic are basically all story campaigns with multiple missions at this point.

      the way around that was to send in a single ship first, and then hide it. and if it came under attack, send in another ship on the other side of the map and then hide it somewhere else to make sure you weren't out of the game. then sit back and relax as the two enemy fleets mince each other

    As the voice of dissent I hated raid fleets, they were only a way for the game to cheat you out of a win. Good Riddance! You've just won a hard fought victory, by use of superior tactics, at the cost that some of your ships are so badly damaged their engines have been destroyed, but you've managed to just keep them alive, so well done. Fortunately, you've secured planet's orbit and you'll get a chance to salvage those damaged ships. Oh no, what's that a raid fleet is going to over power your survivors. You can retreat, but not for 3 minutes. During which you'll lose the chance to salvage those ships can't jump, and likely a few of the rear-guard ships. If you even have time to turn your surviving ships to assemble one to face the new angle of attack. f it must be included in the game to meet demand, I would ask please to have it as an option, like "cruel A.I." that can be turned off in the main game.

      Hi @kR-qj7rw that was not my experience, happy yours was different though. However if the mechanic was reintroduced, I think it should be optional for those who don't want it, there seems no good reason to make it mandatory again.

    I really disliked the raid fleets and I am really glad, they are gone for now. They really ruined the strategical approach to the game. Some people might have liked to use them to weaken or defeat foes, but I always felt this was kind of cheating and never felt quite right. Plus, they happened way too often. I really hope if they come back, we can at least optionally turn them off, because I like the less-random nature of the game right now.

      plan around the raid fleets. always send in a single ship first, and wait to see if the raid fleet will arrive. if it does, plan your tactics accordingly. it used to be a great way to tip the balance of an otherwise unwinnable scenario, especially as weaker early-game factions like the NR
