    Messing around with the Zoom MS-70CDR pedal for the first time. I play through all the presets!
    This pedal really brings the Rhodes to life. It sounds great on synths too! Definitely worth checking out if you want a great pedal for the Rhodes.

    I had a MK II stage piano many years ago, and when my band played live, I never used the Rhodes without a DOD Stereo Chorus 565. Flangers and phasers were too extreme for most of what we used the Rhodes for, and the DoD pedal added that ambiance...

    Just wait until you get in and edit. So many possibilities. And they don't all have to be over the top. You can use 2 delays, 2 chorus, phaser, and reverb, simultaneously, but you can control the mix of each separately, for sounds that are intense yet subtle. Or do a thousand other variations. It's actually pretty hi-fi too.

    If you plan to buy this pedal but you have a passive rhodes (stage and 54 models), beware that the pedal wants a line level input! It sounds terribly noisy and distorted if you run a passive input directly into it. The best choice would of course be a nice preamp, but I went for a cheap Mooer Pure Boost pedal, and it actually works pretty fine as well

      @LWmusik Dude, where are getting your information from? The Zoom is a standard guitar pedal. It is not designed to need a line level input. Guitars are passive instrument level output. Great review! You have a stage Mark II, right? So what preamp are you using? You say it has a built in tremolo, is it an stereo output ? (although only one jack in the input of the pedal)...

    • @ToddPentney
      @ToddPentney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this case I just used a mono out of the retroflyer. I’ve always liked Rhodes tremolo in mono. Just a personal thing. If i was using a keyboard/synth that sounds better in stereo I would probably run stereo in. The ms-70cdr knows when it’s getting a mono Input so I think both would sound great.

      Edit my question, I watched the full video, and now I know you are using a retroflyer as well!!, you say the tremolo is mono... but is actually stereo going out from the reteoflyer... does it make sense?

    • @ToddPentney
      @ToddPentney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Ya, I might be wrong depending if the retro flyer signal sums to mono or just isolates one side.. but I assume if you use a TS instrument cable from the retro you're just getting one side of the the stereo output (which just sounds like a regular mono tremolo to my ears). You could use a TRS cable on the retro flyer to a dual TS adaptor at the multistomp end. Then you'd be getting the analog stereo tremolo in all it's glory. But I think at the end of the day. If it sounds sounds good, it is good! I don't know if I'd be able to tell the difference between an analog stereo trem or one generated in the multistomp. It's definitely worth checking it out though.

      You'll have to route an FX send or audio output from the Keyscape channel to a physical audio output on your audio interface. • @ToddPentney
      @ToddPentney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends. For live amplification I prefer to use a guitar amp with clear low end (Fender Twin is great) or just a nice powered monitor for a cleaner sound. Recording is different. I usually just record direct in. I'm using the Retro Flyer preamp (Avion Studios). In this example I'm running straight into my UAD audio interface from the preamp. No amp. A lot of people prefer to grab the audio straight off the harp inside the Rhodes because it can help reduce noise. But that isn't always necessary either. I think running the MS-70CDR for various amp FX direct is a great option. Another option would be to record it completely dry and then apply amp modelling using plugins in your DAW.

But a good Digital keyboard might be more useful. Like a Nord, Great organs, Pianos, synths and Rhodes. Still not as good as a real Rhodes but way more useful overall. And most people won't be able to tell the difference. If you enjoy playing the real thing that's the best reason to get a Rhodes. Also consider Software instruments. Keyscapes by spectrasonics has some fantastic sounding Rhodes Mk1, Mk2 and some modern Rhodes by Vintage Vibe, Wurlys, CP70s and Pianos..
