Historically, among some small communities of Sephardim and Italkim (particularly the Tripoli community) there were vigils after a brit milah to both see the child and to keep demons (shedim and mazikin) from stealing the foreskin. Said foreskins are said to be consumed in folk magic to cure barrenness in women (a sympathetic connection between the penis and fertility, probably). Which might be why the estrie has it; most vampires and vampire-like monsters tend to be sterile. Though this adventure is mostly based on Ashkenazi folklore.
I was JUST thinking, I just started with his Google Drive "study list" (the book Western Esotericism: A Guide for the Perplexed) and considered how interesting it could be to run a game where "magic" is largely based off of historical magic and mysticism. Of course actual Jewish mysticism is it's own beast...
If you can put aside the stupidity of the author's antics IRL, then I highly recommend The Invisible College RPG by Well of Urd Press. It's basically about playing Modern Occultists who belong to a secret society that seeks to fight for Humanity's Spiritual Evolution and against other secret societies that seek to subvert or even control Humanity's spiritual existence.
This adventure looks awesome! I appreciate the strong formatting used for it. If it gets a second version, it'd be interesting to see some further tweaks/additions to make it even more usable/gameable. Overall, what I appreciate most is that it's something quite different from standard fantasy fare or the gonzo stuff.
I really like it when fantasy material explores different cultural folklore. There is a lot of great stuff from all around the world that so many people know nothing about that is fantastic for use in RPG campaigns.
I think highlighting the missing information needs you have missed the Jewish way of doing things. To get important truths you must study the other passages carefully and see what they apply and look for hidden layers of meaning. Only this way can you gain the full wisdom of the supplement. To fully embrace the Jewish Spirit you have to make people work for knowledge that would otherwise be made apparent.😅 Any Talmud scholar would have no trouble running this adventure exactly as written.
I mean, I'm aware of the practice of circumcision, I just don't know how it connects to this particular character. Is there a story or legend it's referencing?
...you know, I'm not sure. But I have a relative that tends to meme about stereotypes. And aside from the way Bris were supposedly performed in the old days, I have a friend whose grandmother also saved his foreskin in a similar way (they found it in an envelope in her belongings after she passed), so I'm unsure if it was just a religious thing. Doesn't help that his grandmother was known as the neighborhood witch.
I love this video. It is so good to see Jewish game content getting some attention. If you are a Jewish RPG player or designer, come join the Jewish RPG Workshop on Facebook. facebook.com/share/g/1BEQ9UWZD1/

Absolutely love that Yochai created this. Thanks for making this video Ben!

Resurrection restores all missing body parts. Cured.
0:28 and in fact, Cairn has Knave heritage. It was playing Cairn that introduced me to Knave 2e.
Knave/MR and Into the Odd iirc
This sounds really cool. Ever since finding Justin Sledge's channel, Esoterica, I've been wanting a game like this.
Seekers Beyond the Shroud is a solo rpg based on real esoterica.

Yochai! Love his stuff. Great review Ben.

This is a very interesting new flavor of fantasy with the Jewish influences. Thank you for sharing.
Well this sounds intriguing! Thanks for bringing so many little adventures and worlds to light that might be totally missed otherwise.
Thanks for your review. I really appreciate how you present it, no rush but well explained.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This sounds intriguing and looks highly convertible. I run BRP style Swedish OSR (Dragonbane), and I can work with this.
"satanic panic has been proven wrong!"
10:37 looks like a Jewish Easter egg (a nod to circumcision).
Yeah. Definitely this.
5:50 I guess that's a matter of perspective. I'd be rather miffed by a person drinking my blood, however pleasant they may be
Jewish Mysticism and D& D. Before watching your review I have to ask. Is there a Golem?
2:17 Called it!
Love this book! Got it from the kickstarter
..and one that is (no longer) hidden under the village

The foreskin thing might allude to the story of David? It's weird if it doesn't have more than that mentioned honestly
10:36
Foreskin wrapped in paper....
Book based in Jewish myths...
What do you mean you don't understand?

Ben Milton hasnt read Cairn
............ 🤔
There's a lot of OSR systems I haven't read
@QuestingBeast I was just surprised because Knave and Cairn are almost always mentioned in the same breath. No judgement, just surprised. 😊
@@QuestingBeastcan't wait to see what 2025 you review
Ben, you may have forgotten that you covered Cairn in your video The Weird World of DnD zines part 3! May 13th, 2021.
@eilyawen oh wow, you're right!
Thanks for covering this.
Glad you liked it!
Seems like a good fit for Lamentations of the Flame Princess given that it's main setting is heavily based on an alternative historical setting.
I can't get over how good that name is. I laughed the moment I read the title and saw the thumbnail

Drinking game: take a shot for every 5 seconds before QuestingBeat mentions Knave in a video. You can do a pint for every minute if you're teetotal
So six shots and no beer?
I'll do both 😋
Why you gotta hustle shame? This man is a blessing to the industry.
You so mad lmao
@@eyehatescott mad, naw, just real talk. It’s all good.
But go on, show us how the internet hurt you…
Are there different rules for female characters?
Judaism meets dnd
Also known as: the elder scrolls 3 morrowind
You’re gonna have to explain this one to me. All I can say is Morrowind is the best
Oy vey
Lot of very jewsy flavor. :)

Petty…but I applaud you none the less.
