Ditto ! We are (C) in Scotland 🏴 Can do some (F) sometimes aka 61 is "16C". But when US Folk state its as cold as '20F' or will be in the 90sF my mind goes ??? 😵💫 Re Celsius 0 C if Freezing and 100 C is Boiling. (Easier to get your head around !) Had to look Fahrenheit up : 32 F Freezing, remembered that just . . . But '212 F' as Boiling, What ! Errr ? Had to Google that. 🤭 For us Brits in the UK, 'F' makes no sense. (We went from F to C in back in '1962'. Before my time ! So that's why I didn't get it. 🙄 Wonder why some Countries use 'C' and others 'F'. Beats me. . . Probably something about the World being Pink (under UK Rule at one time.) Not anymore ! 🤭 My Bees are going through your eight Steps gradually. Glad they are still alive. Hope your Bees are doing great David. Can't wait for true Spring to happen ! Miss doing my Bees between Sept and mid March : apart from O/Aing all in mid Dec ! 😎
Hey David, my girls have been out and about, we have two ash trees in the front yard and the bees were working it. But today it's 39 and rain. They're in the hive and I'm sitting in front of the wood stove. We'll wait and work another day. It's all fun!😊
Over the years I have learned that I can take any dead out boxes and turn them on end and leave them in the yard on a stand. If there are more than one box I leave a space between them and put the inner cover and lid on top. This keeps the rain out and the mice do not move in due to it not being closed up. If there is still honey in the frames I take them back home and put them in the freezer to keep them safe until I can use them in splits or as late season feed for a hungry colony. Thanks for Great advise David. Jim Kiefer, S.E. Missouri
Hello dear friend, Greetings from a beautiful village where is located in the north of Shahrud or Shahrood in Semnan province in Iran, my village's name is Abarsej or in slang is called the Everci, and i have to say that most of our village's population have been bee keeping for many years, maybe five hundred years, I'm not sure but i know, they have learned this career from their ancestors and now, this routine continues
VIDEO IDEA: How to place multiple hives in the same area? I'm expanding this year from 1 to 3 hives and want them in the same place, but I want to avoid flight path confusion ir what I don't know that I don't know! ❤
Ive been storing empty honey frames in my basement over winter. Ive noticed that a frame that wasnt used for honey yet had very dried brittle wax . Can the bees still use this wax?
Hey David! My name is Jason! Thank you for all the wonderful videos. Sadly I loss my hive this winter. Mite level was low, they had plenty of food (2 deeps full of honey) and I even feed them a sugar patty. They appeared like they never clustered when it got cold. In fact I had larvae at all stages and even bees that seemed to be birthing. The queen was very active. I was wondering if you could do a video on understanding why bee hives die. I am confused why they died and why they seemed not to cluster? By the way this happened in late fall early December in NE Ohio. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. I will be purchasing a new package this year to replace but want to make sure it's not something I did!
It sounds like the did not have ENOUGH food on board. My strong colonies that raise brood all winter will consume 5 pounds of my winter-bee-kind per week. If it falls shorts and they are building up brood, they will probably die.
Hi David, I was wondering if I could get your thoughts regarding Nucs vs swarms. This will be the beginning of my third year beekeeping and I would like to expand my apiary. I plan on purchasing a couple Nucs but I thought I would try swarm traps to help mitigate some cost. I caught two swarms last year, one being probably the strongest looking hive as of this weekends inspection and the other being 1 of 2 of my deadouts so far this winter. I’m just not sure which route is best. Thanks for all the great content you provide, your videos have been such a great help to me! Josh
First bees come this April. I always used Diatomaceous Earth for parasites on my Chickens, I planned to lay a layer of it under my hives, will that help? With the grub killer?
Today I made my first candy boards (your recipe). I let it boil to 257°F, quickly stirred in the pollen sub and honeyBHealthy. When I poured the sugar mixture into the boards (leaving Beespace) the mixture first turned clear and after about 5 minutes it started bubbling and foaming up like there was a fire underneath. It boiled up and I started to worry if it might spill over the edge. I used a spatula to push the mixture down everywhere until it crystallised and set. Why didn't it stay as smooth as it was at the beginning? Have I done something wrong?
My bees are in a covered area the bees are so full of poop they drop their load soon as they clear the hive and it makes a mess I watch them do it every spring.
the big thing is insulated hives. So why unwrap? insulation keeps warm in just like your house. Do u remove your house insulation when it's warmer so the sunlight can warm it? I have mine wrapped with 1" pink insulation board. Hives came thru the winter better than ever and we had some intense weather. I'm thinking of keeping them wrapped all summer. The insulation should help keep the hive cooler. My long hives are insulated with 1" pink board sandwiched between 3/4" pine. I never see them bearding. I would think same principle would apply to my langsford hives
That laugh when you mentioned the snowstorm had me going 😆🥶❄️☃️
MY BEES ARE ALIVE! I'm almost to my year one anniversary and my bees are flying and bringing in pollen.
I think we made it!!!!
congrats, same here. last yr my only hive was dead/ gone in sept. this year 2 hives still going! diffrrence this year i treated formic pro in july.
I mix 1 gal vinegar, 1 cup salt and tell of dish soap. Kills grass and bugs.
I have a lot of grass in my "ranch" and its awful..Can i fix it with that?
Great tips, especially the 42 day prior to flower blooms
Glad it was helpful!
Pretty excited to see the bees taking flights on the warm day's! First winter after getting a swarm last spring.
Great video Dave thanks for addressing my cleansing flight curiousity.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
I am in south Texas and I start planting in march.
I have 2 hives coming soon so I ordered your feeding boards and additives so I'll be ready when my bees come! I'm excited to start beekeeping!
Great plan 👍
Great info. Thanks David and Sheri 😊
Hey Brian, Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
So very helpful! Thank you!!!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tips!
No problem!
I love that you've added Celsius beside the mentioned temperature ❤️
Thanks

Thanks so much for watching and appreciating our efforts.

Great tip about it’s about the temp and videos from people in the south, bless their hearts lol 😂
Hey David. I appreciate the tip on the use of grub X for SHB. I'll give it a try.
Thanks for watching and glad the tips were helpful.
what do you do with left over WBK boards when you transition to 1:1

Do you use the traditional Langston hive or different type
I put 1 to 1 sugar water in a heated water bowl so when the bees come out they can get something to eat and pollen sub in a tube it works great
I use grub-ex and do not have small hive beetles much at all :) here in Texas.

David what kind of insulation do you use on your wbk boards. I've just not been lucky enough to get one yet
I think we have plenty online now! www.honeybeesonline.com but foam board will work as long as there is metal on both sides.
Do you just need to apply the grub ex one time now or do you need to reapply again later?? How far out from the hives do you spread it???
Ive been storing empty honey frames in my basement over winter. Ive noticed that a frame that wasnt used for honey yet had very dried brittle wax . Can the bees still use this wax?
Yes it will be adapted with new fresh wax again.
Very interesting, thanks. One question that bothers me is do bees ever store liquid / fondant in the honey frames, or do they consume it all?
Both
To clean out dead bees from comb I use the compressed air blowgun gently
How. Long do you feed for in spring before you add supers for honey ?
Depends on the weather. A cold and rainy spring requires longer but when I see dandelions blooming and the weather is good, I stop feeding.
All good tips David, thanks.
I appreciate that!

Do both, always put out swarm traps each year to catch your own swarms and any other in the area, but you can't count on catching swarms each year

I forgot to say that my grandfather used to beekeeping, when I was a child
Isn’t that compelling when we learn of a grandfather that kept bees. I bet he would be so happy for you.
Why is it that bees will be head down in a cell if they are starving?
Ha ha yes, we in the Northeast can NOT roll with Southern beekeepers timing!
Tbl spoon of dish soap, stupid autocorrect
