      It's really insane how well I've been able to take really dull sounding guitar tracks and transform them with EQ settings in Reaper. It's even cooler to see how much of a difference minor tweaks make when you have a whole mix and want individual instruments to stand out. EQ is super important, even though most people are focused on the distortion pedal or amp they're using.

The Rat sounds more of a fuzz than I expected it to, and if you're using a tube screamer would definitely benefit from using some sort of EQ or scooping the tone knob on the tube screamer

    I was really interested what is the best pedal for black metal. Very useful video, Simon, thank you)

    • @ithemba
      @ithemba 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with most of the later, bigger bands they did not use any pedals anymore. Not speaking about 2nd generation norwegian BM bands, those generally used HM2 ripoffs like Euronymous famously used a Arion Metal Master, a cheap japanese HM2 clone for 20 bucks, but as with Dissection, thats just decent tube amps really, as with most later bands.
      It falls together with the appearance of the 5150 and later all the dual rectifier and or ENGL savage, invader an so on and so on, those were the first tube heads with enough Gain built in to achieve those tones without pedals, and so from the point those amps were available and the bands could afford them, away went the pedals. Before that they all played Marshalls basically.

    • @regortex3364
      @regortex3364 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      darillio -the Arion Metal Master isn’t an HM-2 clone, maybe it was intended to be (I don’t know) but it sounds nothing like one. I’ve owned one for years and multiple HM-2 pedals. The DOD American Metal (the 4 knob version) is in fact an HM-2 clone and sounds pretty much identical.
      I think Jon in Dissection used a Boss MT-2 into his Marshalls. There’s no rules, use whatever works for you.

    • @ithemba

    I use a regular Boss MT-2 from the '90s with my band, both rehearsals and live. I never feel like I need anything else for that. It can get pretty close to that early Burzum/Darkthrone tone, but with its own twist. Great pedal!

    • @erymanthonseth9295
      @erymanthonseth9295 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@zero-tension3180 Hej. The settings vary from time to time, but usually they go something like this:
      Treble: noon
      Lows: one/two o'clock.
      Mids and MidFreq: one/two o'clock.
      Gain to taste (usually not past two o'clock)
      Level as needed.
      This should be a good starting point, then you can experiment and find your sound. Don't push the treble too far past noon or it will sound like a razorblade through your eardrum. Unless that's what you want of course.
      Edit: I do not really use reverb, no. But I do use delay sometimes.

  • @xanataph
    @xanataph 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So essentially this goes to prove they are all much of a much-ness! Of course each setup has it's own unique sonic characteristic, but with the right knob twiddling they all sound pretty decent for BM. I think that the main thing that makes this genre sound like it does is the types of riffs, chord shapes and the intervals used.
    As for the sound you decide upon, that will change depending on the sound of the drums you are working with, recording tech used, how it's amped (or not!) etc
    I am amazed at that Dragonfly BM pedal vs the Artec Soloist thing. It's really the same pedal with a different paintjob? Not even slightly re-voiced with a couple of cap or resistor changes?

    After seeing you use a Blackstar HT5R, I checked one out. I found a good deal on an HT5, and can dial all sorts of dirty metal tones. The ISF feature is really cool for making multiple guitar parts sound distinct without having to mess with the EQ settings. Still, I think the harshest, angriest tone I've gotten was from an MXR Super Badass that cost a third as much as the Blackstar head alone. No bass, mids at 0-2 to taste, treble at 10, gain just a hair off of 10 to keep out some of the hiss.

    Have been of a low gain, rather extreme EQ philosophy for years now. Just turn up your eq on the amp, all heights, no bass, add mid to your tastes and mixing needs to be heard, or, if thats not extreme enough, add any eq pedal of your liking. Just as in the video, the EQ actually is the way bigger influence and is absolute must to achieve Black Metal territory. The Gain pretty much vanishes behind that anyways.

    For some reason my takeaway from this video was to buy an equalizer and a bd-2 to achieve the tone I want. Clearly this was wrong judging by the growing disappointment with my increasingly expensive equipment. At least my playing got better

    I just have one of those metal zone pedals so far that I got for 30 quid. are the EQ and tube screamer pedals a worthwhile investment then? I was going to get a metal muff, as I heard they can be awesome for recording with the right amp, and also an old blood noise endeavours fuzz pedal.
    The RAT pedal sounded nice though. I take it I'm better off getting the EQ pedal though based on this, or is that not as needed if you have a good head or something? I'm still new to playing guitar, so just learning as I go.
    Scratch that, I think I like the stone grey even better than the RAT.

      The Tube Screamer is every guitarist’s best investment once they figure out how to use it properly.

      @@tds2117 thanks man. I ended up selling my guitar due to collin19 and the world going on hold for a few years.
      Once I have the upgrades done on my PC though, I'll get another and have another bash at it.
      I got my guitar with the simple plan of moving to the Netherlands and starting a hardcore band with some dudes. IO was only gonna need a few chords to start with, and was literally gonna learn the old hardcore punk way.
      Basically learn while on the road, playing gigs. yeah we'd be shit to start with, but would get good as we go.
      maybe a totally retarded way to go about it, but it sounded fun.
      collin19 totally ruined this though, as it kicked in a few months after I got my guitar.

      @@D00M3R-SK8 well man, there’s always time to get back to it. Weird advice from personal experience- don’t stress about how you don’t have the ability to right now or think about it too much, because it can build a negative connotation around it. Then you finally can play again and… you’re not interested.

    argh - the mt could use a low-cut :o
    hmm - would probably go for the "RAT" or the "mad professor" out of these ;)

    Substitute any of those distortion + Ew pedals with a Boss HM-2 and you'd have a similar effect.

    Get an old roland cube amp set the bass down all the way, mids to halfway and treble right up and the overdrive selector on and set to extreme with gain up all the way and run a behringer ultra metal with the lows or whatever it's called set just under halfway and everything else maxed with an optional overdrive pedal next to that but not strictly necessary then go bridge pickup tone up threequarterway. TRVE TINNY KVLTY NOISE!
