That would be a very short video because only 3 states offer 1.5x pay after 8 hours and only California offers 2.0x pay after 12 hours and on the 7th consecutive day of work.

Hi I love how detailed and transparent you are ! I’m just wondering though what type of nurse are you ? Are you an advanced practicing nurse ? Travel nurse? or a registered nurse with certifications?
Hi, I’m just an ER Nurse. Our hospital system doesn’t provide differentials for different specialties. Pretty much any nurse working for Kaiser’s inpatient units can earn this much money.
Question for you. I remember from one of your past videos that you said APRN's like NP's & CRNA's don't qualify for the California OT laws. If you are an NP, technically you still are an RN so are you allowed to work as an RN also if you wanted to make extra money still as long as you don't blur the lines btwn practice authority btwn the two professions (RN & NP)? If so you could work at a place like Kaiser as an RN then on a few of your off days work as an NP somewhere else to keep your skills up to date provided you have a schedule like yours?
APRN's DO qualify for OT if they are not salaried employees. And yes, they are able to work as RNS if they choose to because they have RN licenses as well. I work with a few NPs that are staff RNs in our ED and have not yet left because there making more money working in our department than they would somewhere else working as APRNs.
Thank you for sharing your video! Your template is so nice with all those days off! Hoping to go 24 hr or perdiem in icu (from 32). My template is all over the place and feel I barely have days off. Did you arrange to have your templateschedule that way, or did the new role already come with that nice template?
I started as a 32-hr evening shift RN with max of 4 consecutive days off. Then, we had this thing called "The war room" where our director allowed us to add, remove, or shift the data around in our template/schedule. So I dropped two days from my template, went from 32 hours a week to 24 hours a week, with 7 days of in between. Then 1.5 years later this 12-hr shift template came up and I had enough seniority to get selected for it. But now, there's a new template I've got my eye on, and if I get it, I'll only be working 5 8-hr shifts every two weeks, 20 hours a week. The reason why I stick to working where I'm at is because they make it so easy for us to get a shift we're happy with.
@@NursesToRiches that’s awesome! Thank you for sharing ✊🏽. I’ve only been at Kaiser in the ICU for 2 months, but was wondering when would be a good time to ask my manager for a 24 hr template ? Is there a policy on went to go per diem or change the template for kaiser NorCal?
@@oliverlikescheetos They usually ask that you wait 6 months before you apply for a different template. But it's not required that you do so. Also, you should be able to see if there's another shift available because the nurses on the unit you work for should be notified before anyone outside of the unit. You can speak with your manager to find out if there are any other shifts available.
Yeahhhh, you can see that even if they were to take the full amount of taxes and max out my 401k here in California I would still be going home with at least 8k (net).
Lmao. We were all in your place at one point in our lives. I actually almost quit nursing school right before my last semester. It's a good thing I didn't because it got me to where I am today.
I switched because I wanted to work fewer days and have either the same amount of days off as my previous 8hr shift template, or more. And every time a new 8hr shift position was posted, although they had fewer total hours of work per pay period, they scheduled days were all over the place (eg: ON Monday and Tuesday, OFF Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday, ON Saturday, OFF Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, ON Friday, Saturday). I like being off as many days as possible because it gives me more time to spend with my family and work on the youtube channel. So, as soon as this 12hr shift position became available I took it because I knew I would be working only 5 days every two weeks, while still earning more per hour, and having an easier workload because night shift is easy compared to every other shift.
What does it mean to prebook OT shifts? I usually get text messages when shifts are available which is less predictable. On KP schedule are you able to sign up for shifts? My facility doesn’t do that for us :/
The staffing office will give us a call if we've put in our availability on our scheduling calendar and ask us if we'd like to book ourselves for extra hours of work, days to weeks in advance.

When you go "exempt" your employer not to deduct federal or state taxes from your paycheck. So, for example, let's say you make $1,000 before before federal and state taxes are taken out of your paycheck. After taxes are deducted, you are left with something like $700 (just an example but this would include federal income taxes, state income taxes, social security, Medicare, and state disability insurance). If you ask them not to deduct federal taxes, instead of getting paid $700 you would get something like $900 (again just an example) because they would only deduct social security, Medicare, and state disability insurance from your pay, but not federal or state income taxes.
We all gotta do it if we wanna reach some level of financial independence. Even if the plan isn't to retire early, just having the option to get up and leave your job when you've had enough of it because you know you have a nice cushion to fall on is reason enough for me and Monica to continue hustling while the opportunity is there.
We go tax exempt once a year on a pay period where we pick up a lot of hours because we want to get more money into our bank account. We are typically able to go tax exempt once or twice a year and break even with our taxes at the end of the year.
Hey Daniel, they absolutely hire nurses with their ADNs. I work with many nurses that have their ADNs. There is no degree differential at Kaiser, so an ADN nurse will make the same as a BSN nurse.
@@NursesToRiches hey that’s awesome. Thanks for the reply and I subbed. Off the top of your head, if I am admitted into a BSN program after Adn should I wait until I get employed first to potential find an employer to pay for it or should I just not waste time and go directly into the adn BSN bridge
@@danielliu6102 Yes, I would 100% recommend that you wait until you're employed. Most employers want their nurses to get advanced degrees and they'll pay for your BSN if you choose to pursue that route.
Hi Nurses to Riches, firstly I love your videos. I was just wondering is the $93/hr base rate because you are per diem? You do not seem to be working at Kaiser for 15 years to get the full time 93/hr base rate (you look way too young lol).
My base is $86.02/hr because I'm an RN III. My night shift differential is $12.25/hr. That brings my total hourly rate to $98.27/hr. I have 8 years of experience as RN but am currently a step 5 at Kaiser.
I was making $98/hr on night shift, I just went back to evenings and I'm making $93/hr. I'm a staff nurse, no special training or license required for this hourly rate.
Hi Jason, I saw in ur video that u are working now 30hrs or 32hrs a week? and that is considered as Full time in Kaiser permanente, is that mean if you will work ur 33rd hour and even withour reaching yet your 40th hours in a week you are going to be paid overtime? because you are signed for 32hr week?
I've spoken with the manager who is in charge of hiring RNs. He told me it's been extremely challenging trying to keep up with the amount of Nurses that have been leaving the department. He said he's not getting enough applications from Nurses interested in working in the ED. They've just recently hired over 30 travelers because they couldn't get enough permanent nurses.
You can go exempt permanently if you'd like. But that would mean you would have to pay all of the taxes you owe when you file your tax returns by the month of April (this is the month where the government collects what is owed to them or returns what is owed to employees who had too many taxes deducted from their paychecks).
Hey! Please tell me what I'm doing wrong with my math... Obviously, your exempt net income is $11,361. And, like you said your non-exempt net income would've been $8,287. The difference of the two is $3,074 - and this figure equals your FIT and SIT. If you divide this number by your gross income, you get 0.1988...How are you taxed at only 20%?!
@@NursesToRiches Thanks for the reply! The 46% includes the FIT, SIT, Medicare, Social Security, etc...I guess it'll be easier for me to ask, "What is your tax rate?" I just want to know what percentage your FIT and SIT are.
@@andrewmchugh1602 oh, gotcha! Yeah federal and state combined are around 22.9% ((2476+1067)/15,464)). The reason why it's so low is because of my high contribution to my 401k (17%) and my FSA ($132.21).
But, then your new "gross" income would be...$12,718 ($15460 - $2743), which is still a significant amount. If you continue on this track, you should be in the top tax brackets; either 32% or 35%.

Hey man. Can an adn get hired at Kaiser ? I have bsn plans but I am in an adn program right now
Hey Daniel, they absolutely hire nurses with their ADNs.
Work hard and keep busy while young and retire early.
That's the plan 👍
Nice to retire early and enjoy your time with your family.
Absolutely, family is what it's all about.
@@NursesToRiches thank you for the reply Jason keep up the great work.
@@adarshsidhu529 You're welcome!
Hi brother,
Are you getting 90plus dollars/ hour? Did you take any special courses? Or just RN? Thanks
Has anyone else that’s non kaiser work a run like this ? I never heard of a 4 hour shift ? Is this because your specialty is ER ?
Yes, but I've worked in other ERs where they allow you to come in for 4 hours of OT. Although, I don't know of any other hospital that offers run pay.
Why don't they hire more RNs so they don't have to pay so much overtime? Surely it's busting their budgets to pay out so much OT, right?
I've spoken with the manager who is in charge of hiring RNs. He told me it's been extremely challenging trying to keep up with the amount of Nurses that have been leaving the department. He said he's not getting enough applications from Nurses interested in working in the ED. They've just recently hired over 30 travelers because they couldn't get enough permanent nurses.
How can you just go exempt like that
You can go exempt permanently if you'd like. But that would mean you would have to pay all of the taxes you owe when you file your tax returns by the month of April (this is the month where the government collects what is owed to them or returns what is owed to employees who had too many taxes deducted from their paychecks).
The $4800 was for 2 weeks?net
Yes
Why Monica earns way more than you per hour? Experience?
She works per diem. I am a regular staff.
@@NursesToRiches that makes sense.
Hey, thanks for the question. Yeah.. You're not diving by my gross of $15,460, you're dividing it by my net. 1-($8,287/$15,460)=0.46=46%.
@@NursesToRiches Oh, are you filing jointly as a married couple? Either way, congrats on your success!
This guy and his wife are going to single handedly going to end the nursing shortage in California! 😂
Haha 😂 on a channel with 4200 subs, I don't think so lol
Even though we know we can, we shouldn't. Not safe for patient
Ridiculous.
How'd you find this video, lol.
@@NursesToRiches man I’m subscribed to the channel lol. I always miss your videos for some reason but I caught this one today and now your other videos are showing up in my recommendations.
@@KeanBurke lol that's what's up. I gotta make it big on TH-cam so I can retire earlier than the 10 years I set as a goal.
My man!!!! 🤑🤑
Hah! Thanks dude!
Why favourite nurse educator 🥰🥰👑💞😁✨✨😘🌹
I hope that you are done working for the year! 🤣🤣🤣
Hah! Those were my exact thoughts when the run was over. It's crazy how I'm working with several nurses that have worked more than 90 days in a row and they basically have no life outside of work. I can't see myself ever doing that.
Though you did really good job to earn this money, I’m not sure if it’s healthy.
Honestly, going in for 4 hours on your days off, when you are only scheduled to work 5 days every two weeks, really isn't difficult at all. You still have time to go to the gym, eat healthy, and take good care of yourself.
👀
👁️👁️
dude you're absolutely killing yourself to make a buck
Not at all. This is something I've never done before and will never plan to do regularly. I worked an average of less than 18 hours per week this year and am on track to earn over $160k, even after taking more than 5 months off from work.
@@NursesToRiches how is this possible lol
@@BigTroubleD working 12+ hour days to earn time and a half from the 8th hour to the 12th hour, and double time after the 12th hour. Also working "runs" to get premium pay for every day of work after the 5th consecutive day.
I’ve worked 28 days in a row. Weekdays 1 job and weekends another. Both 8 hour shifts. I’m currently going to RN school and want to get into Kaiser to work how I normally work . And take longer vacations in between. So excited!
You will do great. Just keep at it and don't give up in nursing school. You will be tested for sure but it'll all be worth it.
