    That's how I do them too Dale, I have a big brass acorn nut from an ancient plumbing system as a solder crucible. I was meaning to make a bird's cage tool for the inner cable ends but as ever, time got in the way!
    Best wishes, Dean.

      Hey great minds think the same. It works, yeah, I have thought about making one too, just really don't do too many cables these days. Thanks for hanging out with me Dean.

    Hello, I found this video to be very helpful. little backstory. I bought a beautiful 1982 Yamaha xj550 with 3.4k miles. A collector owned it and had it modded out. I cleaned out my fuel system. Carbs were upgraded from stock 28mm to 30mm 2930 AMAL concentric carbs. They arent on a rail, they are all separate. Tuned them right, however the throttle cables are not exactly precise and like to pop out the tops of 2 of the carbs and 1 of the splices. I need to build a 1 into 4 cable. The old cable is my issue when it comes to idling. Your method seems to be what I'm looking for, I just need to learn how to splice 1 into 4.

      Thanks Jack, I am glad you found some value in this video. Sounds like you have a plan and will be able to build your cable to your requirements. Those old Yamahas were great bikes, bet that one will run with the best of them.

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Vincent, you bet, do it all the time. If all that's wrong is some fraying of the inner cable, just make a new inner.

    is it ever a good idea to grease the cable before assembly? or use nylon,teflon inners

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, on these for sure, this is steel wire and no Teflon liners. I just like to get the cable made before I introduce grease to the cable.

    Would it be easier to thread into the tapered end and slide it along?

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  ปีที่แล้ว

      It would Andy, but the tapered end is where the frayed wire and the solder form sort of a ball to keep the wire from pulling out of the cable end. Thanks for hanging out with me in the shop.

    Another of life's mysteries solved. Never knew one could MAKE cables. Is it possible to make 3 way cables for oil pumps?

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jim, not really a mystery, but something we don't have to do, as much as we once did. There are a lot of places that have cables available for a wider selection of bikes now. You can also call Motion Pro and tell them what your application is, and they will make one for you. Thats how they got their start in the bike business. But I like to keep my hand in the making of cables, it just is a lost practice anymore. I try to keep my inventory of parts and cable components up, so I can make one off cables like the one I'm doing here. You bet, 3 way is no problem, just make each one separate and assemble them.

  • @frankdillon6127
    @frankdillon6127 ปีที่แล้ว

    could try solder the end so wires dont fray. sand down to fit the hole.

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you could and should, especially if you can't afford to cut anymore off. The hole on those little ends are really close to the size of the cable, no room to spare.

    When shopping online for throttle wire and cable housing how do I determine what size to get?

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, I just measure the old inner cable, then buy the cable and casing for that size. Most throttle cables I make are 1.5 mm. Clutch and brake are bigger.

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't have any way to determine how much pull without having the bike here. Length is just that. If you had that info, I could make a determination. However, I don't take on anymore work till fall.
