Replace your motorcycle clutch basket cushions, Yamaha AT-1, CT-1

  • In this video I replace the clutch basket cushions on a Yamaha CT-2 Enduro. Using the bridgeport milling machine. I use new cushions from Sumo Rubber in England, and 1/4 inch rivets that are one inch long from Grainger supply. This will give the clutch a new feel again.

    Good Job! I know you were hinting about this and now surprise - you have a nice video! I've been doubting my CT1 hub sitting on the bench the past week, and now I'm going to do mine also...

      Not too bad of job. Wish I could find the correct rivets, just having trouble, so next best thing is just size up a tiny bit.

    When filing the marks off the basket, if you put the file the across to the opposite side of the basket, it ensures that you are holding it perfectly flat ;)

    FASCINATING!!! I love this kind of information. I wish I had the tools and knowledge to do this kind of stuff. THANK YOU for sharing. I'm looking at acquiring a 82 Suzuki GS1100e that has some clutch rattle. The gentleman has purchased the spring rebuild kit, hopefully there aren't other hidden problems!

      Hey thanks for joining me in the shop, those GS Suzuki's were great bikes, not much of a street rider anymore but sure rode a lot of them when I worked in a Suzuki dealership in the 70's.       Thanks again Dale! Glad I found your channel, I'm sure to learn a Lot from it. I never had dirt bikes growing up, all my friends did and they all shared, we took turns 😂😢 I finally got a little 5hp minibike probably at the age of 13, it was Fast, I could keep up with my friends on their XR75's. Once I got my license I started buying street bikes. I'm 57 now and have had a LOT of bikes, just sold my Harley Road King Custom about 3yrs ago. I MISS riding.     Great tutorial Dale. I was saying 'back it up with a socket' and you did. 1.5 x diameter is the formula for the amount of rivet protrusion prior to reacting. It looked good to me. Enjoyable to watch as ever.

      Yeah I had all the data in the Machinery handbook, just wish I could find 7/32 or 5.5mm rivets, would make the job very simple. Whats up with Sumo rubber closing. Has covid caused a lot of closings over there too.

      @@montana2strokeracer I'm not sure about that particular company Dale. There is quite a bit of economic downturn over here at the moment, Covid definitely had a huge effect on small businesses and now the cost of energy and just about everything else is being affected by the war in Ukraine.
      I'll keep my eyes open for 5,5mm (7/32) rivets for you.

    Thanks for the video Dale, I had to smoothen mine out where the plates hit too but the play wasn't that much on the basket so I didn't have to do what you did, but is good to know.

    Great video, Dale. I finally understand how these work! Makes way more sense to replace rubber/viton instead of the entire assembly. For those of us lacking a mill I imagine a drill press would work. Use of a reamer was a nice touch. Even riveting looked not as tough as I expected. Look forward to what you find on Suzuki.

      Thanks Jim, if you can find the correct rivets, you wouldn't have to drill, hard to find 7/32- or 5.5-mm rivets. I'm sure you can do it.

      Hi, thanks for the tip, I have been getting them from Sumo in the UK, but since they have closed a few of us in the states are working on an alternative. The rivets are no problem, I have a bag of 100. I try to find parts over here if I can, the shipping is so expensive and time consuming. Thanks again, and thanks for watching the channel.

      @@montana2strokeracer shipping time for yambits is real fast. 2 to 3 days but its a pea size distance in comparison to shipping to the us.import cost is to bad also for me since they left the eu.but you have the tools to make those rubbers yourself so go for it! I wish i got that kind of equipment.

      Hi Taylor, thanks for the kind words, I got the rivets for this project from Grainger Co. They are Hanson rivet's part number 6LA70, these were oversized, so you have to do what I did in the video to increase the size of the holes. I have since found and used some on a TS 125 Suzuki that I picked up from my local farm store, they are rivets for holding sickle mower blades on. They are Harvest king, 904-006, they fit that bike perfect without drilling over size. I have not tried them with the Yamaha clutch yet. Next time I do one I will try them.     curious as to why the need to go up in size on the rivets?

      Its all about finding the correct ones. I cant find 7/32 or 5.5mm so I just went to the next size that I could find. 1/4 inch. If you can find the right ones no drilling required. Thanks for your comment, and thanks for watching.

    Does the shape of a rivet matter?

      I would say as long as the head clears the hub it should be ok. Better if flat like the originals though.
