This is yet another magnificently mesmerizing performance by the pristine "Princess of the Pianoforte", the amazing Anna Fedorova! Anna is truly a precious treasure -- a priceless gift to the music world!
After listening to several other interpretations of this piece, finding them vaguely unsatisfactory, I landed on this one. I find it absolutely convincing. Flexible tempo, yes -- it's a Fantasia, so it should sound as though the player is improvising -- but no Chopinesque rubato. Just the right amount of pedal; remember that while Mozart's fortepiano didn't have the prolonged resonance of a Steinway, it equally didn't have very good dampers, so the effect was much the same. I'll admit to bias; she plays it almost exactly as I used to, on a good day at least. But there's no mistaking that shiver up the spine, relaxing into a sense of security, that says, yes, this rendition is RIGHT. Thank you!
